Post your latest DX

Tonight I caught KBLA out of Santa Monica for the first time. Reception was pretty bad, but I was able to hear the ID at least a few times.

As for other regulars, for some reason, I'm not hearing them. KTNN, KYNO, even KFI, gone. Clearly the skywave conditions aren't favoring those so well.

On the other hand, propagation for SW seems particularly good tonight; I'm hearing both WWV and WWVH at the same time on 10 MHz very clearly. Even when conditions seem good, 10 MHz doesn't come in very well at my location.

Checking for TP (Trans-Pacific) DX this morning and it was pretty weak 200 mi inland from the ocean...only noting 774 JOUB and 747 JOIB this morning. But there was a (very) likely KYUK-640 Bethel AK with NPR News, and no ID. KFI barely noted underneath. Gone now. Will check tomorrow...this is one of my most-wanted.
Sounded like KFQD was also there, but buried under KXTG and KERR.

Id count 640 as KYUK. If I waited for an ID, i wouldnt have 60-70 percent of my logs

I'm getting huge mess on 1270 in Vallejo on my XHDATA D-109

KVMI is fading, I think I also hear KGAY in the mess as well as KTFI Twin Falls, ID

KTFI matches the stream

Operatic music on 657 this morning, so Pyongyang Broadcasting, aka Kim Jong Un's 1.5MW powerhouse, making it across the Pacific today.
Very weak KBHB 810 Sturgis SD under KGO. Also heard 1210 KRPU Rocklin CA just after 7AM. Tried for Alaska on 640, but the co-channel to KFI was too weak.

Mixed bag for me this past week or so. Both at home and four nights on the road. I'll elaborate more later if I get the chance. But what jumps out for me is that a few one-time "clear" channels have been sounding more like grqveyard channels. 640, 800, 1070, and 1130 come to mind. A little strange given the trend of an increasing number of AMs are becoming silent.

Then there's the matter of local WIND now with something underneath it...NIGHTLY. This used to happen only occasionalloy. Still haven't been able to ID the intruder, But KWTO is "most likely suspect".

CBS Sports on 810 this morning a little after 4AM CDT. In and out for about ten minutes mixing with WGY. No ID heard. KGO and WJJQ (Tomahawk. WI) appear to be the only stations that fit. C Crane Skywave aimed NNE and SSE, which would tend to null both KGO and WGY. So I'll guess, WJJQ on 940 watts non-directional day power (versus 28 watt night power). If indeed its WJJQ, it's a new catch. Tomahawk is in the Wisconsin northwoods, about 250 miles north of me. Popular summer resort town.

Hearing 1400 KRPL Moscow ID and KXGF Great Falls MT with HSFB. No sign of my most-wanted, KODI Cody WY, been looking for them since I moved to Yakima with no trace.
1410 is KIIX Fort Collins CO, 1KW, Billy Currington and ID "KIX AM 1410". Relog, but it's more common now that CFTE is defunct.

and now KNND 1400 Cottage Grove OR with local ad for western store and HSFB. Hey, isn't Paul Walker voicetracking on that station?

1450 KGRZ Missoula "GRIZ 92.7 and 1450 KGRZ"
1400 KART Jerome ID classic country // stream they are NOT doing HSFB tonight
1230 KORT Grangeville ID 218 mi. 'Rock Steady' The Whispers // stream

Now I have KCBL-1340 Fresno CA, 679 mi, with Fresno State Football vs. Utah State (the only 1340 for both teams is KCBL), not heard in a while...and ESNE Radio 'KPYV' Oroville CA, 490 mi.

The most distant station I've heard yet on my C Crane Skywave.

ShortwaveSchedule.com showed this as the only current broadcast at the time on that frequency and it was China Radio International from Kashi Saibagh at 7,190 miles broadcasting in the language of Tamil.

From eastern Iowa — Mexico and Canada tonight.
CBK 540 Watrous, Saskatchewan — used to hear this a lot but hasn’t been audible for a while
CBKF-1 Gravelbourg, SK
XEABC 760 Mexico City — good to hear since it is only 10kW at night and WJR almost always dominates
CKLQ 880 Brandon, MB
CKBI 900 Prince Albert, SK
CJGX 940 Yorkton, SK
XEEP 1060 Mexico City
I think I’ve heard most of these before, but it’s been a while.

Nice! Gee that radio looks familiar.

I'm very happy with mine, and would enthusiastically recommend it to anyone in the market for a good small portable under $100. I haven't used it for SW, but probably should. However, I did check out R. Rebelde once on the tropical band one afternoon the last time I was at the beach near Pensacola. It sounded like it was coming from across the street!

There is an annular eclipse today stretching from Oregon down into NV, UT, NM, and TX before going into the Gulf. I am hearing KNX-1070 Los Angeles buried under an enhanced CFAX Victoria at 8:42AM PT, 10/14. Maximum obscuration of the sun is at 9:21AM over central/southern Oregon, approximately 90% totality, we are about 80%. Checking other channels as we get closer.

Those of you back east will be much closer to the path of the total eclipse on April 8th, 2024. Coming out of Mexico, it goes through TX (totality at Dallas as well), northern AR, southern MO, IL, over Indianapolis, significant parts of Ohio, western NY and into the New England region. I am not sure if I will be able to DX remotely or (if I'm completely insane), visit the Ozarks in-person to experience it.

Noting KRPU-1210 Rocklin CA weakly over something else in English (Utah?), heard during the 'Great American Eclipse' in August 2017 as well. We were at 95% totality for that one and 100% was just a 2 hr. drive away to Shaniko, OR. Oh well.
KIFM-1320 Sacramento at S5 with ESPN, CHMB Vancouver weakly under. KRKK-1360 Rock Springs WY '1360krkk.com' 8:53AM PT.
I wonder how much of this is lingering skywave, and how much is eclipse-enhanced. I remember in August 2017, the signals weren't really strong until 10-15 min. before strongest totality.

500-watt KJAY 1430 Sacramento is very strong at 9:02AM with Hmong music. It's about as strong as the 1-5KW Sacramento AMs. Very impressed. KMHS-1420 Coos Bay with a massive signal as well, they pass through max. totality in about 20 min. This is a country/classic country station still operated by the local high school and runs 1KW days.
KEJB 1480 Eureka very strong, 1600 KUBA Yuba City mostly alone. Interesting how this path is giving me northern Californians and not so much Oregon.
9:12AM - KMZQ 670 in Las Vegas is chewing up KBOI. KOFI-1180, which was very weak at 8:45, is now S9 at 9:13 with the late Jimmy Buffett.

919AM - Eclipse nearly at maximum crossing southern OR. 1300 a jumble with KDSO OR mostly on top. 1260 KKOO Weiser ID "101.5 KOOL FM" big signal.

922AM - Now over south central OR. KSL-1160 is in. 1440 KVON Napa, 1460 KCNR Shasta CA, 1360 sounds like KFIV Modesto with a Purity Products infomercial.

925AM - KSL now up to S7. KIHU-1010 has joined them at S7. KOUU-1290 Pocatello, tons more and still plenty of CA enhancement as it passes through the NV/UT region.
1330 was KYOZ Spokane and now is KLBS Los Banos CA at 930AM.

Enhancement towards east is ending as eclipse is maximum over the Four Corners region of NM. 1570 is just a weak wisp, it was Lodi CA the past 30 mins. I heard Korean on 1650 20 min. ago - so that's the furthest log of the eclipse, KFOX Torrance CA. Also a 1410 with Christian talk likely KERI Bakersfield.

BTW, I did NOT notice anything out of the ordinary on the FM dial. No tropo enhancement or interesting receptions.

Oh, you have to check out shortwave!

Where you are, you could easily get stations from Europe and South America and probably parts of Asia.

The lower part of the band is best at night and the upper part of the band is better in the daytime.

And then there's WWV, the time station, which broadcasts from Fort Collins Colorado and it's sister station WWVH on the same frequencies which broadcasts from Kauai.

The frequencies are 5,000, 10,000, and 15,000.

You know you are hearing the one from Colorado if you hear a man's voice giving the time at the top of each minute and if you hear a woman's voice, it's the one from Hawaii and sometimes you can hear both at the same time.

I've easily heard the one from Hawaii at night from Florida when I had my Grundig G8.

Once you start listening to shortwave, it's like eating popcorn and you want more.

Here's where you go to ID what you are hearing on a given frequency at a given time.
You have to scroll down to get into the shortwave broadcasts.

Thanks, gar. I used to like to hang out on 49 meters at night. upper bands by day, and 31 meters anytime. I also liked the tropical band at night. (es peially in Pensacola). Radios were my Grundig Yacht Boy 300 and Realistic DX 375. Both of them now long gone.

When I was in Honolulu for my Junior year of high school, I had a Halicrafters S-120. Depending on conditions and what time of day it was, I could often hear WWV under WWVH. When I got back home, it would be revrsed and I'd sometimes hear WWVH under WWV. Also when I was in Hawaii, I'd hear lots of California hams on 15 and 20 meters during daytime.

@cyberdad
I lived in a basement apartment in NE Philly for a few years either side of 1990 and DXed off a Lafayette HA600a. The link should show it -- the picts with the blue dial.
Over time, I'd grown dissatsified with the impreciseness of its dials and made my own for it, with wee bits of coloured tape ribbons.
Having spent so much time on its AM dial for a few years back in Queens NYC, I generally knew my way around its wonky frequency determination to know where I was .... on 1440, 1460 -- things like that. And wow, did that radio COOK for both selectivity and sensitivity on AM. So I left the AM face alone.
Instead I found myself re-doing the short WAVE dials on it and filling entire looseleaf books with stuff logged on those same 31, 41-49 meter bands. Great fun it was, maybe a couple hundred new catches. I suppose the best 'catches' were with it getting daylight out the basement windows, on 9655, 9760 and 9580, from Radio Australia. As if it was like hearing WBZ or WHAS. And there was frequent MUSIC on the SW dial back then.
Intoxicating stuff. Thanks for the memories!

These things cost $109 brand new back then.
