Post your latest DX

When your two hobbies combine.. Shortwave DXing and jingles! VOA still uses jingles and music beds, from the TM Century WMAL Package. This is about the clearest recording you'll hear of this that isn't a studio master copy.... it was recorded off 9800khz via Thailand with an ERP of 25 Megawatts with me right in the main lobe 5000 miles away.

Audio:

Sitting on the Stevensville MT SDR this early morning, and here's the interesting DX I've found:

1570 KBCV Hollister MO w/ In Touch over and under KCVR
1560 KGOW Houston, Vietnamese talk over KVAN WA
690 tentative XEN Mexico City, Spanish music way under XEWW/CBKF-1 and sounds like it is matching. I guess CBU Vancouver doesn't have any lobe towards the east, because I can't find them at all.
Loud WGN-720 Chicago all alone (1320 mi.) and strong
530 Radio Enciclopedia in Cuba, weak but audible.
1630 KCJJ Iowa City IA 'The Mighty 1630' with KFBU WY faded down

So this is a fun one yesterday evening I had a brief FM Sporadic-E opening in March to Chihuahua, Mexico...

Had 93.3 XHBW and 94.1 XHHES. Both around 1085 Miles and both relogs. Also likely had 89.3 XHFA but couldn't confirm it. Around same distance.

This time I've done March FMBC Sporadic-E. Statistically it seems like the least likely month for to happen.

FRi 1/5

1290 KGVO Missoula, MT 606pm AK with weather forecast. Quickly lost to 1290s from San Jose and Chico.

1180 KOFI Kalispell, MT with Rich Valdez Show at 621pm AK

Sat 1/6
910 KNEW San Francisco with several Black Information Network mentions, 540pm AK. Pretty well on top for a bit

1510 KGA Spokane with sports talk at 552pm AK

1290 KGVO with local commercial at 557pm AK

1270 KVMI Tulare, CA with My 97.5 liner, pretty good signal for a minute or two at 614pm AK

1360 KOHU Hermiston, OR with classic country including Kenny Rogers at 618pm AK, with KKMO broadcasting dead air.

Sun 1/7
1200 WOAI San Antonio with legal ID at 559pm AK. Pretty good signal!

1540 KXEL Waterloo, IA screaming in

1080 KRLD Dallas "And Im Bob Delgiorno, 1080 KRLD news" after traffic and weather report, 606pm AK

1620 Rebelde Cuba hjeard spanish music that sounded somewhat obviously like what Cuba normally broadcasts and this is the only spanish 1620 in this neck of the world, 624pm AK Time.

1560 KGOW Bellaire, TX way over top of KNZR Bakersfield, CA for several mintues with Vietnamese talk. Even a casual vietnamese speaker would've understood what was being said, 652pm AK Tikme

870 WWL New Orleans. This was soooo clear and strong I was ready to pass this off as KFLD in Washinghton State, also a news talker with Westwood One Network Sunday night NFL. But Murphy didnt work against me.. I got a loud and clear WWL Station ID along with the Cuban Wobbler plainly obvious under it. 659pm AK

XERDO 1060 Matamoros, Tamaulipas, near Brownsville TX. 7pm I almost passed this up thinking it was KTNS Fresno, CA that I heard just the day before. I don't speak any spanish and understand only the very basics, but I heard "La Raza" mentioned in the way a slogan would be mentioned then what was clearly an X Call letter being mentioend and the typical mexico station id thats so long, I joe the station ID's everything including the location of the kitchen sink. Heard again even better nearly 53 minutes later with a man talking.

KSTP 1500 St Paul, MN heard with Good signal and local ads at 716pm and mention of "Skor north".

KRRZ 1390 Minot, ND at 719pm. Usually heard is KLOC Turlock, CA or KLTX Los Angeles but the dead giveaway this was a d eep midwestern state was the weather forecast with a current temp of 7 degrees! Kinda weak and soon lost.

KLGN 1390 Logan, UT 725pm AK with mention of FM Frequency 106 point something and 1390, "The Fan". The only other sports station on 1390 is in WA and has a translator on 104 something.

950 KCAP Helena, MT with mentions of News Radio 95", a full power FM and the AM frequency. 732pm AK with decent signal.

1040 WHO Des Moines, IA screaming in for the moment.

1110 KRPA oak Harbor, WA overpowering local KAGV Houston with punjabi music at 755pm.

580 CHAH Vancouver, BC heard with south asian punjbai music, only station on this frequency in north america with this format.

Radio Reloj 950khz, 811pm. Heard with several time pips, akin to WWV/H, but for the moment thats all I heard from Cuba on 950 under a jumble of 3 other stations on 950. I may have heard some bits of spanish words, but I know I clearly heard time pips.
Sounds like a good haul of stations.

Am assuming these are rare, not normal, catches.

What's nighttime AM reception typically like in your part of Alaska?
How many stations typically come in at night?

From north suburban Chicago: Listened in to 850 again today around local sunset, 4:30 PM. This time I heard WQRM from Duluth, MN. What a great callsign! 😄 Almost didn't believe my ears when I heard it. They were broadcasting an episode of "Unshackled", the long running radio drama. Signal was pretty good until 4:45 PM when the frequency became a jumble of signals, but then KFUO rose to the top by 5:00 PM. They often seem to play some nice music in this time slot... listening to some church organ music right now.
That show is aired nationally, for years. A religious drama, almost like an old-time radio drama, from Pacific Gardens or similar, a downtown Chicago mission helping the homeless.
The program is dramatizations of a person's salvation, leaving years of alcoholism, drug abuse or homelessness, etc. Well done.

Nice Catch

Also, can stop being tech saying FMBC, Everyone here knows it's FM Skip

how many stations come in at night is a big variable.

Some of the higher powered signals in my log visit from time to time, but i wouldnt call them regular..... but arent often that good

KTEL 1490 Walla Wall, WA made the 1852 mile trip to McGrath, Alaska with local commercials on Wed. Feb 14th at 706pm AK/806pm Pacific.... it took a few plays to catch that the ad for the passport business is for a business called "the postal annex" and the hours she mentions in the ad match whats on their website

Here's my audio:

KYNR 1490 Toppenish, WA which is 1775 miles away showed up just 2 minutes before KTEL with some native pow wow type chanting.. it's hard to hear, but it's there.

Audio:

TEF6686 radio, 15 ft wellbrook loop and DXEngineering preamp

Equis E Erre Efe's Amplitud modulada signal on 1570 was quite loud here in McGrath, alaska 3335 miles away a few weeks ago.

Here they are Feb 14th at 701pm AK 1001pm Central with a song than a station ID at 35 seconds into the recording. Audio:
XERF 1570 Ciudad Acuna, Coahuila, Mexico 701pm AK Time 1001pm central Wed Feb 14, 2024.mp3

Here they are about 28 minutes later with a REAL LOUD, clear fade up of some music then female chatter. Audio:
XERF 1570 Ciudad Acuna, Coahuila, Mexico 729pm AK Time 1029pm central Wed Feb 14, 2024.mp3

TEF6686 radio, 15 ft wellbrook loop and DXEngineering Preamp

WSCR Chicago under KBOI 670 tonight in eastern WA. Amy Lawrence After Hours. I think I am hearing the same thing on 1700 faintly, so KBGG Des Moines (a relog). A little bit of WBBM - but no WGN. Only a faint whisper from KFIR on 720.
KNFL Fargo w/ ESPN on 740 mixed with KCBS.
KATL Miles City dominating 770 when pointed towards them, KKOB otherwise dominating to the SE.
On 980, it's "Gold Hits, KDSJ 980 and 103.5" from Deadwood SD...a rare relog from WA. It is SO nice to have KTCR off the air for all these weeks and months.
Semi-local KDYM dominating 1230, but just heard "Kootenai River Valley" and "KLCB" underneath them. Libby MT for a relog. I drove through that town last April! 1KW, 267 miles. KLCB is country music while sister station KTNY-101.7 is soft AC and I swear, runs on exciter power, probably just a few watts.

They have a CP to leave 87.9 and go to 88.1 from what I remember.

Tonight, I have CKBX 100 Mile House BC dominating 840 when KXNT is nulled out. // stream, 'Water' Brad Paisley
870 has CKIR Invermere BC under KFLD, 'Bounce 106-3'
CFAM 950's classical music floating through KJR and likely KCAP when pointed east, but it's quite weak.

Early this a.m, around 6:10 a.m. Pacific Daylight Time, KMZT Los Angeles with maybe 20 minutes of classical music. It was // to the stream, too. Pretty cool to hear. Usually it's KLYC's Hot AC / classic hits mix or KKOO Boise's oldies / classic hits / old R&B mix during that hour. Seattle area, Sangean PR-D5, some aid with an AN200 external loop. Station #611.

I was listening to the SDR out at Pt Reys Nat'l Seashore, and underneath a mostly absent KSFB, I heard classical music. Since classical is something no other AM station plays, I reasoned that it must've been KMZT.

I can't get it on an actual radio anywhere near my location, however, since KSFB is too strong.

CHNL 610 Kamloops, BC
Heard at 904pm AK 3 15 24 with a canadian accented news anchor followed by a radio nl dot com mention Signal very weak and mushy, didnt last long.

TEF6686, 15 ft wellbrook loop and dxengineering preamp

You probably dropped your 909X or bumped it.. get a gum wrapper thats silverish and some tin foil by the battery coils.. and see if that helps.

I have never used the whip, i use my 15 ft wellbrook loop, @crainbebo
Hey Paul, finally tried doing what you asked me to do. The batteries got really hot and the screen did not turn on. I think it needs more than just tinfoil :-(
Might talk with the folks at Batteries Plus later this afternoon, otherwise I have no radio until I buy a TEF-6686.

Weird, it worked for me. I would just buy a TEF6686....... the audio is better for one thing, the 909X audio is kinda muddy and wishy washy
