Poor Mindy

C'mon,a 1.7!!! That can't be true. There aren't that many station in Utica for a full market FM signal to get only a 1.7. There must be out of market signals that get close to that!

As a matter of fact there are 3 out of market stations with the same rating as Xur...Hot, WSYR-AM and the Bug out of Amsterdam. That's how low they are. 1.7. Can you return transmitters for a refund...?

The word is that WQBK out of Albany badly beat The Drive in a key age demo for 92.7 of men 18-34!

I have no sympathy for any owner that spends money on a signal upgrade in the Utica market. For starters, Utica is a no-growth if not a shrinking market, and certainly aging. It also has more signals now than it can support....96.1, 96.9, 97.9, 93.5, 94.9, 98.7, 102.5, 104.3, 107.3, and 92.7. More OTA listeners are moving to iPods, cell phone downloads and satt radio.

Which in itself is a separate curious point. WQBK at 103.9 was always a signal challenged station in the Albany market starting day one, in 1975. In 1994, 103.5 was added providing vast rural coverage to the West of Albany. Hell...Utica now receives WQBK as well as Saratoga Springs does. But does WQBK sell or market any of this Western coverage area?

Definately the morning show on 92 the drive. I tune in when Jack and Frank are on, done deal. Im not sure how Embedded the morning host is but if I were the managment of the station. Id be listening to him, slapping my forehead, and crying "what the hell did I do" LOL. The guy thinks he's Stern (LMAO) and sounds more like Kathy Lee Gifford.

When WQBK used to carry Stern, I was driving between Rome and Utica every morning for a short time. I'd begin my drive with 95X, and when that signal faded out, I'd switch to WQBK to pick up Stern from Albany. Nobody in Utica ever had him.

WQBK probably doesn't bother much to sell clients in the western part of the market because they'd still have to charge "metro Albany" rates. You can't just air those spots to the west and offer a discounted rate. You can't expect smaller businesses in these rural areas to pay the same rates as businesses in Albany. Even if there were a business willing to buy some time, sales reps don't like driving that far away from home base. They can spend 3 hours driving to/from one distant client or that same 3 hours visiting 2 or 3 nearby clients. Unless that one distant client is willing to outspend the closer clients (not impossible, but very unlikely... Billy Fuccillo might be the only one willing to spend big bucks to encourage people to take a long drive to his location).

I do agree with that statement but as I see it no one in the market is really programing to what is there. I guess what a station should do is forget about the ratings and selling by the book. In a market the size of Utica/Rome/Valley 18 -35 year old women and 25-34 year old men are not in a big supply. There just aren't enough of them in the market and one or two stations programing to those age groups are enough. So I guess programing to the older demos is the answer and to sell the station to clients that just like the station. That's how they do it in small markets, and U/R/V is now a small market.
On the other hand I have done some research on the Utica area economy. In these terrible economic times the area really isn't doing that bad. At least holding its own. Real estate values have actually gone up. As far as the media goes Utica is not Regent's problem. They are doing just fine there. I know WKTV is still a money machine and WUTR & WFXV are holding their own. Compare U/R/V to Detroit or even Vegas. Maybe its not such a bad place to do business (if they could just move out of New York State).
