Big signals tonight from WY and nearby areas. 1210 KHAT Laramie like a ton of bricks S9+10, New Country 96.7.
KSJB-600 Jamestown ND and NO sign of CJWW in Saskatchewan 😲 Sugarland // stream, ID. This is rare! 5KW, 1033 mi.
Fair signal from WGN 720, easy now that KDWN is gone. KFIR back to 184 watt night power finally after months of laziness...like leaving the 10KW on all night.

edit: add 910 KCJB Minot ND, 5KW 906 mi to that count...not new but rare. Tim McGraw // stream

919AM - Eclipse nearly at maximum crossing southern OR. 1300 a jumble with KDSO OR mostly on top. 1260 KKOO Weiser ID "101.5 KOOL FM" big signal.

922AM - Now over south central OR. KSL-1160 is in. 1440 KVON Napa, 1460 KCNR Shasta CA, 1360 sounds like KFIV Modesto with a Purity Products infomercial.

925AM - KSL now up to S7. KIHU-1010 has joined them at S7. KOUU-1290 Pocatello, tons more and still plenty of CA enhancement as it passes through the NV/UT region.
1330 was KYOZ Spokane and now is KLBS Los Banos CA at 930AM.

Enhancement towards east is ending as eclipse is maximum over the Four Corners region of NM. 1570 is just a weak wisp, it was Lodi CA the past 30 mins. I heard Korean on 1650 20 min. ago - so that's the furthest log of the eclipse, KFOX Torrance CA. Also a 1410 with Christian talk likely KERI Bakersfield.

BTW, I did NOT notice anything out of the ordinary on the FM dial. No tropo enhancement or interesting receptions.
Nothing at all in East Tennessee. Much different story during the Great American Eclipse in 2017, in the path of totality (which also went over WSM and WLAC's towers). We'll be in Mena, Arkansas for the one in April 2024. I'll have to learn the normal dial quickly.

I did a lot of shortwave listening before work got really busy and took up so much time just before so many services faded away. BBC nightly, often Radio Australia late at night - including its ABC domestic relay and on Friday night, its sportscast with live Australian football and horse racing. Cuba for unintentional comedy.

In 1972, caught the last three games of the Canada-Soviet hockey series live from Moscow, two on Radio Canada International carrying the CBC call of Bob Cole, and the final period of the final game, as RCI couldn’t be found, via Radio Moscow. I didn’t know the language but it was easy to pick out the names and that roaring Canadian crowd.

Good stuff.

KSJB has an interesting figure 8 pattern fulltime. Nulls to the NW and SE. It trips a car radio scan button in Winnipeg. If you're hearing it in Washington state, my guess is that you're just far enough from the deep part of the lobe. Either that or they're running non-directional.

@crainbebo KHAT will soon be a daytimer. Theyve filed to cease night operation.

The AM sounds like crap, and no ones listening to it

Ooh...perhaps this might be the one thing I need to finally pick up WPHT. Or KOKK in Huron SD.

There is an annular eclipse today stretching from Oregon down into NV, UT, NM, and TX before going into the Gulf. I am hearing KNX-1070 Los Angeles buried under an enhanced CFAX Victoria at 8:42AM PT, 10/14. Maximum obscuration of the sun is at 9:21AM over central/southern Oregon, approximately 90% totality, we are about 80%. Checking other channels as we get closer.

Those of you back east will be much closer to the path of the total eclipse on April 8th, 2024. Coming out of Mexico, it goes through TX (totality at Dallas as well), northern AR, southern MO, IL, over Indianapolis, significant parts of Ohio, western NY and into the New England region. I am not sure if I will be able to DX remotely or (if I'm completely insane), visit the Ozarks in-person to experience it.

I traveled to Junction, TX (110 miles NW of San Antonio), to view the eclipse on Saturday. The total annularity started there at 11:48 CT and lasted about four and a half minutes.

During the event I was going back and forth between helping with photography (especially at the peak) and scanning the dial using a Sangean HDR-16 portable and Terk passive loop antenna. I found that reception conditions were similar to the mild enhancement at the beginning of sunset.

I first noticed an improvement in conditions around At 11:30, with a weak 1530 KZNX in Creedmoor (135 miles away) coming up with regional Mexican music and a "La Raza" ID. At the peak of the eclipse, I noticed that San Antonio stations 1480 KCHL and 1310 KAHL were both weakly audible (110 miles away).

At 12:08, 1580 KWED in Seguin (133 miles away) was noticeably stronger than its normally faint daytime signal in Junction. After that I heard 1560 KGOW In Bellaire (274 miles away) come up very briefly with Vietnamese talk. Also, 1110 KVTT in Mineral Wells (200 miles away) appeared playing Hindi music with a weak but listenable signal. At 12:17 I heard a weak 1620 WTAW (218 miles away) in College Station for a bit before conditions went back to normal.

I had only experienced partial eclipses in the past, so I thought it would be a bit darker outside than it actually got (and with more ionospheric enhancement) during the total annularity. Fortunately I will get to experience the full deal in April since the total eclipse will be happening in San Antonio and some nearby towns.

I had another new log on Saturday night...this one I *thought* I had before but I couldn't find it in the logs.

1460 - KION CA, Monterey; with ID "PowerTalk 101-1 and 1460" at 2006 PT 10/14. Good signal over KCNR. NEW #832, 10KW at 681 miles.

At today's sunrise (10/16), I'm noting KSLL-1080 Price UT with country music // stream, also a very weak KJOL-620 Grand Junction CO with 'Child of Love' We the Kingdom // stream, 5KW at nearly 800 miles, rare relog.

New! At my home location. CJCL (ex CKEY) 590 from Toronto. "590 The Fan" with CBS overnight sports talk with Amy Lawrence and ads for lor Toronto and Canadian Businesses. Around 3:40AM with a fair signal, but on top for about 10:15 minutes before fading. Radio was C Crane skywave.

I never thought I'd hear this one at where I am. 50kw, DA-1, but very tight pattern aimed north. I can vouch from experience, that you lose it fairly quickly when you travel east or west of the city. Even more quickly if you're south of Lake Ontario.

Conditions were very good this morning, so I'm not sure why CJCL made it into the Chicago. But if you've never snagged this one, but if something's up with them and their tight pattern, you might want to see if you can catch them.

Happy Hunting!

Update CJCL was in again a couple of hours before dawn this morning with a solid signal. So I'm now guessing that "something's up" with them, Definitely seems to be a good time to try for it.

And there they are at 9:49 p.m. CT on this Wednesday, carrying the Blue Jays game. New for me on 590 (the calls were previously on 1430, there ex-CKFH). Has to be a wonky pattern, to use a Canadian word. Thanks for the tip!

I don't get to do this too often, but....

Picked up 960 KNDN Farmington, NM in Denver between 9:35 and 9:45 pm Mountain time; verified by comparing it against the station's online stream. Announcements in the Diné (Navajo) language along with country music. Managed to get it despite being adjacent to local 950 KKSE. Licensed for 163 watts at night; 5 kW daytime. Receiver was Tecsun PL-320 with 3.5 kHz bandwidth setting.

Heard CJCL last night as well around 9:30 pm CDT with Sportsnet mentions. Not new but not heard in a long time. Thanks for the tip cyberdad.

DFW Texas -- Sangean ATS-909X portable

Caught a new station last night, 10/18/2023 9:15pm CDT.

1140 WQBA Miami, FL: FIU Panthers football in English. Double OT finish. Weak but readable with periodic long fades in null of semi-local KHFX Cleburne TX (Spanish religion). Post game announcements in Spanish, mentioning Miami. Confirmed on web WQBA is now flagship for FIU games. Interesting that WQBA pattern does not send signal my way.

The RL map doesn't LOOK all that "wonky". But just driving through the area can lead you to believe otherwise. After all, they're using NINE towers (near Hamilton). I don't remember CKFH on 1430, but I think the 1430 in the Toronto changes call letters about as often as some people change socks. it seems to be brokered these days.

...and you guys are welcome for the heads-up, Glad y'all are hearing it! :)

Big signals from KXEL, KSTP and CJOB tonight. But WBBM is hardly audible under KKOH, did get an ID.
KKTS-1580 Evansville WY good on peaks with pop music. Perhaps...1KW left on? Weak WCKY 1530 Cincinnati under KFBK.

KLOC 1390 Turlock/Modesto, CA Heard quite well tonight with several Radio Catolica mentions between 645 and 715pm AK

2280 miles

Wonky as in something’s wrong with it at the moment, I mean.

CKFH was famous for being put on the air by hockey announcer Foster Hewitt (the FH in the call) to carry all Maple Leafs games. He owned and ran the station for decades, building an empire that included part-ownership in CFTO-TV and the CTV Network before selling in 1980. It became CJCL in 1981.
