Possible new home for "Roseanne"?

It’s not just any joke about an ethnic minority. Grown adults in this country, and certainly someone of Roseanne’s age qualifies, know darn well the despicable history of whites using that type of description for African Americans. This was not just a bad joke or one that missed the mark, it was reprehensible and insidious racism dredging up stereotypes that have no place in a civilized society.

Totally agreed. I compared it to Huckabee-Sanders only because her looks have been such a source of derision. I absolutely cannot stand the woman as a Press Secretary and a unrepentant liar, but I am uncomfortable with the jokes about her appearance. But you are correct, the remarks about Jarrett are in an entirely different category of blatant racism and ignorance.

It will be interesting where Carsey-Werner the owners of Roseanne will send the show if Roseanne gets a reboot again. But then again I don't see Fox or Disney or CBS getting the show. Wikipedia is also reported that CBS is also the owner of Roseanne but I don't think All Access would want that for now

I thought Carsey-Werner owned the show outright. The CBS connection might come from Viacom/Paramount TV distributing the show in the '90s, but I don't think they have anything to do with the show now.

Roseanne is another example of where celebrities need to stop trying to being political commentators, regardless of what side it's on.

I'm pretty sure ABC owns the "Roseanne" name, so any new home would have to come with the blessing of the Mickey Mouse company. Seems unlikely.

But ABC/Disney is only holding the broadcast contract of Roseanne. Carsey-Werner is the owner of Roseanne.

Here's the kicker what will ABC air after the NBA Finals ends. What show has ABC announced that will take Roseanne's spot after the NBA Finals.

Update Carsey Werner is rumored to do a show with the Roseanne Cast without Roseanne.

There could be a scenario in the works where ABC salvages significant parts of Roseanne without having to say goodbye to some of the best actors on television (here’s looking at you, Laurie Metcalf and John Goodman). Though ABC made a swift decision Tuesday to cancel the successful reboot, EW has learned that ABC has not exactly washed its hands of the family comedy.

Here’s the challenge, though: Roseanne was created by Roseanne Barr. The characters were conceived by her and Matt Williams. If the sitcom were to continue without the matriarch, the actress would still benefit financially. So a key insider informs EW that discussions will continue today on whether it makes sense to keep the other actors but potentially design a new series around them — ergo, the Bonners, or whatever you want to call Goodman, Metcalf, and the clan of misfits. Nothing has been decided, however, and various options are still being weighed.

It’s not as if everyone scattered after Tuesday’s cancellation announcement. After ABC ordered a second season of Roseanne in March, EW confirmed that cast options were picked up for another 13 episodes. Carsey-Werner, which produces the sitcom for ABC, is still on the hook for paying those salaries. And since ABC ordered a new season, it bears its own financial brunt from the cancellation. So keeping some kind of show intact wouldn’t be the worst decision for ABC.

Several of Roseanne’s best writers certainly aren’t going anywhere. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, executive producer Dave Caplan noted that he, together with Roseanne EPs Bruce Helford and Bruce Rasmussen, are staying put with ABC. “[They] have a pilot project with Tom Werner for ABC, and we’ll continue working together. I know that Tom really regretted the fact that we had such a wonderful writing staff together — a real rare collection of talent — and I know he’d like to continue using it in some fashion if that were possible.”

Even Barr herself lamented on Twitter about how her actions resulted in hundreds of people being out of work. (Read more of her response on Twitter here). Officially, ABC isn’t talking about any new chapter for the now-beleaguered series, but Disney-ABC Television Group president Ben Sherwood just sent out a statement to staff that said, in part, “we are so sorry the [cast and crew] were swept up in all of this and give thanks for their remarkable talents, wish them well, and hope to find another way to work together down the road.”

Roseanne is another example of where celebrities need to stop trying to being political commentators, regardless of what side it's on.

Yeah, there used to be a grade B actor named Ronald Reagan. He got sick of acting and started talking about politics all the time. Later, he ran for Governor of California and a lot of people made jokes about a "has been actor" who did a bad comedy film with a chimpanzee wanting to become something important. He even changed the pronunciation of his name from "Ree-gun" to "Ray-gun." Everybody thought that was hysterical.

What a joke. I kind of lost track...don't know what happened to that guy.

a reboot without Cliff Huxtable?

It still makes no sense. What “they” would even consider anything associated with that show now? In and of itself, like Roseanne, it was built as a vehicle for the titular star.

Beyond that element, it was a fairly standard template sitcom formula. There would be zero reason to go anywhere near the toxicity of that program to create another family sitcom.

They should call it "Roseanne-less" or "No Roseanne" or "Roseanne: The Afterlife"

Then Roseanne Barr pulls a Charlie Sheen and gets a new show called "The New Adventures of Roseanne" in which she has a new family to annoy her problems with (soon to be picked up by FX).

(this was a joke)

And "hilarity" ensues when the Roseanne character makes racist remarks, like a 21st century Archie Bunker, only it's not funny, just disgusting, because Roseanne is not a fictional lovable working class schlub, Nixon isn't still President, and it's not the 1970's anymore.

I thought Carsey-Werner owned the show outright. The CBS connection might come from Viacom/Paramount TV distributing the show in the '90s, but I don't think they have anything to do with the show now.

Yeah, they do...Carsey-Werner didn't start syndicating their own content until at least 1998 (when Grace Under Fire was cancelled by ABC that same year, and went into off-net syndication that fall). The only other CBS-Roseanne connection is that her sitcom (both the original and revival) were taped at CBS Studio Center in the San Fernando Valley. In fact, with the exception of Bill Cosby's sitcoms under their banner (both were set and taped in New York City), all of the Carsey-Werner sitcoms were filmed/taped in Studio City.

Somebody on Reddit posted the suggestion that they replace Roseanne with Danny DeVito, and act like nothing had changed. I think that is a hilarious idea, and I would definitely watch.
