Possible Univision sale?

Lots of chatter about the possible sale of Univision, which could have a major impact here in Houston. The group has two TV's, four FM's and one AM in the market.

One potential buyer is CBS, which would create all kinds of market cap issues across the country. In Houston the TV stations would be okay, but three of the FM's would have to be spun off.

Time Warner is another possible suitor; would be interesting to see what they would do with the stations. Perhaps nothing would really change in that case, as TW could expand its Hispanic reach.

I'm sure Liberman would love to get ahold of the Houston Univision FM's while unloading their current rimshots...but with Liberman's money woes that probably won't happen.

Anyone care to add their speculation?

I'll play, Frog...

Cumulus. Take it to the bank, at least here in Houston. KRBE won't remain a stand alone for long, and they could return 93-3 to the Triangle as a part of the KQXY cluster.

Cumulus cannot afford new debt or stations..only in trades...93.3 could not be a Triangle station...it would be over cap since 96.1 in Lake Charles is planning on returning to the tower built for it back in the 80s...and it will throw city grade over Beaumont and count in the cap limits for Cumulus (it was moved back to Lake Charles because of that when Cumulus bought the cluster)...Liberman has serious issues (not only money), though they would love to get their hands on the in market signals of Univision...Only name I have heard bandied about is CBS.....but they have a good number of FMs already in Houston...and other major markets (Dallas especially...there were be lots of spin offs there) so there would be a chance for Cumulus to get their hands on the properties if they can cough up the money (which is somewhat unlikely right now; they took a bath selling 97.5 and 103.7...93.3 would be a similar signal and that would not be any good to Cumulus)

Ah hell, well there goes my speculative contribution.

CBS...really? I mean, you'd be adding another crappy AM to the cluster, which they already have with KIKK, and still can't figure out what to do with it, plus CBS would have to drop a couple of the FMs either acquired, or that they already have in the portfolio.

Obviously KQBU would be spun off, and likely KAMA as well, but that still leaves their "new cluster" with KKHH, KHMX, KILT-FM, KLOL, KLTN, and KOVE. That'd be 6 FMs and 3 AMs.

What do you keep and what gets tossed if CBS is the winning suitor?

You toss KIKK AM if you have to (shame it cannot go 24/7 at lower power; I mean, really who listens to WSM in Houston on a regular basis? Their stream is clean and stereo iirc!)..but I dont think they would in this case....

CBS would NOT keep any rimshots...so toss them...keep 106.5 since it is not really a rimshot..other than that, they would be ok..

Professional outlets have already said CBS is reportly in talks with Univision..

time will tell...

This p.o.s. site! Just logged me out after a wordy response...that's the third time it's happened in the past week.

Let's try again. KIKK divested is a no brainer. Move the CBS Sports Radio feed to 1010, where it's OTA 24/7, done and done.

But...

If you're CBS, do you walk away from KAMA so easily? Not exactly a rimshot, coming from downtown Houston, smack in the middle of Harris County. KQBU is, as you said, a foregone conclusion, but why would you ditch a Houston signal for a Galveston one? I know overall KOVE is stronger, but not up here in the north side. 104-9 and 106-5 are pretty well on equal footing north of 1960.

Maybe KLTN? That's on an old tower, east of DT, shared with KCOH. Money concerns or not, you'd have to believe Liberman would do everything possible to acquire it. Sell off 107-9, 103-3, and maybe even 98-5, and I'd think that'd be more than enough In the bank to make a bid on 102-9.

CBS would probably keep 102.9; although it is not on a Missouri City stick, it is still a popular format on a solid signal which thoroughly covers the target demos.

Any spinoff of 104.9 might include a non-compete stipulation to eliminate the chief competitor to Mega 101.

Any sale of the Liberman rimshots would probably not bring in enough to buy either 104.9 or 106.5. No point in going after 93.3, which would be a prime candidate for a format flip (to what is anyone's guess.)

Interesting thought about moving CBS Sports Radio to 1010. 650 would wind up as brokered ethnic/religion under new owners.

Would love to see Liberman get rid of 103.3 so a new owner could actually build the upgrade that has been talked about for the last 15 years...

From what I know, the eventual plan was to plant 104.9 out at the Mo City farm as a C1....whether that will happen remains to be seen...Liberman would be happy to get 102.9, 104.9 or 106.5....but with the money issues (and I saw that coming 10 years ago when I worked for them!), that likely won't happen...someone else would grab them likely (Cumulus maybe in a swap deal). I thought Liberman had started to work on the upgrade of 103.3 (but that only means a build of a 2000 ft tower..its already 100KW ERP; it cant really move north any due to 102.9)

Also any spin off cannot include a non-compete...that won't happen. The FCC will not allow that

Lol, I don't think a non-compete would be necessary. 104-9 isn't exactly blazing any trails in the ratings, and regardless of who would end up with it likely faces a format flip.

Maybe I missed it, is this just the radio division up for grabs, or is the TV for sale too?

Ah...well that opens up all kinds of new speculation for the board to kick around.

With 45 and 67 under CBS ownership, who needs an affiliation with Gannett on 11? Do they pull CBS from 11, move it to 45 and leave 11 as an indy?

Does CBS then move Univision to 67, with UniMas at .2 and Get TV at .3?

Does UniMas survive a new owner?

How does Gannett respond? Steal the NBC affiliation from Post Newsweek's KPRC?

I mean, if we're going to speculate, let's just go for broke...

I don't know who would buy the San Antonio radio stations that Univison owns certainly not at their current asking price.

L&L could spin off their weak frequencies 95.7, Dial tone 103.1, and 104.1 in exchange for 92.9, 95.1, and 98.5. Which would leave 107.5 which couldn't go to Cox or Clear Channel because they are both maxed out.

Educational Media Foundation could purchase 107.5
Lieberman has financial woes and most likely will not enter the San Antonio market.

As for Houston, spinning off 93.3, 102.9, 104.9, and 1010 AM Cumulous Media is out of the picture except for KRBE, Radio One has had financial difficulties, but could probably be able to purchase 1010 AM, and maybe 93.3. Educational Media Foundation could pick up 104.9 to complement 103.7. CBS could purchase 102.9 and do something with it.

Latest info I've read have both Time Warner and CBS balking at the proposed sale price.

It's fun to speculate about Univision being sold off for parts, but an equally likely outcome is that the current investment groups simply sell to a different consortium of investment groups, and nothing really changes as far as on-air product goes.
