Looking for some critiques of the various satellite fed news services
currently available.

I'm doing this as a volunteer effort for a non-commercial station that
currently is using AP and is both disappointed and disgusted with AP's
new short top-of-the-hour format, misplaced bottom-hour, and elimination
of features. One way or another, they're doing to change.

So far the possibilities include:

ABC

CBS

Westwood One (various)

FOX

USA

SRN is a non-starter; it's already used in the market and, in
any case, has too much religious implication.

AP is fed by kU band and the disk has to stay where it is to
get AP wire service...though that may also get deep sixed if
anybody can suggest a viable alternative.

So far, Fox and the longer (non-religious) USA feeds are the
most attractive expecially since they're using C-band and there
is a pre-existing C-band dish.

Anybody care to share experiences with any of the above, either
content or technical...or to suggest alternatives that are
not already mentioned?

Thanks!
______________

When I was managing I used Fox. Their inventory requirements were reasonable...dunno if it's changed. Also they offered neat extra reports, etc. without wanting extra inventory. I can give you contact info if you'd like.
______________

You probably can't go wrong with ABC. Flexibility, the "brand", and especially status reports and long term coverage options for breaking news. I worked with USA at an AM station, first make sure you're getting USA from USA. We got USA from some farm network in North Carolina. Some casts were pre-empted for farm news (6am and 12 noon Eastern) and often they used the channel for sports and remotes. We'd end up with 5 minutes of University of Virginia basketball, and on a couple of Saturday mornings we carried part of a car dealer remote originated by a country station in Ahoskie, NC. As far as USA content-wise, I don't know that they do totally separate newscasts for religious and secular stations, I felt there was a bit of "religious right" in the USA 'casts we carried.
______________

Thanks....but I already have had several contacts with Fox.
Personally I like their newscasts but the listener reaction
to the possible change isn't good. It's in a place where
nobody has heard anything but AP and SRN for a decade or
more but they get a lot of chatter about Fox. They're not
ruled out but there are concerns. There's also the matter
of negotiating a cost since this is a non-commercial and
will be paying for use. This is largely what's behind my
asking around; Fox is the obvious answer but I'd hate to
miss any good alternatives just because I hadn't already
heard of them.

Thank you! First good I've heard about ABC. It's used
by several stations around Sacramento and has a rep
locally for being late with breaking stuff. I think
they may be using C-band but haven't been able to
chase that down yet. I'll especially welcome comments
from ABC users.

Great point! This whole thing is in Alaska and I have
spoken with the folks at the one station I know is using
USA. They're getting a primary USA satellite feed, there
being no regional splits in the area. This would
eliminate the pre-emption potential.

As to secular vs. religious, I'm told by the folks using
it that the 5-minute 'casts are without religious content
but the 3-minute versions are strongly so. Gotta hear
for myself and will welcome more input from users.

USA is okay. I also used them for a while. I like Fox better...The USA 5 minute does not have religion and MANY networks (TRN, BTR) use them to fill out their hour and offer affiliates news without having to change channels on the star guide.
______________
