POSSIBLE EXPANSION FOR WGN RADIO ??

OldChicago said:
There is going to be split at Tribune Co. between its publishing and broadcast operations. I wonder if WGN Radio will now be able to purchase an FM station in the Chicago area?

They'll have to get the 1968 court order that caused Tribune to donate WFMT to Channel 11 vacated. Now that the paper is being spun off, it should be doable.

I would jump at the chance to get 101.1 if I was Tribune broadcasting, that all depends on if it is even for sale which has not been proven. That speculation is widespread at other radio message boards such as Chicago Media chat.

How about WGN sold the station to Clear Channel, I think Clear Channel wants a 50,000 watts news/talk outlet. Since Clear Channel is still under the cap for AM Stations.

Oh, I certainly hope not. There would no reason to listen to AM radio ever again in Chicago if WGN gets sold.

Similar to what Belo did in Dallas a while ago.

My sense is that Tribune wants to grow its broadcasting properties, perhaps build unified multi-platform media destinations, the way CBS is doing with its "cbslocal" sites that link to it's radio & TV stations. That could mean more radio. It's not very efficient to run single-station clusters, especially in big cities. And AM isn't a growth area.

Then again, they could be very happy with no radio at all. Hasn't hurt NBC Universal or Fox. They've wanted to get into the TV network business. So it could go either way.

Truer words were never spoken! We sure don't need another Cheap Channel automated radio station with the same old garbage programming. Geez! Just dial around and you can find plenty of those sadly

WGN is the only station worth listening to as far as DXing any more (I live in Louisville, KY and really enjoy their Saturday evening and overnight programming).

The real issue here is what the station thinks it's worth and what a buyer would pay. This is a station that, except for sports, is now down around 20th in 25-54 listening and slipping in billings (approaching a 50% slide from its highest point).
