Portable Recorders

It looks like my station is about to drop some dough on a new portable device and i'm wondering, what are people using these days for drop collecting/reporting in the field?

The marantz looks pretty good but some of the more expensive models (at sweetwater.com) have built in Mics. which seem nice (no cords wahoo!) but I don't know if those things are any good. Ideas?
 
really like the pdm660.bswusa.com is running a package that includes a ev re 50, sony headphones,etc.neat pkg .check it out.never tried the internal mics, i use a sennheiser 421, record in mono and flip it to stereo in cool ediit pro.really good sounding unit.
 
For the price, and the features, I don't think the M-Audio Microtrack can be beat.

Although the new Zoom H4 looks cool...but I'm not sure of the build quality.

Granted, the M-Audio recorder is around $300 or more "street-price", and it's made of plastic...

But I have one that I use to just record ambient sounds and fun samples to use in my productions...

I've also been letting our promotions department use it to get station actualities at events...and with the USB port built-in, it's great for immediately dragging and dropping audio files into your workstation...be it pro tools or audition or whatever.

I pair it up with an Audio Technica Stereo mic...very nice stuff.

And do check out the Zoom H4 too...it has built in x/y stereo mic, and individual XLR / 1/4" combo connectors on the bottom...the M-Audio just has a mini-plug input for the included stereo mic, or 1/4" stereo mic plugs...

But, that being said...it doesn't effect the sound quality at all for the m-audio.

Anywho...my 20 cents worth.

Cool! This is the first time I saw the Microtrack recorder. It looks pretty great and it ships with audacity (not that I need it but never know right?)

The Zoom recorder looks like it might be a bit harder to handle (smaller buttons and screen?) tho I'd think that it probably gets easier once you've monkeyed with it a bit. Also, I had not considered the four track recorder which might come in handy.

At this point the Marantz is still my dream machine but since the fricken thing costs a fortune and has been criticized for mic hiss problems I'm still open to changing my mind.
 
I use a Zoom H4 both on the street and for set-up recordings. In practice, once you've set the parameters, you only have to worry about one button - record, so it's quite easy to handle without thinking about it or worrying about the other buttons.

Hey, for the price, you can buy two!
