Portland observations

That 'mountain' was likely Stacker Butte where KACI 93.5 and KYYT 102.3 are located. There's about a 2mi pipeline on I-82 just below the Manastash Ridge heading south where they come in well.
I'll try to make this story as short as possible: KCIV(Roman numerals for "104")began broadcasting in 1968 with Classical music. I visited there sometime in the late 70s or early 80s. The owner was the only announcer and lived there with his 90+ year-old mother. He was on the air from something like 7AM til after 10, six days a week and went into town on Sundays. All announcements were done live. There were no cart machines. He employed one salesman in town. This went on until he sold the station and it became KMCQ(mid Columbia) in 1982.

Unless they moved, KACI operates from a hill west of The Dalles. As mentioned before, KMCQ was in Washington.

I checked the playlist for the last two days and have to agree. AAA has a Classic Rock core. KINK no longer has one. I also noticed that there are no songs from the 1960s and few from the 70s. This is a change. They've probably lost some older listeners. I hope it works out for them.
I have to back off of my statement that there are no 60s on KINK. I heard "The Boxer" by Simon & Garfunkle which hit the Top 40 in April of 69. It was actually playing when I turned on the radio!

So, I've been down here about a month, and here are a few observations:
1. Lots of new imaging voices throughout the market, KGON, KWJJ, KXL, KRSK, and KFBW, as well as an addition to KXJM.
2. Could you even call KINK AAA anymore? I can hear some elements of the format there, but to me it sounds like Modern AC with a couple 80s tracks an hour thrown in and maybe an acoustic performance thrown in here and there. Don't even get me started on their imaging.
I credit KINK as being one of first radio stations that got me into the dxing hobby. I remember tuning in around 2005 on my parents car radio, and I was blown away by how cool the music was. We lived far outside of the KINK coverage area, but it still came it pretty clear most days. My parents never understood my dxing hobby, but they certainly liked the music selection well enough to leave KINK on the radio (they were listeners of "The Mountain.") As others have mentioned, the station began to change with new ownership. I stopped listening around 2014 when LPFMs moved into the area and it was no longer worth the trouble to access their online stream. I still liked some of the songs that they played, but it definitely sounded like a blend between an alternative and a Hot AC station.

KXXP is coming from Mt Defiance in The Gorge. The antenna elements sit at about 5000' - much closer to Cascade Locks and White Salmon (of course). They're short-spaced, especially to KMCQ so the ERP was dropped a few hundred watts to 4.9kw to compensate (in lieu of a "nulled" antenna).

I can't find the table that shows minimum distance between different classes of license but that many miles seems excessive for Class C1 to C2, even co-channel! 5.5 to 4.9KW isn't much difference and you would never be able to tell.
