Another new one for me, that I'll have to label as tentative. WIOI, 1010 from New Boston, OH. 5am CDT, an hour and 15 min before sunrise. Adult standards with weak signal....presumably 1kw ND day power. The Canada/US AM database only lists two stations on 1010 with that format. The other is WMIN in the Saint Cloud, MN, which has a pattern that puts me in their null.

From south Overland Park, Kansas:

Last night in my car between 8:30-9:00pm CDT, I logged a very listenable WABC. I also logged WCBS but the they were not as strong. WFAN could not be heard. While these stations have all been previously logged on multiple occasions, it is highly unusual to hear any station from New York City at my location for such a long period of time with a listenable signal. WABC had Bruce Morrow on with his Oldies show, a fun listen. My distance from NYC is 1,101 miles.

Bruce is back on WABC at night on Saturdays. A throwback to the 6os and definitely a nice listen.

Sweet that you all are getting Bruce Morrow back. I drove about 15 miles west of Cheyenne, and a random classical station appeared on 90.7, disappearing as I drove back. I went to the Granite area. Any ideas?

I think Wyoming Public Radio runs classical music at night, so maybe one of their stations?

Edit: Their map shows one on 90.7 in Lingle, about 80 miles from Granite. Maybe that's it.

Could be, I get Torrington occasionally. This was around 5pm in the afternoon, however.

So? FM DX isnt relegated to morning or evening.. its more likely to happening at those times, it seems.. but it can happen at anytime, unlike AM

I think his point is WPR wouldn't be running classical music at 5pm, it would be All Things Considered. In fact, the timing would rule out most NPR stations anywhere near the OP. Maybe an E-skip opening?

I've had it at all hours of the day, for different reasons :). I'm not ruling it out, I'm just saying that if it's troposhperic in nature, it's less likely in the afternoon. But, expect the unexpected this year, I suppose!

That's also a fair point. It would be great if there was E-skip this late in the season!

Derp, having lived in Laramie for 2 years, sampling WPR and now running an NPR station in Alaska, i should know that but didnt catch it

I dont think it was the Omaha station.. in my expierience, tropo which wasnt very fruitful in laramie.... was generally confined to an area from torrington to scotssbluff and northern colorado... Omaha would be too

I cant find anything in northern colorado that matches

You cant rule out VNO, but if its not them, then id have to wager errant, random eskip.. but with no recording and no other evidence to go on (like hearing another station) we have nothing to go on

This morning at 3:45am CDT, I logged CKLW on 800 kHz. I have a logged CKLW in the past during critical hours when they are on day pattern but never at night. The signal was steady but not strong.

Bob

For sure. I used to struggle to hear CKLW in the Chicago area during their Top 40 days. Too often it wasn't easy.
I've mentioned before that though many people have memories of listening to CKLW at night from far away, we had a huge daytime signal in Western Ohio (likely better than some parts of Windsor and Detroit) but with the change to night pattern. we were in the null to Mexico, plus PJB

I remember being in the ORD/NWC area in November, 1968, and tuning in an old radio in the 800s. I heard WAIT sign off, and was hearing WFAA or WBAP on 820. I remember hearing "Rambling Gambling Man", I think it must have been on CKLW, as it was way before WLS was officially playing it, and before the WLS Michigan DJ invasion in the 1970s, where one of them might have sneaked it in on a Holiday. It was coming in quite well. There were no 800s on at Night in the US at the time, and the closer you got to Mexico, the fewer 800s there were in the Daytime. So it was in the clear except for XEROK, but it wasn't near Sunset there yet.

Doesn't CKLW send a nighttime minor lobe to the west southwrest? I'm pretty sure their signal turns up on a fairly frequent basis in Central Illinois. Which would be the same general direction of DXBob's location near Kansas City. IME, CKLW downstate tends to be better than it is here at my home location in the Chicago area. Which isn't saying much. On most nights for me, CKLW is quite weak, but still on top of the channel. The exception was a year or so ago when WVAL from Sauk Rapids, Minnesota was staying oon day power all night for about a month or two.

I've looked for CKLW for years, and I doubt I'll ever be able to receive them. We have too much on 800 out west. CKOR, CHAB, KPDQ. Not much else behind all of them either. WJR is an occasional visitor in winter.
