Possible replacement for Lex & Terry...

Howard Stern could have a job again with Clear Channel, says John Hogan - If.
Published on Friday, January 22, 2010

If, that is, Stern can return to terrestrial radio and present a show that’s compatible with FCC standards. John Hogan says (in a statement quoted by Business Week) that Clear Channel “would be the most logical company for [Stern] to optimize his exposure and financial return.” The radio division CEO says “We clearly have the willingness and the financial wherewithal to consider high-profile talent” – including Stern, should he be interested in leaving Sirius XM when his deal expires this December. Stern told Sirius XM colleague Bubba the Love Sponge on Thursday that he’s already got one offer (though “not a bona fide offer”) from a terrestrial radio operator. Stern was pulled off his Clear Channel-owned radio affiliates in 2004 in a bitter parting, at a time when the FCC and Congress were focused on alleged broadcast indecency.

Easy for Hogan to say -- which he did not say an offer has been made.

He hasn't had, yet, to pay the bill for Stern and the advertising community hasn't proven back enough to support, with affiliate fees, such a move.

Howard would take a haircut for such a deal. Limbaugh made a $100-mill signing bonus for his current 8-year deal valued at $400-mill -- nearly half of what Stern makes over 5 years, not counting stock bonus and options. Rush makes an estimated $38-mill a year.

That would be quite a haul if Clear Channel / Premier could pull it off. Doubtful -- longer term for less money. Clear Channel highly leveraged. Getting 300 - 600 stations not as easy as it looks. He didn't have that many stations when he was on terrestrial.

Howard's the only personality that can get me to start listening to DFW again. Imo, Howard was right when he said radio (DFW for sure) would die without him. When I moved to Dallas, I listened to Howard on 105.3. I then went on to listening to most of the 105.3 lineup that over the years included Ron & Don, P&K, Opie & Anthony, Richard Hunter, Ben & Skin, Tom Leykis, etc. (Never really listened to Russ). I also still listened to Jagger on The Edge, plus ocassionally listened to few music stations, although that lessened with the burning of my own CD's and the IPod. After Howard left ( I do have satellite and love it, but still like to listen to local radio at work), it seemed like it was a downhill slide for DFW radio. I stopped listening to the radio for music totally, 105.3 started dropping shows and then flipping all together. Jagger started off on 105.3 ok, but with the flip became unlistenable. In desperation, I ended up listening to Rational Radio on AM!! Now that that's gone, I don't listen to DFW radio at all. There is absolutley nothing on DFW radio that I care to listen to. That's a shame...Bring Howard back and I'll be back. Till then, I'm strictly satellite and internet. This has to be the worst market in the country.

The landscape has changed since Howard left terrestrial radio. I don't know if there's a market for him in Dallas anymore.

Has Howard Stern changed his show format since going to satellite? Because, seriously, porn star interviews and Whack Pack freak show hijinks are Dallas radio's highest aspirations? If so there is something definitely f'd up in the radio industry.

Probably not, that why I don't want him here.

I have no problem with a station picking him up. It is the talk of him being the savior of terrestrial radio that astounds me. Are my tastes so far out of whack to want something more substantial than Howard Stern?

Sounds like what every jock tried to do after Howard did it. But actually, I've listened to Howard since I was in my 20's way before I moved to DFW and believe it or not, the porns stars, whack packs, etc were not my favorite parts of his show. I enjoy Howard when he's just being Howard talking about his life, childhood, current events, etc. Like him or not, whatever he did worked. Most of his old markets have been scrambling since he left. I know 105.3 has never recovered and FM talk has continued to wither away.

And I don't know if there's a market for Howard any more. I do think most of his old listeners that didn't go to satelite have proabably moved on, and good luck drawing the youngsters away from their Ipods to listen to 4 hours of talk. But I do know if he came back I would have talk on terrestrial radion to listen to at work. Right now, there's nothing. Well, there's alway Rush.....just kidding, I would honestly eat a homeless man's a## first.

Correct em if I am wrong, and i am NOT slamming Howrard, but I don't hink he had as good of raitings on 105.3 as he did on the Eagle. I seem to rememeber he did not do as well. I don't think it was promoed enough

Ratings are one thing....Revenue is another.

...true 'dat! Besides, Howard Stern and Mel Karmazin are BBF's and I would be very surprised if he took the terrestrial route again. The only 'plus' for him in switching would be the tenfold increase in listenership. But, maybe that's his hot button. We'll see.

Bravo! I totally agree with that statement. I loved listening to Howard in the mornings.... I had never been that entertained by a morning show, ever, except for Stern's show. However, I have heard his show NOW... and it seems to have lost a ton of what made it so compelling & entertaining. I could care less for the "Alright, get naked crap".... that's stupid radio. I enjoyed the conversations, the real life commentary. I mean, one of the most entertaining parts of the show, back in the day, was when Robin read the news.... the back and forth between Stern, Robin etc... was great.

It still is, Crow. Robin's news with Howard's commentary and Fred's sound effects, still the best part of the show. That, and his interviewing skills are pretty top notch as well. I bet he stays, or retires. I don't think he wants to deal with censorship, indecency, and the FCC again. Just my opinion.

What makes you think KEGL is bringing someone who's syndicated? J.D. Freeman is trying to re-tool the morning show that involves playing more music. I think KEGL is going to bring someone who's local.

on terrestrial: Do people prefer Talk shows or music or a mix of the two? I don't think anyone really knows. Talk is expensive, music is cheap and cume's well. For talk to pay off, it has to hit hard. Lex and Terry were not doing well on the edge.
