Portland Morning Radio

Wanted to throw it out there......who do you think is the best morning show in Portland? And if who, why?

Not WBLM, at least not for the fame and xmitter power they have.
WFNK pretty much falls under the same thing as WBLM.
I can't even really tell you about the others since it's been so long since I have been able to tune them in.

I have to admit, that is a really tough question. Portland is a great market, and great radio stations do fall in that market. I think ALL radio groups in town should restructure their morning shows to a "Major Market" sound. Portsmouth-Dover-Rochester, NH has finally done that (with the exception of WERZ, WMEX <hopefully the format change will do them some good>, and The Shark). I'd love to see Portland do it! Portland is a great city with much potential.

Not saying that Portsmouth-Dover-Rochester and Portland are "Major Markets" but they are the two largest markets in Northern New England and should sound major market quality.
Edited by mainer3223 on 10/13/05 05:05 AM.

For my money, I've got to go with WJBQ. They are probably the most major-market sounding morning show in Portland - great imaging, great guests, (here's my hokey ending...) GREAT FUN! I can't say I've heard every morning show in Portland in my travels there, but of the morning shows I have heard (WFNK, WMGX, Whatever the Wolf is now, WJAB and WCYY) I have to go with JBQ with The Wolf running 2nd.

Continuing throughout the markets, what about Portsmouth? Bangor?

When I listen to morning shows (usually during a 'morning drive' to run an errand), I occasionally listen to Y101. Chuck Igo seems to be having a good time mixing music and a few one liners. It takes a REAL PRO to constantly be enthusiastic over the same "classic oldies" day-in and day-out!

Ironically, there's still a morning show format that HASN'T been tried in the Greater Portland market! I'm sure it would probably go over INCREDIBLY WELL with listeners AND advertisers? But since there are 'a few broadcast theives' who occasionally read these posts (and love to STEAL IDEAS and water 'em down), I'm not going to share the concept here.

Isn't it funny how a slogan sticks with listeners.Y-101,wasn't that waaaaaay back in the nineties.

I don't usually post on this site. Instead I linger in the shadows and watch you all from afar. However, this is a great subject. Portland is a wonderful market with unlimited potential. I agree with those of you who think the market should adopt a more "major market" sound and feel.

For my money I think Q97.9 sounds good, as do the Wolf Wake-Up Crew. BLM is bland and MGX is watered down. Frank on the other hand has gone through several different co-hosts with none staying long enough for them to create any kind of identity. Who knows what they would sound like if they stuck with a team.

How about Magic 93? Ocean 98? Kiss 100? 94Rock?

BTW, the Q morning show blows. Talk about laughing at your own jokes for an eternity. Gimme MGX or POR, or give me an IPOD

Re: Portland Morning Radio, Y-101?

What about 'Your Friends in the Morning' on Positive 89.3 WMSJ? They sound pretty good. Still getting used to one another but they have a good mix there.

Three person morning shows in general are so over it's not even funny. The wackly Zoo days are behind us. Both Por and MGX suffer the same clutter mess every morning that JBQ does. I do agree that Chuck Igo does a great job and it's no wonder that YNZ is the strongest, most sold property that company has. I think it has to concern a few folks with Nassau's non- morning show music approach. I'm sure there was some research behind this and it's definitely obvious that they are going for a hole that they feel exists. They haven't been wrong on much of what they've done.

Do morning shows that have more hosts than listeners qualify?

Sure! Why wouldn't they? I mean they already doubled listenership by adding their wives.

Did someone there do something that made you not like them? Just curious.

Hope your day is great.

actually, Y101 dates even waaaaay-er back... in the 80's! the old WLOB-FM became WYNZ-FM (Z101) after Eastman Radio bought both 970am and 100.9fm.

the Y101 thing came about after the album rock thing went away and YNZ-FM started doing an A/C format, Bob Rose in the morning, iirc.
(was the switch to A/C before, during or after Buckley Broadcasting bought the stations?)
then in '89, YNZ-FM flipped to Oldies (as Y101-FM, Solid Gold Radio)

Irregardless of whether the station is called OLDIES 100.9 or is still referenced at Y-101 FM....Chuck is doing an excellent job on the air. He doesn't overhype the music the way some of his competitors do---which is probably the reason many of us 'stick around to listen to him' a little longer?

I'm not from here and I was curious. I ran into Bob Rose and I didn't know if he was or is in radio here in Portland. Can someone help me with this?

Thanks

Bob Rose retired from radio after his morning gig at WYNZ (Oldies 100.9)in the late 80s. He is currently a bus driver for the Falmouth (Maine) School Department and seems to be having a good time interacting with students of all ages.

Ironically...the 2 of us had dinner together this past Wednesday evening. We shared some very interesting "radio horror stories" about a few previous employers! We both agreed that there are at least one or two "Greater Portland Radio Personalities" who really should make an effort to find a different line of work!

Re: Portland Morning Radio, Y-101?

Thanks for the help. I am going to be on stage with him in December and heard his voice and thought it was really incredible but haven't met up with him since the initial rehearsals.

I appreciate the response.
