Pollard and KC Spill Beans About WDBT & WRJM Format Swaps On Myspace

Posted on Thursday afternoon:
http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendID=105879241&blogID=424153579

They mention they will be working at "US 105.3 Wiregrass Country" with Big Mike back in the fold; Miss Elizabeth Parrish is already at the station. The foursome, of course, previously worked at 95.5 WTVY.

I guess the station is changing its name from "Country Legends 105.3" - and apparently, they'll be changing something else soon.

Pollard and/or KC (whoever posted it on the Myspace blog) suggested that the country format on WDBT would move to 93.7, and the talk format on WRJM would go to 105.3.

"Thank you all for your support and hope you will join us at our new home US 105.3 Wiregrass Country and in a couple of weeks, 93.7! 105.3 will soon become talk radio and 93.7 with 100,000 watts of power will become the new Wiregrass Country!"

Wonder if even the indefatigable Rickey Stokes has this scoop yet?

Amie may have forgot to E-mail him the story this time like when the news first broke. Rickey has gotton prety good at copy/pasteing everything that the queen e-mails him.

For the last two days Miss Pollard has said that 105.3 will change to the talk radio station and that 93.7 will be a 100,000 watt country station and if you want more news I suggest going to the Dothan, Alabama paper (The Dothan Eagle) for the article and the details of the mutual agreement made between parties involved with the other issues.

God People, give her a break. It was very smart for her to let the media know everything that was going on. That was a very risky move that bunch just made- and NOW the people know the whole story. Tragic, I mean, Magic was wrong!!!

Now everybody can just go to work, and the real race can begin.

By the way, your feelings towards Amie aside, How do all of you think TVY will do??

I am not from this area so I went to the 105.3 website and it list 5 different radio stations owned by The Radio People several of those being employed by your top country radio personalities. So, headlandradio, to answer the question, it sounds like a great accomplishment to me to have all of your best (country) under one roof so either way you win.

I would also say that the format swap, if true, handing the country format off to the stronger of the two signals, would be a boon to the foursome as well.

Yeah, I agree! In fact, I think that all the stations just need to switch to country, all the Magic stations too, and let them battle it out country vs. country. Also this would ensure that every country listener in the market is satisfied...I just don't think that we are there yet. And this would work out great also because we know that country is basically the only format that will work in south Alabama...h*ll really the only one that will work anywhere on the planet, PEOPLE JUST DON'T LISTEN TO ANYTHING ELSE...GET THAT THROUGH YOUR HEAD....WOOF!!!!! OR ELSE YOU WILL NEVER SURVIVE!!!! It just makes sense, the Radio People were really smart to come up with this, the way they threw that news talk crap on that smaller station and moved country to the bigger stick allowing people in the region to finally get something on their radio's that they would otherwise never be able to get, it's just brilliant! It's just nice that people in south Alabama will finally have a country music station to listen to. I am just in awe at the level of brilliance.

He's right...and I thought the Mobile/Pensacola area had too much over two markets. Dothan is going to have too much in ONE market.

Sunday conversation....

When you strip away the personalities from both 100kW country stations you might as well compare apples to apples. While DJR leans slightly newer and TVY leans slightly older in the end, personalities (especially morning shows) help establish what a listener chooses to listen to throughout the day. Whether you admit it or not both DJR & TVY have stellar morning shows for this market.

Amie & KC have a huge following, as do Mason & Misty. I doubt any radio group would pass at the chance to have some of the biggest names in the market (on a proven format) under the same roof. Let DJR/RJM battle it out for ratings and money; either way TRP walk away a winner. I don't think any of you can dispute that. The Holladay's also don't skimp when it comes to technical aspects of their stations, I would bet my firstborn that a complete re-build of the WRJM stick/transmitter is coming soon. WRJM will be a major player on the engineering side.

I heard through the grapevine News/Talk WRJM had a good book, this is amazing considering they were either off the air, or at low power. Not to mention it's programed by a crazy old coot. With TRP keeping the format on a smaller stick will still be a win-win. While WDBT might not be a 100kW they aren't on low-power nor are they off air. Plus, believe it or not, have incredible market coverage @ 11,500 watts.

Moving right along, if I were Tragic, I'd flip WLDA to classic country, YESTERDAY! When they finally get done with the upgrades WLDA should have a similar signal to WDBT/WESP and will fill the now missing niche. I don't believe they are at full power yet.

Are there a lot of country stations? OMG yes.

1. WDJR
2. WTVY
3. WLDA
4. WDBT
5. WPAP
6. WBAM
6.5. WAKT

Are there a lot of country listeners? Duh.

Many of you complain about the lack formats in this market. It's not that the radio groups haven't tried, they just don't stick.

Some formats that have bombed:

1. Jack-ish - MY 103.9 - which is now a girl leaning classic rocker
2. Ghetto Urban - 1053 The Beat - apparently their listeners didn't have any money to spend on advertisers products
3. Urban leaning CHR - WILD 100 - Nothing against Shaddy, crappy signal
4. ESPN Radio - crappy signal
5. Satellite driven AC - The Breeze - crappy signal
6. Classic rock leaning southern rock - Rock 1025 - your listeners are growing old and the new crop of men don't care about molly hatchet
7. New Rock - 97X, they switched back to just "Rock" and their numbers doubled
8. Every format KMX has been since Duffy sold out to 'the man'. Although, nobody really knows what format KMX that used to be. I think it was AC leaning CHR leaning 80's leaning 70's leaning Triple AAA.

There are other unique issues as well:

1. It's an unusually large market, in terms of square-miles. Not many markets out there (other than major markets) have 5 county metro's. (don't believe me? www.arbitron.com/downloads/Arb_US_Metro_Map_08.pdf)
2. With a large metro, traditionally, your big sticks always dominate because they have the 'reach'
3. Given the farming heritage, and abundance of field parties, most everyone grew up listening to country at some point
4. When boys & girls grow up and have kids of their own, listening to T-Pain rapping about his bitches and ho's - isn't family friendly. Which leaves you with two choices: Country or AC They used to have a third choice: KMX - pre-duffy sell out.

Country and AC work in this market. They also sell. I would have a hard time walking into Bondy's and asking Mitch to buy a schedule if my station was called PARTY 101.1, your home for GHETTO FUNK!!!

If those two formats didn't work or sell...then I guarantee we'd have 7 stations with a format that DID WORK, trying to win over your ears AND your money.

....Then all of you would complain about there being 7 hippity-hop stations or whatever. ;)

I pose one question to continue the Sunday conversation:

Why doesn't anyone want to take on WOOF? I mean SERIOUSLY (yes, that is a dig at 'da breeze') take on WOOF?

Quote From Dothan Radio."4. When boys & girls grow up and have kids of their own, listening to T-Pain rapping about his bitches and ho's - isn't family friendly. Which leaves you with two choices: Country or AC They used to have a third choice: KMX - pre-duffy sell out."

I have to disagree with you on Country being "Family Friendly" listen to some of the lyrics on some songs like "I Love This Bar By Toby Keith" That song is talking about Hookers,Chain Smokers,Boozers Etc. Etc.. The Song by Darryl Worley Tequilla on
lce. I could go on and on with Lyrics to country songs but the bottom line is that it is not a "Family Friendly Format" . I would not want my kids asking me what a hooker is or what Tequilla does to a woman .
We all know that AC is about the most "Family Friendly" as you can get next to Contemporary Christian.

Well People have tried to take on WOOF AM & FM in the last three years and it hasn't worked so here are some reasons why.

1.Consistency- Promotions have been the same for years. Personalities, some have been there over a decade pushing two.

2. Cash Promotions

3. Same Format since the begining.

4. Huge Community Involvement.

5. Coverage

6. Going after the Demo That Works

7. Knowing when to shut up during office hours and in the mornings.

8. They have live people 24 hours a day which is impressive, especailly during bad weather listeners know who they can count on to present facts . And also Not having Billy Joe Earl that lives in his Trailor House saying on the air that he just thought he just saw a tornado.

There are no personalities in Dothan, only liner-card readers. The only exception is Ken Carlisle.

When he gets a brief nano second of time from the "queen"...

But you also have the multipersonalities of John Houston...

Dothan Radio, your comments and overall bias against 'ghetto' formats shows and reinforces ignorance about the communities that black radio serves. I'd guess that you were either a media planner who held these stupid stereotypes, or you worked as for a broadcaster who didn't do much to fight them.
