For a good time on New Year's Eve....

....Simply dial up the Arctic SDR!

Which I did starting at about 8pm CST (0200 zulu)

680: I began here, expecting Alaska. Instead it was CFTR with an interesting (presumably syndicated) retrospective of 1968 music.
950: CFAM. Others have been hearing it, but not me. So I guess it was my turn.
1010: Presumably CFRB, but I couldn't positively ID it.
1160: KSL. First time I heard it, and the signal was really good.
1250: CJYE. Fair. Mixing and eventually got on top. (This signal is the original home of what eventually became CFZM/740)
1290: CFRW. Good and alone with Winnipeg Jets hockey
1300: WOOD. Almost as good as CFRW and also alone. Mild surprise
1310: CIWW. The surprise here was that I hadn't heard it sooner! Signal was fair-good.
1520: WWKB. Not exactly an impressive signal. Fair at best, but mostly alone.
1530: KFBK. Good

....And, @jim-satx: XEG is a true "blast from the past" for me. They used to be a regular here and points west before all those daytimers on 1050 were allowed to go fulltime. I haven't heard them in ages and had been wondering if they were still on.

So I guess they are! :)

I did check out the arctic SDR for awhile on New Years Eve. It was about 0500z and I heard a fairly strong KBRW. That is an interesting station as sometimes they’re airing 70s music as they were last night or religion or public affair programming. You just never know what you’re going to hear with their variety. Also, KNOM was in on 780, no sign of WBBM or any Midwest station when I listened. KSL was in on 1160 with no hint of WYLL which is sometimes on top. I guess it all depends on when you tune in.

That's becoming increasingly clear to me with the artic SDR!

That receiver is the "gift that keeps on giving" this Holiday season. Two new ones for me on that radio last night around 8:30 CST....

1050: CHUM with Toronto Raptors basketball pbp. The signal was fair but steady.

1150: WHBY, Appleton, WI (near Green Bay). Also fair but steady. Canned talk show, but mentions of Appleton/Fox Cities during local break.

I've snagged both of these multiple times on various radios here at my home location. But first time for me on the SDR.

Not in the AM band - but the Algerian station (Radio Chaine) on 252 KHz is extremely strong right now in Boston using my longwire antenna -never heard it like this before - and it is even coming in quite well on a Sony ICF-2001D on the internal loopstick.

Has anyone received 580 WTCM on the Arctic SDR? 50kW day, 1.1kW night and sending most of that juice north/northeast

580 has been pretty much a mess on the times I've checked it. I thought I might have had CFRA one night a couple of weeks ago, but I couldn't ID it.

KBRW was local sounding on the Arctic SDR around midnight Eastern last night, with a girls' high school basketball game. Dare I say things sounded a little auroral? (Though woldn't auroral propagation conditions be all the time this time of year)

I’ve caught KBRW on the Arctic SDR sounding very local as well. I never know what they may have on. They air quite a variety of programming. Have you caught KNOM yet?

I think I've heard KNOM, along with the 660, 820 and 970 in Fairbanks, also KFQD, and others. This all on the ArcticSDR of course.

KBRW notwithstanding, I don't seem to be having much luck with Alaska on the arctic SDR. Canada, however, is a different story. My latest catches from the last few nights....

710: CKVO Clarenville, Newfoundland. Relay of VOCM. 10kw. Fair signal, but cofortably on top.
750: CBGY Bonavista Bay, Newfoundland (Presumed....multiple mentions of Newfoundland) also 10kw
800: CKLW Weak but steady
1220: CJRB Boissevain, MB. 10kw. Weak, but on top for most of 10 minute. Religion.

Interesting one just now from Houston. 1100 is now (9pm CST) dominated by Radio Canon with SS ballads and clear R. Canon IDs and referencing an FM frequency I couldn't catch. XETGO in Tlaltenango Zacatecas is listed as R. Canon in MWlist, but per Wikipedia may have moved to FM. Can someone confirm this is still on? It's surely on 5kw daytime power tonight if that's what it is.

Usually 1100 here is mostly WTAM, with KDRY from San Antonio an occasional catch near sunset.

It’s definitely XETGO that you were hearing. I can get a partial null of KDRY, and XETGO is there playing a Calibre 50 song that matches the station’s webstream.

1AM PT this morning
990 KTMS Santa Barbara w/ Coast to Coast under CBW - 500 watts
1400 KIHH Eureka CA with TOH ID, Relevant Radio
1450 unid with 'Right Down the Line' Gerry Rafferty then faded near TOH. Not KBPS. No clue.

Not really DX, but 1040 CKST Vancouver is looping the XDS test channel from Westwood One's technical operations center with tones on L, R and both channels. They probably aired one of the NFL Wild Card games and forgot to flip back to ESPN or TSN programming afterwards. Embarrassing (for one of Canada's largest cities no less!), but they won't notice until the morning crew gets there later.

Did some shortwave listening over the weekend and managed to hear Voice of Hope Africa from Lusaka, Zambia on 13680 kHz at 17:00 UTC with religious programming. Sent them a reception report via e-mail and they replied that a QSL will be in the mail shortly. I have heard Zambia on shortwave on many occasions in the past, but never got a QSL from that country. I don't send out reception reports these days, but this is a special case. This will be radio country (per NASWA list) number 198 QSLed when it arrives.

From Houston, monitoring 1090 at the top of the 7pm CST hour, heard KAAY on top, but someone carrying Fox Sports Radio news underneath. The only 1090 listing I see that carries some Fox programming is KFNQ Seattle. This would be ~30 minutes past Seattle sunset, so theoretically possible, but does anyone know if another station on 1090 would be running Fox Sports news? I was driving so couldn't check stream.

KVOP Plainview, TX is sports, i forget which network.. I've heard them up here in Wyoming

Another GY catch this morning. Also in the "approximately 200 mile range"....but probably more like 250. Anyway on 1340 about 5am. KROC, Rochester, MN on top for about five minutes. Enough time for a positive ID.

FYI if you want to figure out your exact distance from a station.. go to www.radio-locator.com then click the yellow I button if you come up with an AM/FM with the same calls.. or just click the co-ordinates..... it will load google maps. right click on the marker for the transmitter/tower, click measure distance, then in the upper left type in your address at home, hit enter...... then right click and enter distance to here.. and you have the distance down to the tenth of am ile
