Pop songs on KLUC

KLUC is playing more pop songs than they have in years. Examples include:

Elliott Yamin-Wait For You
Gym Class Heroes-Clothes Off
Maroon 5-Makes Me Wonder
Avril Lavigne-When You're Gone

I don't believe they play "Hey There Delilah" yet but I wouldnt be surprised if they do eventually add it.

Any thoughts on KLUC moving in a more pop direction? Since they have a Top 40 heritage and have a long history of playing the occasional pop crossover, the songs seem to mix in well. I would imagine the pop songs test well with KLUCs young, suburban (compared to KVEG), female audience.

Does playing pop songs cannibalize sister station KMXB which has long served the market as a default CHR/Pop station? Or are those two stations still so different from each other that KLUC sprinkling in some pop songs does not make a difference.

HOT 97.5 is not joining KLUC in adding pop with the exception of "Rehab" by Amy Winehouse (which I believe is somewhere to be found on the rhythmic chart). The two station's playlists have never been as different as they are now. Should HOT attack KLUC for not being a real hip hop station the way the old WILD 102 did? Or should they just let the music speak for itself?

As long as they cherry pick the top non-rhythmic hits, once they become top hits, they should be fine. Especially if their target is asking for the songs. They will have to be clever in their positioning against the hip-hop station, though.

KLUC and Mix have completely different target audiences (and probably close to completely different audiences). It won't matter if there's some musical overlap.

Perhaps, KLUC saw the massive hole in the market for a Mainstream CHR and they're going to ease in the pop product while not alienating the rhythmic audience. I remember when Q102/Philly segued from CHR/Rhythmic to CHR/Mainstream in the early 90's. It was a slow build until it was primarily a pop station.

Either that, or they're adding just enough pop products to get some new samples?
