Despite a favorable line-of-sight to the north, there wasn't a peep of WIAA. I had WSIS from Riverside, MI (Benton Harbor area) with a surprisingly weak signal.

I barely had a peep from anything beyond 100 miles. Only Midland, Saginaw and Milwaukee were the real exceptions. Even Chicago, which is a hair over 100 miles from Portage (and has lots of help from Lake Michigan) was only heard on 101.1.

Getting WUWM (89.7) all the way from Milwaukee is a nice catch, coming across Lake Michigan and all. I wonder what kind of power they are using? Am I correct that the mileage you show is air miles?

I've never gotten WIAA in Allendale, about 50 miles north of Portage. WGVU running I-BLOC doesn't help :( But I have picked up WOLW, WJZQ, WWKR, WKZC, WMLQ, WLDR, and WTCM in Allendale. WWKR is almost always in, and WJZQ is in often (no I-BLOC on WYVN or WMPA thankfully).

These are all in air miles.

And WUWM WAS a great catch. I'm threading the needle between 89.5 and 89.9 with this one. Much farther to the south and WOFR Schoolcraft would probably make this a no go. To the north, WKDS would've put the breaks on it.

I-BLOC from other stations pretty much stop getting Chicago or Detroit in Kalamazoo.

Very true. Not very many open looks to Chicago from Kalamazoo (100 miles from Chicago). The only ones left would be 91.5, 93.1 and 101.1. The best one, IMO, used to be 105.1 WOJO, which is now covered up by W286AU. Of course, several others (93.9, 101.9, 103.5, 104.3, 105.9) would be doable if I-BLOC wasn't an issue and you'd gain a couple more (99.5, 100.3) sans translators.

It's getting the same way in my hometown of Coldwater (100 miles from Detroit) Many of the Detroit stations can't be done on car stereo anymore. The only reliable everyday Motor City FM here is 104.3 WOMC. All of the rest are either nearby class A's, I-BLOC'ed or translators. All three of Coldwater's translators are on Detroit frequencies (95.5, 97.1 and 101.1).

WUWM (local to me) has a nice signal in the area, and goes well through Lake County. IL.

I always get a kick over how a number of long-time iconic call letters from S.E. Wisconsin ended up in your area. WZUU was a powerhouse Top 40 (95.7)in Milwaukee in the 70s and early 80s. WRKR (100.7 Racine) was a big Top 40 that kinda morphed toward Album Rock, then back to Top 40. Was alternately called The Rocker or Racine-Kenosha Radio. WJZQ (95.1) was Kenosha's Album Rock powerhouse. In its last years it was called Power 95 and played a Dance/Pop format. It became, of course WIIL, 95 WIIL Rock.

I knew about WZUU 95.7, but I didn't know that 95.1 used to be WJZQ, but I do think that's funny how one-time Milwaukee call signs end up on our side of the lake.

The one I especially like is WRKR 100.7. Not only were they also called 'The Rocker', but they almost had the same frequency! The jingles and airchecks are unintentionally funny for that same reason.

WJZQ when it was in Kenosha, was owned by former WLS DJ Dex Card. Card did pretty well buying that station and I think a few others at the right time.

I wonder if the current WJZQ (100kW on 92.9 from Cadillac) ever makes it into Milwaukee. I don't see any co-channels nearby and the nearest first adjacents are in Chicago.

92.9 from Cadillac has always been a consistent tropo catch here, although it competes with a number of other big signals from similar distances; WNDV South Bend and KATF Dubuque.
