Possible new home for "Roseanne"?

http://tvline.com/2018/06/01/roseanne-spinoff-darlene-sara-gilbert-abc-renewed/

Update Carsey-Werner is lobbying ABC over a possible Roseanne Spinoff

Darlene to the rescue? Roughly 72 hours after cancelling Roseanne amid controversy, ABC is looking to possibly keep the franchise alive with a spinoff centered on Sara Gilbert’s acid-tongued single mom, TVLine has confirmed.

The standalone Darlene series was one of five offshoots proposed by TVLine in the wake of Roseanne‘s spectacular fall on Tuesday. ABC could not be reached for comment.

It was three days ago that ABC announced it was scrapping the series’ already-greenlit 11th season after its titular star Roseanne Barr tweeted a racist “joke” about Obama advisor Valerie Jarrett. In announcing the cancellation, ABC president Channing Dungey called Barr’s comment “abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values.” Gilbert, meanwhile, said she was “disappointed” in Barr’s actions “to say the least,” while showrunner Bruce Helford said he was “horrified and saddened” by the remark

Barr was later dropped by her talent agency ICM Partners, and TV Land, Paramount Network, CMT and Hulu all announced that Roseanne reruns were being yanked.

Not only would a Darlene series solve ABC’s Tuesday-at-8 pm void, it would save the 200-plus actor/crew/writer jobs that were lost after the axe fell on Roseanne. Barr herself lamented the job-loss factor on Twitter.

Like I said in the other thread this is another example with celebrities and political pundits on both the far-right and far-left need to learn to keep their mouth shut and stay off Twitter.

How does it work for a pundit to keep his/her mouth shut? The point of punditry is to pontificate. And Twitter is a perfectly perfunctory platform for punditry and pontification.

Again, though, it's about being a decent human being, regardless of one's vocation or chosen platform. Celebrities, however one defines it, have been using their platform--for good or ill, depending on your viewpoint and the circumstances--to highlight causes of importance to them for a long time. The fact that someone makes movies, or music, or whatever, doesn't mean they need to be silent any more than the average Joe. But when they choose to be a blatant racist, to use this most recent example, well, yeah, there's going to be an audience that calls you out (including other celebrities).

Agreed.

As for Rosanne on another platform...no. If it does happen, it will be small potatoes. Her career is over for now.

Update Now Bill Maher is being called out for his rants. Now a 4th celebrity (Not including Alex Jones, Trump or Kanye West) is being called out for his rants.

OK - Bill Maher - and as much as I despise the man - Alex Jones, are TOTALLY DIFFERENT! They ARE political pundits. People watch Maher and listen to Jones to hear them rant and say outrageous or funny things. Their job is to push the line of what is socially acceptable. Where they are being called out are the instances when they step over the line and say things that are racist, or sexist. For example, Maher - even though most of his views are pro-left, has said some misogynistic things over the years that have gotten him in trouble. Jones thinks everything that runs counter to his bizarre right-wing view of the world is a left-wing conspiracy. IIRC, he thinks the Sandy Hook school shootings were a leftist conspiracy to convince the public to seize everybody's guns.

Kanye West says dumb s**t because he's crazy.

Well ever since Roseanne got called out for her rants we had three other celebrities (not including the usual ranters Alex Jones, Cable Pundits, YouTube Pundits, Trump and Kanye West). It's becoming a whose next situation so far Joy Reid has been called out for having Alex Jones type beliefs from a decade ago, Sam Bee over the Ivanka Trump Rants. It's a who knows at this point and whose the next person going on this list.

OK I'll adjust my comments to a point. I realize political pundits (and I'll count comedians who go into political humor as well) who are in the business of commenting on politics, and they need to stop the insults on both sides. But when they go into racist or sexist comments that's when they should shut up. But in too many cases entertainers who make political comments from both sides who are doing nothing but showing their ignorance need to shut up.

Johnny Carson did political humor, but made the comment once that he tried to stay neutral because he realized that he could lose half his audience if he went too far. There a quite a few entertainers who need to learn that lesson now.

Regarding Joy Reid, she was having some problems before the Roseanne thing ever happened. They’re not linked.

Carson did what worked for him. More power to him. Plenty of others do roughly the same, whatever their reasons (not losing audience, not having the time, etc.). You don’t hear from them, and they don’t call themselves out as “Hey, look at me, I’ve got nothing to say.”

Others do what works for them. Colbert, for example, has found what he feels works. More power to him, too.

The larger point: those who choose to not remain neutral don’t necessarily have to learn anything. They can weigh the upsides and downsides and make a calculated decision about what works for them. Expressing their opinion may be of a value that supersedes losing audience, if it comes to that.

Syndicated columnist Walter Williams said that what Kanye West said was the same thing Dr. Thomas Sowell said. So it's not all that outrageous. If you believe Williams. He makes a lot of sense but I'm not as conservative as he is.

I think Ivanka Trump is worthy of respect (her only fault is supporting her father, and you can't really blame her for that) and Samantha Bee should be ashamed.

Gawd. Joy Reid never had "Alex Jones type beliefs." Jones is a complete right-wing crackpot. Reid is nothing like that, but apparently said a few things years ago that indicated she may have been homophobic, but has since apologized.

We all need to just relax and stop lumping people together. Kanye West is another - he's obviously a bit on the mentally flaky side - like Rosanne. If you recall, at the Grammys a few years ago, he criticized Taylor Swift getting the award because she was a privileged white woman. He called out George W. Bush for not caring about African-Americans. Now he's apparently spouting some Trumpian garbage. Welcome to the s**t show...get used to it.

Like it or not, we've entered an era in which pundits and pretend-pundits are being called out for saying things that cross the line into tastelessness, racism, or sexism. That doesn't mean the 1st amendment has been abolished or anything like that, It just means there will now be more public scrutiny for a period of time.

One of the most egregious offenders is Donald Trump. During the campaign he trashed Carly Fiorina and Rosie O'Donnell for their appearance, referred to "The Blacks," and accused immigrants of being rapists. And we elected that guy POTUS.

As long as we're pointing out public figures whose political alignment have suddenly and recently changed:
In 2012, Rosanne Barr was a candidate for President of the United States, on the Peace and Freedom party ticket - a socialist party. The party platform includes such ideas as a universal basic income, abolishing the CIA and NSA, abolishing nuclear, chemical and biological weapons, and extending bilingual education. I didn't follow Rosanne's campaign all that closely in 2012, but let's say this party's platform is a departure from her Twitter feed in recent months.
Her running mate was Iraq war protester Cindy Sheehan (famous for camping outside George W. Bush's Texas ranch for weeks in 2005).

Apparently Reid did post on her old blog several 9/11 conspiracy theories and touted Alex Jones "loose Change" movie. Then a couple weeks ago Reid claimed hackers planted the many homophobic post on her blog in which most experts agree that wouldn't be possible, that's probably why RadioPatrol compared the two.

I agree Trump was the start of it all, and it gave license to other people thinking they can do the same thing and get away with it.

The other game that's going on is confusing people and mainstream media in general. So certain writers or hosts say things on their Twitter feed, and that is taken as meaning it's coming from "mainstream media." They're not the same thing.

Actually, since Bill Maher was mentioned, I recalled that he was also fired by ABC - in 2001, though it took the network longer than with Roseanne. He had a late night show similar to his current HBO show, but without the profanity. It was called Politically Incorrect. A week or so after the 9/11 attacks, he refused to agree that the terrorists in the planes that slammed into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon were "cowardly," insisting that their acts took some courage. He was clear that he did not mean in any way that he approved of what they did, or that they weren't murdering scum, but that to give up your life for a cause was an indication of bravery. Though this is likely true, in a literal sense, advertisers pulled out of the show, and it was eventually cancelled - because in the wake of 9/11, saying anything positive about Bin Laden and terrorists was ill-advised.

I also recall that a number of anti-Bush satirical websites were taken down during this period. One featured photos comparing Bush to chimpanzees. But after 9/11, nobody had the heart to trash old "W."

So this kind of public scrutiny of satire, and public comment deemed "over the line" is not exactly new, though the reasons are different.

Here is an Update on Carsey Werner's efforts to sway Channing Dungey of the ABC Entertainment division over efforts to get the Spinoff in production.

While key hurdles remain, a decision is expected within a week or so from ABC on a possible “Roseanne” spinoff built around Sara Gilbert’s character Darlene, Variety has learned.

Industry sources say that Gilbert and fellow “Roseanne” executive producers Tom Werner and Bruce Helford met Monday with ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey. The producers pitched Dungey on a spinoff idea they developed over the weekend that would focus on Gilbert’s character Darlene. A decision could come from ABC as early as this week on whether or not it is willing to move forward with the spinoff.

Indications are that key cast, including John Goodman and Laurie Metcalf, both of whom had been set to star in the upcoming season of “Roseanne” would come aboard for a spinoff. Showrunner Helford and most of the revived series’ writing staff would also be set to participate.

Because schedules had already been cleared to have the new season of “Roseanne” ready in time for fall, production on the possible spinoff could be up and running quickly — though not quick enough that the show could make it onto the schedule in time for the start of the fall season. Insiders noted that the earliest initial episodes might be available to premiere by would be late November.

A major stumbling still appears to be “Roseanne” star Roseanne Barr, whose racist tweet last week prompted ABC to cancel the multicamera comedy that had just recently been crowned TV’s highest rated scripted show in the 18-49 demo. Barr is considered creator of the character Roseanne Connor, a status that is believed to give her a stake in any spinoff. ABC is believed to still be opposed to any deal that would see Barr gain financially from a spinoff on its air.

Working in the spinoff’s favor is the belief that curiosity would drive large audiences to the show’s premiere in much the same way that the “Roseanne” debut benefited from questions over whether and how Barr’s support for President Donald Trump would manifest itself onscreen.

An ABC spokesperson declined to comment for this story.

ABC announced on Tuesday morning that it had canceled “Roseanne” just hours after the star apologized for a racist tweet directed at Valerie Jarrett, a former aide to President Barack Obama. Barr subsequently apologized for the tweet, later blaming it on her consumption of the sleeping drug Ambien. But since the show’s cancellation, she has lashed out at fellow stars and producers, including Gilbert.
