Post your favorite Seattle DJs

I have been listening to Seattle radio since about 1980 when I was ten years old. My friend Paul said there's these guys on KISW that do a Leave to Beaver show on the radio. My dad was older and wasn't into most popular music, so I was a little late being exposed to rock radio. Immediately I was hooked. I gravitated toward the heavier stuff that was on KISW and it has been the number one on my presets in all my vehicles since my first digital tuner in about 1986.

With the exit of Scott Vanderpool at KZOK, that's the last of the DJs I have actively followed. I know that it doesn't seem to matter anymore. Ask my wife to name and DJs and she'd be hard pressed to. She had no idea was voice tracking was or that Deliah was not actually broadcasting from KAFE in Bellingham.

Anyway, the first DJ that spoke to me was Steve Slaton. He was on in the evenings when I started listening and was my teacher of all things rock. I learned a lot from him. I remember when he was let go by KISW and couldn't believe it. I was listening when he made a guest appearance on The X.

Of course, my friend and I wanted to Crow & West later on in the mid '80s. I still listen to airchecks from them, along with Robin & Maynard and held out hope for the longest time that they would have a place in Seattle radio.

For a while, if it wasn't on KISW, KXRX or KZOK, I didn't hear it on the radio. A little later on there was Cathy Faulkner, Scott Vanderpool, Norman B, Marco Collins, Bob Rivers and Nate Connors. The End was exciting when it first came on.

The long slide has come to an end for me. I will still listen to KISW and KZOK, but I find myself listening to less.

Who are your favorite Seattle DJs?

I wish there was a way to say hi to them. Does anyone have any contact information for them?

We have a group of DJ Alumni from 60's/70's Seattle Radio.
I copied your post to an email and sent it to the group...and I KNOW they will be grateful to hear your thoughtful comments!

Mike West said he'd make a 2020 "Leave it to Beaver" message for you. He appreciated your comments.
Can you send me a message with your email address?
(I just realized we can't do messages on this newer board. You can leave a message @ skiswap at cfmm-dot-com)

I haven't been alive long enough to remember any of the amazing DJs that graced the airwaves back in the 70's and 80's, but I'd still like to list a few hosts, both current and historically, who have made Seattle radio what it is.

Historically:
Beau Roberts (I never had the opportunity to listen to his show, but voiceover work was some of the best in the business).
Gary Crow
Mike West
Steve Slaton
Scott Vanderpool
Bob Rivers
Nate Connors
Ichabod Caine
Stacie Ireland (She hasn't been on the radio in quite some time, but her show was always on the radio when I was growing up).
Marty Reimer
Cathy Faulkner

Current:
BJ Shea and Company (I'm glad that Entercom has left this show alone, as I think that they put on one of the best morning shows around).
Jodi Brothers and Bender Cunningham
Danny Bonneduce and Sarah
Matt Case
Shellie Hart
Ryan Castle
Taryn Daily
Deanna Lee (she technically isn't on the radio right now, but she definitely should be).
Wingnut from "The Bull."

I left the market in 1990, so I really can only list 70's/80's talent. I was mostly a top40 listener during this era, so my list is top heavy in that format. I am sure this list will leave out some that deserve to be on it, but here goes...

70's

Charlie Brown (KJR) rip
Gary Lockwood (KING and KJR) rip
Ric Hansen (KJR)
Bruce Murdock (KING)
Dan Foley (KING)
Andy Barber (KING)
Tracy Mitchell (KJR)
Beau Roberts (KNBQ) rip
Ichabod Caine (KJR)
Gary Bryan (KNBQ)

80's

Charlie Brown (KUBE) rip
Gary Lockwood (KJR) rip
Bruce Murdock (KLSY)
Ichabod Caine (KMPS)
Gary Bryan (KUBE)
Bob Case (KUBE)
Kent & Alan (KPLZ)
Mark Allen (KPLZ)

I got the email from Mike West. This is the best Christmas present! Thanks LLB for the assistance.

Maynard sent me an email as well.

The "Leave it to Beaver" bits were actually originally on the Langan & West Morning Show on KISW. Crow was on with Bob Hovanes in the afternoon drive, broadcasting from the Thai Stick Lounge. Dr. Rock, Jeff McIntosh was on in the middays, soon to be replaced by Larry "CPO Sharpy" Sharp. Steve Slaton was on in the evenings, with Jessie Brandon & John Napier in the late nights. This was the lineup in 1980 that had the first number 1 Arbitron rating for an FM in Seattle history.

Had to come back and add a few hosts to the list!

Kent and Allen
Delilah
The Mens Room Crew
Charlie and Ty (I have had the privilege to meet Ty, and he is by far one of the finest people in the business. He's an incredibly kind and talented person).

Shawn Stewart on The Mountain
Rick Lambert (early KNDD)
Jon Richards (specialty on KNDD/mornings at KEXP)
Cheryl Waters, Kevin Cole, and many, many of the KEXP hosts.

I well remember that lineup. It seemed at the moment, that KISW could do no wrong. And from the entertainment value of the programming, one could see why. Ironically, in 1980, AC/DC sold out the Seattle Center Coliseum for four nights in a row, which was an amazing feat at the time. There is a poster of Brian Johnson wearing a KISW 'Rock' jersey, possibly taken during one of those shows.
