Post-Super Bowl shows

This year, NBC opted for an episode of "The Office" to follow the Super Bowl. But I know the networks that carry the game have debuted new shows right after the big game or have used that coveted timeslot for other special programming. Can anyone recall what other shows have followed the Super Bowl? And when did the networks start doing this?

The Wonder Years followed Super Bowl XXII in 1988 on ABC. Family Guy followedSuper Bowl XXXIII in 1999 on FOX. Those were the debuts of those two series. I know ABC ran an episode of Alias when they had Super Bowl XXXVII in 2003 while FOX ran an episode of House M.D. last year.

And from what I read, that post-Super Bowl "Office" didn't get as big a rating as "House" did in the same slot last year - despite the game itself having a bigger audience than Super Bowl XLII!

This is a list several of us compiled on another message board, from I to XLIII:

XLIII 2009 (NBC): The Office
XLII 2008 (Fox): House
XLI 2007 (CBS): Criminal Minds

XXXIV 2000 (ABC): The Practice
XXXIII 1999 (Fox): Family Guy/The Simpsons
XXXII 1998 (NBC): Third Rock from the Sun
XXXI 1997 (Fox): The X-Files
XXX 1996 (NBC): Friends
XXIX 1995 (ABC): Extreme
XXVIII 1994 (NBC): The Good Life
XXVII 1993 (NBC): Homicide: Life on the Street
XXVI 1992 (CBS): 60 Minutes (Bill Clinton Interview)
XXV 1991 (ABC): Davis Rules
XXIV 1990 (CBS): Grand Slam
XXIII 1989 (NBC): Brotherhood of the Rose
XXII 1988 (ABC): The Wonder Years

XII 1978 (CBS): All in the Family
XI 1977 (NBC): The Wonderful World of Disney/TV Movie: "Raid on Entebbe"
X 1976 (CBS): Phoenix Open Golf Tournament
IX 1975 (NBC): NBC Nightly News (Garrick Utley?)
VIII 1974 (CBS): *The New Perry Mason
VII 1973 (NBC): Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom
VI 1972 (CBS): 60 Minutes
V 1971 (NBC): Bing Crosby Pro-Am Golf Tournament (aka "The Crosby Clambake")
IV 1970 (CBS): Lassie
III 1969 (NBC): The G.E. College Bowl
II 1968 (CBS): *Lassie
I 1967 (CBS): Lassie, (NBC): Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color

*Local programming immediately following the post game show, first network offering.

Hope this is of interest.

Wasn't in 2007 CBS aired Numbers after the Super Bowl? Thats what I thought.

Then again that could of been after a AFC Championship game.

Nope, it was in fact "Criminal Minds". Honestly, I didn't even remember exactly what show followed Super Bowl XLI; all I remember is that CBS' Jim Nantz had a cameo in the first segment of the show that followed. So I hit up IMDB.com, and he is credited in the 2007 episode of "Criminal Minds" titled, "The Big Game":

Yep I remember that now.

Then I guess it had to be a AFC Champ game for CBS to show Numbers after it. As they had a countdown clock in the top right corner.

'Numbers' followed the telecast of the January '05 AFC title game (which the Pats won in Pittsburgh; the following year's Steelers-Broncos clash was the early kickoff).

Probably had something to do with the relative popularity of the series. House had roughly twice as many viewers last week as The Office does in its normal timeslot.

This was a syndicated program by this time -- NBC cancelled Wild Kingdom in 1971.

Looking at timmyb's post of the history of the post Super Bowl shows made me think: When did the NFL and the networks make the change from where the Super Bowl was played mostly in the afternoon and then going into prime time to where the game would start around 6 PM ET and take up most of prime time for the night with perhaps an hour for another show afterward?

According to Wikipedia, the game started being played every year just after 6 pm ET after Super Bowl XXV (1991).

And looking at that list, it appears that a few shows have debuted after the game. "The Wonder Years" and "Family Guy" come to mind. I think Jimmy Kimmel launched his ABC show after Super Bowl XXXVII as well. No idea about the others.

azumanga,

After digging a little deeper, you are right. However, after scouring newspaperarchive.com newspaper offerings of the time, syndicated programming was offered up right after Super Bowl VII. It does appear that "Wild Kingdom," which had gone into syndication after being cancelled by NBC in 1971, was still carried by a bevy of NBC affiliates, including WNBC in New York in January of 1973 in the 7 PM time slot.

So, that listing should read "Wonderful World of Disney" as the first network offering following local programming.
