Possible cause why the tower collapsed

Weather and I don't mean high winds. The region is undergoing an extreme drought . The ground is dry and crumbling, and the area around the immediate area of the tower could have been dried out enough, and combined with the tower weight, can be considered a cause for the collapse. Farfetched? Not really. There have been structures and some towers falling due to soil being very dry.

You know, I had a family member of mine spit out that exact theory....but then again we've had about three days of rain this week in ETX.....

But I do know where you're coming from....

I'm reading an update on KLTV's website and rumors are starting to fly about an aircraft being involved.

If a plane clipped it,the tower, guide wire etc would cause considerable damage to the aircraft forcing it to either crash or land near by. I dismiss the aircraft theory,it would have been noted by now if indeed one clipped the tower. Even though it rained recently, the area is still 22 inches below ,even with the start of a new year. the ground is waaay too dry and unstable. Expect some other structures that are "weighty" to show signs of deteroration, if not total collapse.

The Longview News Journal is stating that KLTV's Gillian Sheridan as saying that it's speculated that the new HD equipment caused the crash.

This is the second Liberty (now Raycom station) to have its tower collapse in recent months. KPLC in Lake Charles lost a new, 1,600-foot tower and its existing analog tower in March 2004. Coincidence?

You can also add a CBS affiliate in Shreveport that suffered a tower collaspe in 1977. KSLA had that share of the Ark-La-Tex who had that situation where those that get them over the air cannot watch a CBS program except for maybe cable. And that was long before there was such a thing as HD.<P ID="signature">______________

KTUL-TV, the ABC affiliate in Tulsa had their tower collapse back in the late 80s-early 90s. The reason was pretty obvious. They were in the middle of an ice storm. At the time, it was the tallest tower in Oklahoma.

I remember reading somewhere on the net that it was KLTV that loaned KPLC a backup transmitter when their tower fell then....

Nope. KPLC's tower fell because of poor planning by the tower crew...they were in the process of BUILDING the new tower for digital and analog. The crew did not secure part of the hoist or ginpole....and it fell in high winds...the new tower snapped the guys of the existing tower...and down both came...

Different situation.
