poor Channel 11 signal?

I was watching some WTTW from our place in Michigan last week and notice much higher video "noise" on WTTW. None of the other stations were affected other than a poorer signal from Channel 50.

Any ideas?

Something is up. I am on the near northwest side of Chicago using rabbit ears and since about June of this year Channel 11 signal has been poor. Usually even with just the rabbit ears it was a clear as 7 or 9<P ID="signature">______________

Just checked and WTTW ch. 11 is coming in noise free in South Bend.

(Using high-V yagi w/preamp. aimed @ Chicago.)

Who knows lately, with all the "new stuff" across the dials. Could have been tropo from WLFI-DT Lafayette. Since FM stations' first harmonic tend to mess with ch's 10-11-12, perhaps the new IBOC signals add a dash more interference.

I never seem to have trouble getting a strong signal on 11, but many times I also get interference on 11 from something, which in my case is usually 99.9 WRZA.

Phil:

There is a new LPFM on 106.7 in Three Oaks (WRHC-LP). While I am a couple of miles away, I have both the radio receiver and the TV fed via the same antenna system with an amplified splitter. The outdoor antenna system has one antenna pointed to Chicago and the other pointed to South Bend. The WRHC stick is directly in the path of the antenna point to South Bend. Could this affect Channel Eleven. The interference is enough to be an annoyance.

By the way, WRHC does a pretty good job for only 100 watts. Their antenna sits on top of the town water tower. I receive a powerful signal in Union Pier.

106.7 * 2 = 213.4, which is smack in the middle of Channel 13 (210-216 MHz). Theoretically, it should have little effect on 11. But, consider trying an FM Trap anyway... It may still help.

I think I have the answer...

Yep. FOX 47 in Madison, WI has their digital signal on channel 11.
The moment they went to full power in June, out where I am in
DeKalb, I saw dark snow, or "digital hash", on my screen. Even
in the winter, I can still see it to some degree. When there is
"skip", or tropospheric ducting from the northwest and the Madison
stations all come in clear...even though my very big and directional
VHF antenna is pointed east...channel 11 analog will get obliterated.

I would suggest getting a digital tuner, anyway. I can get WTTW-DT
out here with an ChannelMaster 4228 up in the attic, and I am low
near a river!

P.S. I can get the Grand Rapids, MI DTV stations on "skip" days,
and I can even null out WGN-DT on rf channel 19 and get WXMI-DT
also on 19 on occasion!

Even closer to his location in Michigan, WGVU-DT in Grand Rapids is also on channel 11.

(WMSN-DT might be the reason for the noisier WTTW signal for the viewer in the near northwest suburbs though)
