Possible Format Flip Coming To 1230 WHUC

Possible Format Flip Coming To 1230 WHUC

Scott Fybush reports in North East Radio Watch that Clear Channel, may be planning to flip 1230 WHUC, Hudson, to a simulcast of WKIP 1450 Poughkeepsie, having applied for WAIP calls for the station. This would add to WKIP reach to recently re-flipped WJIP 1370 Ellenville . WHUC has been the call sign for Hudson’s 1230 for as long as I can remember, and standards, has been the format for years. I guess it is a sign of the times that another standards station disappears. At least fans up there have WROW 590 to turn to, although Brian Dodge would like to think it is his in the same building 560 WCKL that nudged them over the edge. On the other hand, did WCKL switch to a more oldies leaning format? Are they still on the air?? I have not been up that way since October.

Re: Possible Format Flip Coming To 1230 WHUC

When did the news happened? WHUC has been on 1230 AM since the early to mid 70's when it was a Top 40 station. There were some changes over the years including a talk station in the 90's, and then by 2001, it went standards where they carried the "Music Of Your Life" network until 2005. I remember MOYL when it was heard on all 4 stations including WHUC, WKIP, WGHQ and WELV during the early 2000's until 2005 when many of the MOYL affiliates dropped and went to a former WW1 standards which is now run by Dial Global where Chick Watkins, Jim Baine and Jeff Rollins was on. I remember Chick Watkins when I used to listened to WCKL back around 2001 until 2005 when it went dark, and I also remember when it was on WMTR back many years ago when I was visiting in Brooklyn when it was a standards station where it carries into Brooklyn as well as Queens, Bronx and the rest of the city. I also went to Lake George when it was also on WENU. Those are the three stations carried the WW1 standards service for years. When I was checked the station, they're still running standards on WHUC, but I don't see any changes on 1230, but we shall see. I going to miss standards so much. It's been a long run for the station. If you want your music fix, you should listen to "Fox Oldies", this would be a lot better to benefit from the loss of WHUC.

Standards are dying a slow death. Remember back in 1992 when WNEW-AM went to Bloomberg at 1130? I remember WQEW was on 1560 when it was a standards station for a few years until 1998 when Radio Disney came in. I'm going to miss them all. :(

Re: Possible Format Flip Coming To 1230 WHUC

Actually, WHUC has been on 1230 AM since 1946. They added an FM around 1969 or 70.

You're talking about the 920/1370/1450? afilliation from early 2000's? Because BEFORE they switched to talk, they were ABC's [??? damn.. forgotten the name] standards format... the one they just killed for good 2 years ago. WHUC had NO afilliation with that. You're right that they were MOYL, then switched to Dial Global...which is where they still are today. Chick, Jeff, [et al], are also heard on Cobleskill's 1190 WSDE. And, [part-time] in the core Capital Region on 1160 WABY.

What format is 1450 these days?

Re: Possible Format Flip Coming To 1230 WHUC

According to the FCC database 1230 Hudson started using the new calls WAIP on 03/09/2012. Since they don't reach my home in Hyde Park I don't know if they actually have been using the new calls, or if the format has already changed.I do remember WHUC being a top 40 station back in the sixties.
WKIP is a news-talk station, which is really talk, not so much news. They carry Don Imus, Glen Beck, Rush Limbaugh, etc. with Fox News TOH.

CC is building a news-talk network to compete against Pamal in the Mid-Hudson Valley? Should've seen this coming :)

Compete? Don't you have to be competitive to compete? Looks more like a streamlining move by Clear Channel. WKIP is all automated syndicated shows. There's nothing local about it. There's no signal overlap between 1450, 1370 and 1230, so it's not like when one fades out you can just flip to another. Flipping the WHUC format just makes one less thing for management to think about. It won't be a network of local stations. It will just be the same cookie-cutter national programming offered on three signals owned by the same company.

Pamal gets some credit for at least having a live and local morning show on 1260/1420/920, but the truth is people in Peekskill don't much care about Kingston, and vice-versa. All of these AM stations had their heyday when they were super-serving their cities of license. That's the last time they were competitive. People put up with the signal issues because of the great product they were delivered. That product is long gone, and so are the ratings.

Stardust!

Re: Possible Format Flip Coming To 1230 WHUC

And pre-Stardust, Chick and company were WW1's "AM Only" format. A great format that just aged out. It was on everywhere in the late 80's to early 90's.

Too bad about WHUC, but then it is too bad about all of these stations. The AM's just don't stand a chance anymore. I wonder at what point CC and Cumulus just finally just turn the licenses in. They clearly won't/can't spend any money to do anything real with them. Nor should they. No one other than us radio geeks could name more than 2 programs on any of these AM's from the Tap to the Rip.

Same concept yes, but Stardust was the OLD name. It changed over the years.

Re: Possible Format Flip Coming To 1230 WHUC

To clarify. STARDUST was ABC's format. AM ONLY was what is now called AMERICA'S BEST MUSIC. Just checked on 1230. Theyre still WHUC, but have dumped ABM. Format is more
of a light AC with NO jocks...no bottom news, and alot less ads.

Re: Possible Format Flip Coming To 1230 WHUC

To my surprise...........
today, they were BACK to Dial Global's service! Numbered days perhaps ???

Re: Possible Format Flip Coming To 1230 WHUC

Can someone aircheck the last 1/2 hour into the new format ?

No thanks a lot. I checked the station this morning and they're still running standardes as WHUC. But I don't see the station flipping the format anytime soon, but now you're with standards for another month or another year. :D

Re: Possible Format Flip Coming To 1230 WHUC

However long it is, it's a relief to keep the standards. WGY already carries basically the same shows as WKIP, designed to tickle right wing ears.

This is odd since a search of the FCC database turns up 0 records found for WHUC, but returns WAIP for 1230, Hudson. The same thing occurs on the radio- locator site. Down here in Hyde Park 1230, whatever they call themselves is overridden by first adjacent 1220 WGNY.

Why do want them airchecked? It's a "national" standards service! If you can hear ANY of their other afilliates, then you know exactly what they're playing! ;)

MHVRadiofan ..did WCKL switch to a more oldies leaning format? Are they still on the air?? I have not been up that way since October. WCKL is on the air. Barely. Sounds like Brian's broadcasting from a van down by the river. The transmitter he's on is dying; the signal is noticeably weaker right in front of the pattern. Modulation is significantly down and noticeably distorted. The music remains a strange mix of pre-64 Pop/R&B and MOYL. It's a random playlist with plenty of audio train wrecks if you're after some laughs (eg. - Smokey Robinson into Vaughan Monroe said:
programming will keep them afloat.

This winter CKL were frequently on full power at night, especially for [distorted] local basketball games [via cell phone]. This has to end, hopefully soon.....
