Poss. MyNetworkTV lawsuit? (NH station)

http://business.bostonherald.com/businessNews/view.bg?articleid=127585

"But News Corp.’s My Network TV, described as a “mini network,” may already have a miniproblem on its hands. Boston already has My TV. At least that’s the position of Diane Sutter, chief executive of WZMY-TV, a Derry, N.H.-based independent station that in September started using the “My TV” moniker.

I wouldn't be surprised if that were to happen. Chances are that one of them will probably have to change its slogan before September. I hope they have good lawyers too because they're going to need them.

Either that or News Corp. will just wait WZMY out, hoping they run out of money and have to sell anyway. I didn't say it was a smart plan - it's just the type of idea that floats around in strange circumstances.

It could be like the NBC logo that looked like the Nebraska Educational channel's logo. NBC paid a good sum of money to Nebraska's company to keep their new logo.

Possible Solution, But Would Fox Go For It??

There is something Fox could do, but they'd have to license someone else's branding as the new name of their soon-to-launch program service.

Canada's CHUM Limited is actively franchising their "City TV" concept (which CHUM is using on five of it's TV stations in Canada) to broadcasters in other countries.

Perhaps Fox might want to avoid a lawsuit and drop the "My Network TV" branding and instead, make a deal with CHUM and get the U.S. rights to the "City TV" branding for the new program service.

However, "City TV" is a full-station branding campaign, and stations signing-up for the new Fox programming service would have to brand themselves "City TV (Name of City)", and adopt the City "attitude", even during hours when the program service isn't on the air.

Personally, I think Fox getting rights to the "City TV" branding from CHUM might work out better for their new venture. Member stations of this new service would probably find "City TV" a much better "brand" than "My Network TV". And "City TV" is easier to remember and (at least to me) has more of an impact and a "buzz" than "My Network TV".

"City TV New York, Channel 9....Everywhere!"

Well, not to belabor all these good points but...The name itself is horrible. It was obviously thought up in a boardroom. The "My _(blank)_" thing is soo last year. It has been used to death on the internet. The notion behind "my..." is that you can customize a website for your own purposes. I can do this on my homepage with earthlink mking it "my homepage". How this even applies to this network is beyond me. How can I customize the programming for me? A true My Network TV station would be a bunch of choices like on-demand that consumers could choose from. That would personalize the network and make it into a "My" product, but that isn't even being contemplated for this network. It is a nutty name thought up by suits at Fox who have been reading too many focus-group reports without actually understanding the "My..." concept. Alas....

Since I live just down the street from Derry and have watched My TV, I can tell you that it is nothing more than an independent station playing repeats of Network shows. Just like independent stations have been doing for ages. There is one in-house production I have seen, My TV prime; it is a substandard NH oriented talk show with a host who doesn't have much in the way of talent. The production values are horrible, the public access channel has better picture quality. They would be better off affiliating with the new Fox Netlet and calling it a day. This "My..." phenomenon is all over- time to let it go....

Re: Possible Solution, But Would Fox Go For It??

Don't forget that parent company News Corp also owns a stake in MySpace.

And that, plus Fox having bought MySpace (which existed before NH's MyTV), are probably the center of the argument they'd use against the infringement claim.

A guess on why this is called "My Network TV"

News corp. paid a lot of money to buy myspace.com and some web development businesses. I have no doubt the "my network" name came about because of this. Fox is probably looking to tie the website and the network together.

I would also suggest that the station in New Hampshire that serves the Boston area might just be bought by Fox to create a duopoly there with WFXT.

A lot of money for last year's good idea (actually the idea is about 4 years old by now). Can anyone say TV Guide? How about TV Guide Channel? Throwing good money after bad should be FOX's motto.

News corp has partial ownership of TV Guide and no ownership of the TV Guide Channel.

Myspace is still a very popular website and was worth the money News corp paid for it. News corp has done very little with the internet, but it appears that is about to change.
