The New York Radio Message Board (
www.musicradio77.com/wwwboard) is just that: a message board for and about NY radio. It grew out of his main labor of love - a tribute board for 77WABC/New York and its days as a Top40 music station. While many of the early comments were about the admittedly well done site and digging the memories of MusicRadio 77WABC. Years ago, it was populated by quite a few people actually IN radio and a smaller group of radio weenies and wannabes who dig radio talking about (what else?) Radio.
Due to censorship, passwords and an heavy editorial hand at times, the board has slowly evolved into mostly an ego trip for Doctor Sniffen. His "Board Reflections" is a (usually) 30 minute monologue regarding the big topics of the day on "The Mecca Of All Radio Message Boards". It is an excuse to crack a mic for him each week and even features a custom PAMS jingle.
The recent addition of a board for unhappy oldies listeners of WCBS-FM has turned ugly with lists of sponsors advertising on 101.1, threats of boycotts, stock sales and protests along with nasty comments about people involved with the station. Herr Doktor has been busy giving free lights to torches and sharpening the pickforks for the crowd for several weeks now and getting national attention for himself and the message board.
As of the past week, a number of the comments have been turning positive about JACK and even though the regulars are doing their level best to belittle any poster who doesn't march to the preset beat, they are being posted. Even some listeners who started out unsure or disliking the change from oldies to JACK are beginning to find positive things to say about the format.
While his call for no posts of "I like the music" or "wow, they just played..." would normally be in line with his usual (unwritten) policy, the fact that he is permitting the negative camp to continue to post childish outbursts about ANYTHING is uneven at best.
I am friends with a number of the former 'CBS-FM jocks and disliked the way they were dismissed -- it happened to my staff & me at a station I programmed years ago. The postings on the board echoed that for days but now has turned to calls for other stations to pick up the oldies banner -- meaning that the station should change format and fire the staff working at (pick a station even if it doesn't get into the NY metro).
As popular as the oldies format seems to be - (if you read and believe his board - everyone in a 400 mile radius turned to WCBS-FM on a daily basis and listened all day long) - you have to wonder why no other NYC station has stepped up to flip to an oldies format on their air. Older demos maybe?
