Porter Wagoner's TV history

On the thread dealing with declining cable networks, someone pointed out that Porter Wagoner's old show airs in reruns on RFD. I've caught bits and pieces of Porter. The shows I've seen were in b&w. What's the history of Wagoner's show? (I don't have my Brooks and Marsh book handy at the moment.) Did it ever go color?

Yes it did go color..the show was on for about 20 years (1960-80) RFD-TV appears to be showing a new batch of shows (that is, not shown by RFD before) and some are indeed b&w..I get a kick out of when Porter advertises the "picture book".."send 50 cents to Box 404 Nashville, Tenn.." No zip codes as yet..There is a page on the RFD TV website that tells the story of Willie Nelson acquiring the Whole "Show-Biz" production library with details on every show, some which RFD-TV has never shown as yet..Interesting reading..

RFD-TV seems to have a fair collection of old C/W music shows from the 60's & 70's. I watch the net for their shows on old restored farm tractors. It's an interesting network to watch. They have an eclectic programming wheel.

I think that Porter's show didn't go into color until 1965 because some of the clips on YouTube of the show that are in black and white are from between 1960 and 1965.

Does anyone know when Porter's show moved outside to Opryland from the Grand Ole Opry in which the show was taped, because when they reran episodes of the show on TNN during the 80's, they titled the show "Porter Wagoner At Opryland".

That would have been about 1978 or so, toward the end of his run. He would record a whole season of his show during a period of a few weeks. I had some friends that worked at Opryland during that time and he would tape a couple of shows a dayfor about three weeks in order to get his season shot. The shows were free to park guest.

RFD-TV showed a couple of the 1978 shows recently (One with Marty Robbins)..It is really jarring to see Porter in the early 60's B&W shows before he really got into the Rhinestone Suits and compare it to 1978 when Porter (and most all the males in the show) had longer hair..Porter's Rhinestone suits were Leisure-type suits with the open collars..70's style mod clothes, etc..

and you could only get them in boxes of Breeze detergent!

Forgive my ignorance, but wasn't (then) ingenue Dolly Partin Porter's side-kick for at least some seasons? Or did Dolly just guest-star from time to time? Or, did Porter have another female side-kick? I don't recieve RFD-TV...

Dolly Parton was a regular on the show from 1967 to 1974, before that, country singer Norma Jean ("Let's Go All The Way", "I Wouldn't Buy A Used Car From Him", "Go Cat Go") was a regular on the show from 1960 to 1967.

Dolly was on Porter's show for many years and I believe they cut a couple of albums together. A classic scene is when Porter had to cut a surprised Dolly off in mid song because the show ran out of time!
