I wonder if the CEs are 'DX-test-friendly'? I'd love it if they would DX test before they cease operations. KDWN is a regular here at night and ceasing operations will make WGN much easier on the west coast.

Amazing. It wasn't too long ago that KDWN dropped to 50 kW to 15 kW (I think) on the notion that it was covering desert more than people with the extra wattage. Now I think it's 7.5 kW at night.

Would this make WGN the clearest of the clear-channel stations? It appears aside from three stations under 1,000 watts, there's only KOTZ in western Alaska with 10 kW also on 720 in North America.

Another one bites the dust, as they say. On the bright side, a DX test would be amazing, and WGN should make it out farther now with a clearer signal.
 
The transmitter for 760 KDFD Thornton/Denver seems to be permanently stuck on the 50kw daytime pattern, even well into the night. It's been like this for weeks, and the signal barely moves a blip in strength (save for some skywave interference). As a result, the signal is local strength in my area, and hopefully a good chunk of this region will be able to benefit from a strong skywave signal.

You should definitely have some time to grab this one, Midwesterners and West Coasters, because they seem to be in no hurry to "fix" anything.

As a DXer out here in San Diego, this is wonderful news and makes me thing that WGN might be doable on a semi regular basis with no more KDWN. No co-channel interference from 710 or 730 and the 740 IBOC hash from KBRT is far enough away at night to where WGN should be in the clear once again. Can’t wait to test it out next month!

Not in Laramie...

KWWN 1100 was a semi regular visitor before sunset ,and sometimes very well
KNIH 970 visited occasionally.
KENT 1540 is a recent sign on (last 4 years) and once it came on, it was a regular visitor at sunrise.

Just my opinion, but to be brutally frank, I doubt that KYW (or almost anyone else) cares about what might be going on with WHFB. They've stayed on day power at night in the past, then stopped doing it, and now evidently they've started up again. I've pretty much come to the opinion that some operators.....a minority, to be sure....take the approach of "as long as we can get away with it, why not do it?". We're living in an age where the owners of big signal flamethrowers, who theoretically are affected by the "cheaters", are more concerned about promoting their brands with the frequency of their FM full signal, translater, HD subchannel or whatever.

WHFB did operate with more night power than authorized but that was not under the control of Engineering.. But it can now be reported the WHFB goes totally dark at night with power at ZERO. program continues at 102.5 FX
 
Les Rayburn says they (CPC) have reached out to the Chief Engineer and will let the IRCA board know if any type of DX test can be arranged. A double DX test would be awesome as I've never (!!) heard KXST-1140 from here, only 775 miles away.

As a CPC member, i had a conversation with Les last night..... while a test is not entirely out of the question for KXST 1140, it doesnt seem very likely.... we're kinda ugnning for 720 and we may only get a 10 minute test out of 720.

Can you also arrange for WGN to be off the air for those 10 minutes?

Thanks for clearing that up, Larry, and welcome to the board.

To be clear on my end, over the last few years, I've come around to the opinion that. in most cases, AM stations operating at night with higher than authorized power usually isn't all that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things. Until and/or unless someone complains and can demonstrate harm. that's not to say carte blanche should be given, And obviously feeding a translator is a better solution.
 
Impressive daytime DX today!! A rare weekday off from subbing (couldn't find any jobs...I can see why, teachers WANT to be there for Valentine's Day parties)

770 KATL Miles City MT (704 mi) way under KTTH with Fergie 'Big Girls Don't Cry' // stream
550 KBOW Butte MT (385 mi) with Northern Ag Report, noon farm report and local ads
680 KKGR East Helena MT (412 mi) The Bangles Manic Monday mixed with weak KOMW
890 CJDC Dawson Creek BC (634 mi) very weak country music

The top half of the AM band after 1000-1100khz seems to be relatively normal. This opening is down low on the dial.
 
A pal of mine who moved to California sent me an untelescoped KDWN air check, from back when they programmed Standards for a while.
A KDWN DX test would be fine. I've not heard Nevada in either 'career' DX location of Queens NYC or here in NEPA.
 
KRSV-1210 Afton WY is in with Wyoming Cowboys basketball. Mixed, and now fading to, KHKR Washington UT with ESPN. Southerly conditions tonight, but more semi-Au than expected. 1060 CKMX is often in the jumble and in/out with unid Spanish and English music stations.
