Possible new format on WRZK?

  • Thread starter TightwadSquarepants

What is this, you say? Charlotte has a basketball team?!?!? Like UNC-Charlotte? Did Michael Jordan come out of retirement again?

Yes Bill and his partner in Crime(Bob) are two princes and long time friends of mine. You'll find both of them to be good people In fact Bob "watched over me" the night of my bachelor to the MRS almost 25 years ago

LOOKS LIKE WE WERE ALL WRONG....SAME FORMAT JUST A NAME CHANGE....959 THE HOG...

WOW... I don't hear many currents. sounds really recurrent heavy. Sounds like a straight Rock format. No punk or younger skewing bands. But Its just AM drive. Sounds like they are giving up the new alt rock position altogether. Be interesting to see how it unfolds in the next week. And in the middle of a book, too. Quite the gamble from HV. Interesting.

After spending some time listening.......It's, well.....Rock lite. Not enough classic rock to make any kind of impact on Qut. Hardly any New rock. Most of the newer things I heard, I would call recurrents. Heard a new Chili Peppers , TOOL, Shinedown and Papa Roach, all I'd expect. I heard some '80's hair band stuff, but not to good stuff (outside of a megadeth tune). I heard Nazareth, Zepplin etc. But what I did'nt hear was edges. Nothing that would excite me about the station. Nothing I could say I loved, and nothing I hated......and to me, those are the things that ignite emotions, good or bad, about a rock station and give it definition. The imaging is, well, average. For a station called the hog, it really has no attitude. It's just kind of there. Its very predictable. I predict a contest where they give away a Harley and do a few remotes from a BBQ joint. This is just the first day, but being a die hard rock fan, I'm not too impressed........so far.

I'll agree with you on "The Hog" Bored-Op.
Nothing that really impresses me either.
I listened and heard some older AIC, Soundgarden, Aerosmith and Kid Rock.
At least they have taken away some of the "punk" music that will NEVER be remembered by anyone.
I think it's NOW what they intended the "Old K-Rock ...Rock Without Rules" to be.
Sounds like some canned stations I've heard in other markets.
Rather blah.
Just an opinion.....Don't be surprised if Z-Rock beats them significantly in the next book.
:-\ :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\

Well let's see, I think I'll be unusually kind here. I think the image and the music was a good idea. I agree with boredop that's there's no "edge" but unfortunately, it's only radio people and select true music fans who care about that stuff. You have to play to the audience. I don't like it anymore than anyone else. With all that good stuff being said, they flipped over horribly, in my humble opinion... on a tuesday, in the middle of a book, no live jocks and only one sweeper they played over and over all day. They even had "K-Rock" promos still playing. I mean how long would it take to go into the production room and update everything before you change over? Good news, let's hope their new tv commercials don't have that annoying screaming little midget!

I know some people who work for the major manufactoring company in the Tri.

They asked "why did the live DJ's disappear?

Is it ran totally by computer now?

How can we request songs?

No contests?

The average listener DOES KNOW when a station is automated.

I agree with gasket. The average listener is not stupid. You have some of these station owners that say "We'll totally automate our station and bring in some satellite jocks. Nobody will be able to tell the difference." Like hell, they won't. The only satellite shows in this market are Bob and Sheri on Q98, John Boy and Billy on Rock 103 and Crook and Chase at night on WKML, and to me that's three too many. Most people know they aren't local, but you can't fool 'em with some of this other s**t. Local announcers may not be the "stars" that some of these other people are, but they know the market and they know the people. If you want a jukebox, get Sirius or XM, but if you want someone you can relate to, people usually know where to go. And that's alot of what being a jock is anyway...relating to people. You can play their requests, you can tell them where to go for a good hamburger, radial tire or labotomy, but you're there to relate to them, too. There's still nothing better than a live, local jock.

I hope the jocks come back to "The Hog". Especially since it's pretty much exactly the same as the old format. Minor changes only. They could probably use a face lift themselves though, if they truly want a complete image change. The jocks need to be "rock" jocks. But for their own sake, I do hope they come back. But, I get so tired of hearing everybody gripe about "non-local" radio. I think you guys are right about "out of market" jocks doing shows and automation. Satellite shows suck. I don't think most listeners really even appreciate them. But voice tracking, for example (as in Clear Channel), does give some jocks major career opportunities. At one point I worked for Clear Channel. I was one of only 6 live jocks in a building that housed a three station cluster. Live mornings, live mid-day, then "out of market" jocks the rest of the day and on weekends, jockless at night. If you're in...You're in. If you're out...You're out. They cut what they consider to be "non-essential" jobs around the building. If you work for Clear Channel, you have the opportunity to spend about ten minutes per day voice tracking for another Clear Channel station (could be down the hall or in a different time zone), for an additional $500 bucks per month. There are some jocks that are doing their own job, then voice tracking for up to three stations full time. Do the math. Good bucks. So, yeah. Voice tracking is like electricity. It can cook your food. Or burn your house down. You've got to get in on it and make yourself "essential" to the success of the station. And when you do...Then you're not complaining about the non-local flavor of corporate radio. But, for example, we had an afternoon jock that would sometimes get the stations he was voice tracking for mixed up and say the wrong call letters. And if you're a PD or Production dir. and you're pressed for time, you can pre-record your breaks for your music intensive show in ten minutes and spend your day getting the dirty work done. And from a business perspective, you've got to admit that spending $6,000 a year on a jock as opposed to paying a full salary is pretty smart. Especially when a PD can e-mail the voice tracker local liners, weather, and info as needed to sound truly local. AND it gives full time jocks weekends off. If you're all bout getting exposure. There you go. You can be on in three or four markets. AND the listeners, in my experience couldn't tell the difference. Our voice trackers got e-mails and voice mails from listeners all the time. For request shows, you can just have the listener leave a voice mail, then just use their request on the air. From what I understand, K-Rock had been utilizing voice tracking at night for quite some time anyway. I couldn't tell. For music intensive shows, I think it's a good move in some cases. However, Personality driven shows...Not so much. It's no better than a syndicated morning show. Which I'm not a fan of. BUT, to their credit, when was the last time that a local morning show in this market had three pro athletes (drivers), a Rock Star, and three famous comedians on in one week? It's hard to compete with the connections and the rolodex of a syndicated morning show. I just think that most jocks and board ops think about the positive aspects of all this. They just gripe about the possibility of losing their job to a computer or a disembodied voice. My advice...Make yourself essential. Back to the original topic..."The Hog"...The jury's still out. The Imaging sucks though.

HOLY CHEESE AND CRACKERS *&#@!! Don't any of you hold back or anything, dang it, tell us what you really think! I hope you guys remember what it's like to flip a station. I know all of you have worked at one while that process is going on. Sigh, nevermind.

OK Winnie. You asked for it.

IT SUCKS!!! It's TOO AUTOMATED!!!

NO PERSONALITY WHATSOEVER!!!

My opinion - THE HOG is actually a derogatory name to the station!!!

I talk to over 3,000 local people per week (in person) and they want a station where they can call and talk to someone for requests, info, etc, etc.

Some people are actually making fun of the Hog sweeper "another rack of rock" and saying "Couldn't they come up with anything better? That's stupid".

Believe me, I really know AND HEAR what the local people want in radio and this is NOT IT.

Amen Crossman!!!

You're right on the money!!!!

The jocks will be back. They have been doing remotes. Same folks. Just a name change. Not enough Classic Rock to impact QUT, Too much to piss off the younger end. And the imaging sounds rushed. Name change and token '80's hair.

JOCKS WILL BE BACK ON MONDAY[EDIT].....PEOPLE IN THE SAME BUSINESS SHOULD STICK TOGETHER NOT MAKE THEMSELVES FEEL IMPORTANT BY PUTTING EVERYONE AND EVERYTHING ELSE DOWN....WRZK IS NOW A BETTER STATION..
[EDIT--personal attack.]

JockJock,

The only thing I am "putting down" is the fact the station is automated this week and it sounds crappy. (yes, I gave 1 personal opinion and stated it as such)

The remainder of my comments were taken from real people--- "the working class". People I talk to everyday. And I talk to several hundred per day in all walks of life and all income brackets.

Isn't that who stations are aiming for or am I missing something here?

I'm all for "live DJ's" adding personality and "the connection" people are really looking for.

Automation never fools anyone.

The working class, everyday person, CAN tell the difference between live DJs and automation.

Don't think for a moment the everyday person doesn't pay very close attention!!!!

I personally know of one guy who tells me accurately if a DJ voice tracks. This guy doesn't call it voice tracking, he says, "Joe (false name) recorded his show this morning, didn't he?"

It is amazing..... no it's mind-boggling...... how closely the real audience listens and the detail they give to paying attention.

If you think you are fooling the radio audience, you are only fooling yourself!!!!!

That's the one thing that I can say for the big two stations in this market (WXBQ and WQUT), they know better than to turn the station over completely to a damn computer. I liked what Dennis Kelly used to say about automation. Jocks used to drive "the car", now we are just passengers. But that one comment about electricity, yeah, that was very true.
Automation...plus side...don't have to work Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Automation...down side...if you ain't already in radio, you gonna have a damn hard time breaking in! It's even getting to the point now that you could automate a lot of sports broadcasts, which is how a lot of us got our foot in the door!

All in all, if it means having a job (not a real job, a radio job), I will work the holiday.
At this point, yeah, if it means a full-time job...I will work it!

Back to WRZK/Rock 105.9/95.9 K-Rock/95.9 The Hog. I understand why you want the name change...separate yourself from the Z, but the HOG? PD and airstaff didn't come up with that name. How about 95.9 The Edge. Sorry, a little partial to that.
And I guess you all haven't noticed, but the last time WRZK changed "formats" we went with imaging for several days before they went back on with live jocks. That's just how they do it there. Don't ask cause I never understood it.

Peace,
TWSP

"The EDGE" is already taken squarepants! You didn't go to ETSU? Yeah as minor as it may be, it's the name of the little radio station at ETSU that's on their cable. Not their fault it's on the cable though, the people with the money there are tightwads, not much different than the people some of us might work for. Actually it's too long of a story that I don't care to get into.

And nice to see some editing jockjock. It's been too long. I bet I couldn't guess who you work for!

This is a GREAT move for WRZK.

It's about time.

Now, a giggling morning jock can be replaced.

The "mid-day hick chick" can go back to 'ole Virginia.

Whatever happened to JT on K-Rock? He & the PD are the only good ones.

We need "mod jocks" for this station and area.

And Bruce get "The Mistress" off the Z.

I remember that JT guy, he was pretty good. Furthermore, when you flip a station, shouldn't you have your new website ready too? No one shall ever know the fate of JT because wrzk.com is no more. Yeah. I'll say again, if you're going to do it, do it right.
