Yeah this aurora is pretty crazy. In Chicago even the Toronto stations are gone much of the time, which is pretty rare. At the worst, basically every station over 200 miles away is gone. But there are good moments too when many of the usual powerhouses are there although weaker than usual. And for some reason, WKCI 970 in Waynesboro, VA is coming in quite well.

Checking the very sensitive Edinburgh, Ind. (east-southeast of Indianapolis) SDR:

Very auroral conditions favorable to the south: 530 Radio Encyclopedia in decent; 670 WSCR buried under Cuba; 720 WGN wiped out; 740 CFZM cutting through with little trouble; 760 WJR in but weaker than usual; 650, 700, 750, 840 in solid from the south. More to come …

Starting to hear more stations, but now Northern CA is creeping in and getting much stronger (i.e., lots and lots of relogs). Sample bandscan so far

1600 KUBA / weak KVRI off the back
1590 KVTA
1580
1570 KCVR
1560 KNZR
1550 KZDG
1540 KMPC
1530 KFBK
1520 KKZZ
1510 unid probably KSFN
1500 KSJX
1490 stuff under nearby KYNR, probably KOWL, KRKC, et. al
1480 KEJB
1470 XERCN / unid probably KIID
1460 KION
1450 Asian station on top, sounds like needed KOBO Yuba City, will monitor this. 3-4 others underneath
1440 KVON
1430 unids
1420 KSTN
1410 KMYC / KERI
1400 graveyard
1390 KLTX
1380 KLPZ Parker AZ, country music, weak but alone
1370 KGEN Tulare + the Mexicali station
1360 unid KFIV?
1350 KSRO
1340 graveyard slop
1330 KWKW / KLBS
1320 weak signal KIFM?
1310 KMKY
1300 KROP - signal is distorted + noisy, like it's coming off an FM radio 40 mi. from the KGBA-FM transmitter
1290 unid KAZA?

Noting La Mera Mera on 980, KFWB Los Angeles, mostly alone. XECL on 990.

Again from the Edinburgh, Ind., SDR:

NYC 770 and 880 in strong, 710 less, 660 absent.

At the top of the band, 1690 WVON Chicago in but battling with an all-night trucker show from who knows where. Can’t nail it down quickly.

WMLB Atlanta, Freedom 1690. Red Eye Radio airs 1-5AM ET. The only 'trucking' part about it is the ads and weather forecasts. The rest of it is basic conservative talk and call-in.

Huh, interesting.

At my location, the band is mostly noise, but KYNO came in, so conditions must be improving.

Otherwise, it's weird.

Even many locals are weaker and noisier than normal, except the usual powerhouses: KGO, KCBS, KNBR, KEAR and KSFO.

I briefly scanned HF, and I got a handful of UNID stations that sounded Chinese, in addition to WWVH on 5 and 10 MHz. Otherwise it, too is a noisy mess (although it usually is most of the time here, so not much different than usual).

Last night at around 11:30pm EST, I got 860 WAOB Millvale, PA. I heard some choir-based sacred music. No ID was given, but the programming matched with the internet stream. CJBC Toronto, ON came in weaker than usual to the point that I was able to null it out completely.

Just after 1am, I got 960 WFIR Roanoke, VA for the first time in over a year. It aired ABC News, a local weather forecast and Coast to Coast AM. WEAV Plattsburgh, NY which normally comes in was much weaker than usual at the time.

Last night in Kansas I got a new one, 940 KIXZ from Amarillo, Texas, around 600 miles away
That was a regular for me in SE WY when i had my big loop ppointed that way because they kidna aimed in my direction.

Conditions back to normal except for no eastern signals. But UT, WY, and other nearby states are strong as are the northern CAs. 1390 is KLGN Logan UT w/ 500 watts, Fox Sports, and a little KLTX plus others buried. Think I'm hearing KGRG Enumclaw on 1330 with rock music, which would be a rare log at only 78 miles. KWKW is also in.

Saturday at around 6pm EST, I got 940 WCPC Houston, MS from about 945 miles away. It was accompanied by some splatter from my local 930 WPAT Paterson, NJ. The signal was faint at first, but got better at times. I heard the call letters at around 6:15pm. It was airing Christian programming and announcements.

Had some weak FMBC Sporadic-E earlier this evening.

92.3 KNFM Midland, TX 1164 Miles. A relog

Sporadic-E up in FM broadcast is pretty unusual for early December. Normally appears late December. I've had FMBC Es in January but not December before.
