Post 1490

Post 1490 is about KBRO...

Whatever happened to this station? Is it still around? Is anybody actually DOING something WORTHWHILE on 1490 kHz since the fall of the gay talk network?
______________

Yes it is still around and it is still simulcasting KNTB 1480 in Lakewood, after the gay talk network folded I believe it started a computer-automated oldies format and currently it has a spanish music format. Hope this helps

Bremerton's old KBRO Bldg

I haven't been there in years, but is the old brown KBRO Building still in Bremerton?

Back in the 70's-80's an elderly woman, Lillian Bartley (wife of Bruce Bartley),
took over ownership of KBRO after Bruce died; They had a Sales Mgr (Douglas Hicks)
that would actually RUN the station since she didn't know squat about radio.

Anyone know if these people (and the bldg's studios) are still around?

I was through Bremerton a few weeks ago. The building is still there, kitty corner from the Girls Scouts building. It's no longer brown, though, it's been painted some sort of off-white/cream/beige.

Does it say 'KBRO' on the bldg's front? -any radio studios still there?

- probably not

Is it that building on Wheaton Way. I remember driving by there some years ago (last time I was in Bremerton..) It housed the studios of KBRO-AM and KWWA-FM (now KRWM)....

The building is still there and is empty, I'm assuming everything's been liquidated - when I started there, the station had been on Wheaton Way in EAST Bremerton next to the DENNY's restaurant and Domino's pizza. I worked there the last year the station was on the air - I want to say around '91 when it was a country station and after a couple months, KBRO moved BACK to it's original location where its current building is. It was my first radio job and 8 months later - my last. Just couldn't get enough sales to keep the station on the air - we were litterally BEGGING for money from the community. I blame the advertising agencies for it's demise. When a local business (or major one for that matter) has their commercial produced through a ad agency (because they could offer a better rate to produce it than we could), the station hardly got ANYTHING to put that commercial on the air. We knew it was getting bad when the station manager tried digging into his pocket to pay some of the airstaff. Heck, we even tried to do an employee buyout by having everyone chip in a grand. Of course, no one had that kind of money. I believe I was the last employee left after it was all over (I was temporarily living at home at the time since I went on unemployment and I needed to use as much time I had left to get demo tapes done before the station went "dark").

Didn't have much luck getting on another station so gave up on it and started a mobile DJ business. KBRO ended up turning into a MEXICAN music station and was basically used as a "remote site" - no local DJ's. THEN they went "ALTERNATIVE LIFESTYLE - gay, if you will, and I thought the station was moved to the Seattle area.

I don't see any of the old staff, BUT one person I did hear that's still around , if she still goes by her air name "Charlie Brooks", she's working on KLSY last I heard.

Re: Bremerton's old KBRO Bldg

Great info about KBRO history! Love this stuff ... and thanks for sharing.

I see it's now owned by "Seattle Streaming Radio, LLC" (along with 1480 in Lakewood and one other in Florida). But could not find much info on who that company is; other than it apparently picked up assets of both stations around July from "FTP Corporation" (which almost sounds like one of the competitors that would be on "The Apprentice"!!)

The company I used to work for had a janitorial contract with KBRO back in the late 80's. We'd get there around one or two in the morning and do our job. Chip Knight was doing overnights while he was going to Olympic College. He was later replaced by a guy named Greg. Fun and interesting folks. This was when the studios were located on Wheaton Way. I remember when the studios were located downtown.
______________

This can also be considered as part of Kitsap County history. Pat O'Day(as I recall) actually started his radio career at KBRO as a janitor.
______________

KBRO's OWNER

Who OWNED KBRO in the 80's and 90's?

I recall Lillian Bartley took it over when her husband
(and the first original owner?) Bruce Bartley died sometime in the 70's

Surely she must be dead by now
anyone know for sure?

I don't know about the 80's, but LATE 90's the station owner was owned by the Borcheding Family (sp?) (Dave Borcheding was the only one of the family I met when I was there).
