Portland / Deering Turkey Game

Growing up in Portland Maine you could always count on going the Portland / Deering Turkey Game. If the weather was really bad or just hung over you could always catch the game on WPOR AM or 1440 AM. Well all grown up and living out of state as most of my friends and family are. You would think that one of the local TV stations would atleast publish the score or a local radio station would still carry the game! It's pretty bad when I have to call 3 different news station to get a score the the local Rag paper couldnt even publish!

Portland, Maine, radio broadcasting local HS sports? That's hilarious. The state football championships were on The Big Jab, but that's been IT for the last several years as far as the high schools are concerned. I've heard that there will be some HS Hoops on that same station but I don't know if that's true. Sad, really.

they probably won't, from what i understand the outfit that did the football games paid for the airtime the last 2 years and this year they got bumped from the night game because 96.3 broadcasts Maine Red Claws basketball.

If they put some effort in to the station, they could own the local sports market, but they just talk sports and not broadcast local sports. The closest thing in Portland is Gleason's group on 92.7/100.7 and I believe his AMs do some local hoops games.

May be right about the paying for airtime. I have also heard that they'll be doing Southern Maine high school basketball broadcasts this winter on one of the stations down there. Not sure if that is fact or rumor or which station it would be on. But I think it would be supported if they did cover local schools down there as it seems to work everywhere else in Maine. I went to Greely High School in Cumberland and I know that the boosters and community would be all over something like that, and I'm sure many other schools and community businesses would be too.

Northern Maine's covering a lot of High School sports.
In today's Bangor Daily News:
Boys Basketball on WZON-am,WBZN-fm and WDEA-am.Girls Basketball on WZON-am,WBZN-fm,WALZ-fm,WSYY-fm,WEGP-am and WHOU-fm.
U Maine basketball Mens on WABI (wrong call letters)-am 910,WRKD-am and WFAU-am.
U Maine Hockey WAEI -fm WIGY-fm,WTQX-fm,WRKD-am,WFAU-am and WLOB-am.
Most of the stations on this list also list their webstream with their call letters.

I noticed WBZN FM was listed as carrying basketball. Thats only on the station internet feed at wbzn-fm.com. Its NOT on the 107.3 signal on air at all.
