Pondering The UnKNWN....

Komo probably needs to rebrand as ABC 4. I think this is the future of branding. The sooner they do it the better the ratings. Then watch KING and KIRO follow.

Nah. Localism works. KOMO, KING/KONG, KIRO all stuck. Hell, even Q13 did for 41 years. And to this day, KSTW has its call sign inside of its logo.

Why? Because localism works. There are some ABC 4's out there (KTVX, WCIV, and KXLY) but there's only one KOMO.

February 2nd is the date when KOMO Radio becomes KNWN.
This past Sunday morning (January 30), I heard "Northwest News 1000" at the end of a traffic/weather break. So three days ahead of 2/2 the on-air personnel seem to have ditched "KOMO" branding.

I've been noticing this for a couple weeks now. About the only thing that hasn't changed is the imaging, and I guess that changes tomorrow.

This is the last day to record the "KOMO" station ID for historical purposes.

I wonder if midnight or in the morning drive.. when the change occurs.

Or they just keep calling it KOMO because the fcc doesn’t enforce this much, and haven’t for years. But yes eventually they will rebrand.

Well if it's midnight, we only got an hour to run to Safeway and get party supplies.

I've been listening to 1000 AM since midnight. It appears the new imaging has kicked in.

You stayed up to listen? Really?

I mean, why not? It was Seattle Broadcasting History in the making. Your talking about an era of 95 years of radio history now gone.

No judgement intended. I've been in this business for many years and through many call letter changes. I worked for KJR and KOMO, and am very familiar with both station's history. Even then, can't say that I'd stay up waiting for them to use call letters which we pretty much knew were coming. That, and I value my sleep time. Work-life balance and all.

I went to bed shortly before 1 am, but left my SDR recording the AM band overnight.

So, I guess the ID I heard last night wasn't the last one under KOMO. Side note, I've done more listening via the stream lately because the AM signal has been crap here in Vancouver at night for a good three weeks now.

Yet, its listenable most nights here in the western interior of alaska, about 1500 miles away, @bobdavcav

The midnight ID took place literally one second before Midnight (23:59:59) under the KOMO call letters. The Northwest News Radio branding kicked in right after the national ABC news. The 1 am ID (00:59:45) was the first ID under the new calls.

Just listened to the 3pm-3:10 sequence on the old KOMO. Here is what I heard: Top of the hour ID using new calls, ABC news, then "Northwest News 1000", very punchy with short, quick headlines and maybe an extra sentence. A different news bed, but not overwhleming in any sense. Traffic on the 4's as usual. Overall doesn't sound signifcantly different. The biggest shock is hearing the new calls for this longtime listener. Just sounded foreign to me.
