Portland Ratings

If you ask me, and certainly no one did, WMGX is hurting because they've essentially launched Coast Lite at WCLZ. The cross over is pretty incredible. I'm not saying either station is poorly programmed--I'm just saying they're essentially doing the same thing. Before you're quick on the draw, just down a couple hours of the two stations playlists and compare (as I've done).

And frankly, CLZ's laid-back feel is probably more appealing to the 40-something cubicle dwellers at the TD Banknorth building.

WZAN 970 has a fantastic coastal day signal to the south. Even better than 560 WGAN. I would pick them up regularly in Beverly/Salem/Marblehead and Lynn Beach areas. They have virtually no night signal to the south. I lived in Scarborough a quarter mile from the Saco line and could barely get them on night pattern 8 miles from the TX site. WGAN had a better night signal in my area at the distance of 12 miles to their TX site in Portland. Overall both stations lack marketable night signals to the south. If WGAN or WZAN want to penetrate York County better particularly at night, I'd consider making an offer to buy 92.1 WPHX in Sanford. Not the hottest signal in northern York County but at least you can hear it. They could shut off the stereo pilot to stretch a few extra miles out of it. I'm sure residents in York County would appreciate programming from a Portland radio station that offers a southern Maine news updates with weather hourly vs. a Boston station that could give a hoot about listeners there while trying to cater to listeners in areas that the signal does not even reach; even if Saga ran bird-fed programming part of the time.

There is always 95.3 WSKX if Clear Channel has finally decided that Maine listeners won't have Boston radio shoved down it's throat. The back-up transmitter in Ogunquit covered coastal York County quite nicely before they installed that one-bay antenna on Agamenticus Hill in York currently used to cover the Portsmouth-Dover-Rochester market. Way too thin a signal for that task. I'm sure WHRB in Cambridge, Mass would be thrilled to see it go.

WZAN's transmitter is just off the 295 spur in Scarborough, where it's been since 1940.Check out Fybush's tour of the facility, http://www.fybush.com/sites/2005/site-050624.html. It would be nice if they could simulcast these stations, ZAN is strongest south and east of the city and GAN is strongest north and west of the city

WPHX 92.1 can barely even make it to Saco and Old Orchard Beach. It gets beat on by WYFP 91.9 from Harpswell. Did WYFP get some sort of a power increase over the last few years cause I moved away and am now back up here and used to actually be able to get WPHX way better 3 years back then now. WPHX seems so weak and yet I am just 18 miles from the transmitter.

Why do these threads always find themselves 50 miles from the subject? It doesn't matter whether or not the subject is ratings...which is what I believe this post was about originally...or station changes, someone always gives a sideways position on a tower or frequency or something like a station being heard in Cape Cod...who cares!!!!?!?!?!?!?!??! Get back to the subject for crying out loud. Some of us actually care about how the stations we listen too "here" where "we" live and work did in the ratings and not how some signal that didn't even appear in the book sounds on a boston whaler in Martha's Vineyard. How did "our" favorite stations do and what do people in the "know" think about the current numbers and what the stations will do in the future. Please people...stay on track...

BAD DAY?!?!?!?!?!
This is a discussion board.....we were having a discussion.......I thought that's what it was for.
Nobody forced you to participate

Having a bad day has nothing to do with it Thorn...but like the bowl from standing on the big boys chair you once again have missed. Some people...myself included...respect this site as a place we can get intelligent insight on the inside workings of what we consider a valuable media outlet that not everyone knows everything about, you seem to fall into this category so I would expect you would understand that. The point I was making is that on the once in a while occasion that I visit this site, it is to find out how things are going in radio...and especially in today's economic situation...some of us want to know whether our favorite station is going to be around much longer. Often times we get a chance to see the foretelling of changes coming in our little burgh with regards to our favorite stations. What is completely frustrating is when you find a thread dealing with just this subject and instead of reading something that may actually explain how things are working for one or more stations or even what people in the business might deduce as changes "to come" we get a fractured viewpoint that fails to stay on subject and the thread becomes like so many others on this site that meander through everything from frequency modulation and reception in Cape Cod to how a certain station in Brattleboro overcame a similiar issue to continue broadcasting. I have no problem at all with good conversation...but I don't tune in to Meet The Press with the guests being 5 heads of a finance committee only to hear them talk about basketball...get the point? The thread is titled Portland Ratings. That is what I expected to read, some good healthy and maybe even competitive debate about...not what the thread devolved into which is all subject matter for another thread completely. Now, I am not saying the opinions expressed within this thread are not important, pertinent or educated...I am simply saying that I would love to hear what these people think of the most recent numbers and how they will effect the local market going forward. If I want to know how old a signal is or talk about touring transmitter sites...I'll call you. ;D

LLLLLIGHTEN UUUUPPPPPP FRANCIS,
Nobody stopped the conversation from including the information you were looking for!
I respect this sight just as much as everyone else. I know more about this medium than you would think, I've been in the business. I think it it you that has the respect problem, after all it was you who came after me making it personal. (Some people...myself included...respect this site as a place we can get intelligent insight on the inside workings of what we consider a valuable media outlet that not everyone knows everything about, you seem to fall into this category so I would expect you would understand that.)

If you took this as an attack...you were mistaken. The category I "was" placing you in was one that came here for educated info and conversation. Next time I post on this site...or respond to an existing post...I will puncuate more clearly. Is that cool with you Alice? ;)

:) Yeah I'm cool with that.
I'm sorry if we went in another direction, I just think you could have approached it a little differently. But I understand your frustration. I just think there was enough room in the thread for several conversations. But your right next time we should start another thread. Hey....wait a minute...if you think about it yo and I have been on another subject on this thread for several days now. Hehehe...your right Maximum, I'll try to be more mindful of such things in the future.
