Due to record flooding in western Washington, KRKO-1380 and KKXA-1520 are off the air.
KOKC 1520 OKC is dominating at S9+5 with Red Eye Radio. This is over 1,400 miles from Yakima. 1-2 others buried underneath are probably night power KGDD OR and KVEN CA.
Meanwhile, 1380 has relatively solid KOTA Rapid City and probably KTKZ Sacramento, plus several others buried. Sounds like George Noory is buried in the pileup (not KOTA), maybe Port Huron MI?
At 2313, KVSM Santa Maria CA noted with Regional Mexican // stream, 500 watts under KOTA.

Unless WPHM 1380 was on nondirectional STA, I doubt that was WPHM. Could be. My late friend was the Engineer there for a while, and they frequently had problems with the pattern and were operating with 2500 watts. They have seven towers, 6 in a parallelogram Day, 4 towers in a line Night, three towers in common Day and Night.

NEW Meteor scatter log this morning:

103.9 CJAW Moose Jaw, SK; with part of an ad ending with .ca, "You're listening to Mix 103"... then fadeout. At 9:15AM PT, a few miles away from home at a local trailhead. NEW #906, 100KW at 760 miles.
Also heard multiple Spokane FMs, KISC-98.1, KBBD-103.9, KEYF-101.1, etc. some with RDS.

Geminids have reached their peak. 120+ / hour at times overnight. That's more per hour than the Perseids in August.

I drive from Cape Canaveral to Miami a lot going south on I-95 and often I can get both WSKY and WFLC on 97.3 FM! Google maps is showing 120 miles and 180 miles respectively and that's quit impressive! I think this is possible because there's little to no co or adjacent interference and also I want to thank WPCV for not broadcasting HD allowing that to happens.

I heard BBC Radio 5 Live on 900 kHz yesterday. Unremarkable, except that this network only broadcasts on 693 kHz and 909 kHz. Someone, somewhere at some AM transmitter site has whacked a button and knocked a 909 kHz transmitter off frequency by 9 kHz. Bizarre.

It isn't a receiver image, as it is on precisely 900, and multiple people have heard the same thing in different locations around northern England and Scotland for about 3-4 days. Various different KiwiSDRs in the region have it. 900 is allocated to Italy and not the UK, although it hasn't been in use by Italy for years.

And Im sure you know, and i seem to think.. that an AM transmitter being 9khz off and not sounding like moose dung is not easy to do. Meaning, I've heard stations far off frequency but they end up sounding awful for a number of reason. It's hard even for frequency agile FM transmitters to be moved a few channels... you have to press multiple things.

This thing has gone now, apparently it went quiet a few hours ago and has presumably joined its friends back on 909 kHz, but while it was on it sounded like the standard BBC 5 Live transmission in terms of audio quality.

Radio Voz Missionaria in Brazil once started drifting very slowly over the days from 9665 all the way up to 9673 a few summers ago.

Their 11750 outlet? One night was drifting back and forth from 11748 to 11757 in a manner of 30 seconds over and over again all night.. it ended up on 11755 and stayed there for months till it moved back to 11755.

None of this was ever announced or mentioned on FB

A yearly PSA for Christmas programming. Many 50KW stations put away conservative talk on Christmas Eve into Christmas Day, and air various Christmas programs, including Mannheim Steamroller's An American Christmas. There are also Canadian holiday shows that air in place of talk programming on a lot of stations. One of the best times of the year for listening to AM radio. I usually spin the dials for a few hours late on 12/24 myself.
Chip Davis' program is excellent. Lots of stories and tidbits about the holiday, including the Christmas truce, fruitcake, and poinsettias, mixed with great holiday music from Mannheim Steamroller and other artists as well.

local WYLL was off air overnight after 10:30 pm CT (2230 UTC) so there quite a few to catch!

FIRST NEW AM LOG IN YAKIMA SINCE DECEMBER 25TH, 2023!!

840 - KMPH CA, Modesto; with Relevant Radio's Christmas music and hymns // 1010 KIHU, 1050 KJPG, 1400 KIHH, under Mark Levin on KMAX Colfax, at 1555-58 PT 12/24. This is the first new log on the AM band since 12/25/23 when I picked up another Californian, 1060 KTNS. NEW #838, 5KW at 613 miles. This has escaped me year after year (even in strong aurora), given KXNT's presence at night and their night pattern pointed away from me.

Maybe another Christmas gift on the way tonight? A good sign is what I'm hearing on 1600. Can't find KVRI and instead it's KEPN Denver with ESPN, plus 2-3 others including Christmas crooners (probably KUBA).

From Dec. 1 - 5, I the wife and I stayed at St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands - my first time in the Caribbean. I took along my Kaito KA1103 for AM and LW DXing as well as my tiny Sony SRF-T615. I’ve finally gone through all the recordings I made there.

My first impression on the AM band was that there are a lot more stations in Puerto Rico than I realized. From home in San Antonio, I’ve only logged one from that area, 1660 WGIT.

I logged six new countries on AM: Grenada (1400 Harbour Light of the Windwards), British Virgin Islands (780 ZBVI), St. Kitts & Nevis (860 VON), St. Maarten (1300 PJD2), Dominican Republic (Christian stations on 540, 660, 750, 1200, and 1680), and Venezuela (830 YVLT Radio Sensación).

I also logged five stations from Colombia, including Radio Nacional de Colombia (570 and 680), W Radio (700), La FM (980), and Radiónica (550).

I’d hoped to log my first Brazilian on AM, but no dice. For a while I thought I had Brazil on 980, but it turned out to be Haitian Creole talk and music from WTPA in Pompano Beach, FL.

I logged one other station from FL (920 WDMC) as well as 1140 WRVA and 790 WNIS in VA, 570 WMCA in NY, and 720 WGN in Chicago (at 2,131 miles).

My longest catches were my two locals - 1200 WOAI (2,232 miles - airing the Cowboys vs. Lions game) and 680 KKYX (2,273 miles - playing classic country songs that matched the stream and playlist).

Surprisingly, the LW band was disappointing. I brought my Greek 8” tunable ferrite rod to use with the Kaito in hopes of logging some new NDBs and possibly a European or African LW station.

However, the only thing I ever heard was the DDP NDB in San Juan, which was booming in on 391 kHz. Despite the saltwater path and a sensitive radio/antenna combo, I heard nothing on the rest of the band.

Back to DXing.
Buried way under KPQ-560 is Christmas music. I just matched this with KLZ Denver CO. That's a very rare catch. Helps that SF is gone!
KSJB-600 Jamestown ND at times equaling CKSP.
Red Eye Radio on 630 is likely KHOW Denver
680 CJOB solid under KNBR with The Waitresses' "Christmas Wrapping"...and there may be a third station buried
690 CBKF-1 and 860 CBKF-2 // both in, 690 is strongest
KULE-730 Ephrata overwhelming signal with SS religion, must be day power
1210 CFYM Kindersley SK dominant, West Central Online mentions. Also hearing KGYN OK
1060 KDYL South Salt Lake TOH ID.
1390 KENN Farmington NM, KLGN Logan UT, and probably KLTX Long Beach CA with SS religion, all under KBBO Yakima's open carrier which has been going on for several weeks (I need to get Stephens Media on this...it's 24/7 dead air)
1360 KFNC CO strong with Alex Jones over likely KRKK WY with Christmas music.

Back in around 1979, I received KNBR "68" barefoot on my Sony Supersensitive (FM) AM FM Radio Cassette in Mecosta County, MI. I called KNBR while taping it. He announced my name and where I was listening, after the call. You could barely make it out, but it was there. I taped many of them off air, only some where I was on the air. Ron O'Brien (KFI), host unknown (KNBR), JP McCarthy (WJR) call in on air, quotable historical information, but not taped, spontaneous call), Norm Nathan (WBZ), spontaneous call, in response to being on 10 kW AUX during a power failure, but taped I think, not sure. Wally Kennedy (WSB), on air, taped call, John Landecker (WLS) I stumped the old dude, (answer "No Good To Cry"-Wildweeds) may have taped, not sure, Tom Kent (WLS), not taped, not on air, good conversation, Jack Stockton (WCFL) I was on air, and taped. Discussed the number of towers, he said three, Engineer Chuck Lee raised 4 fingers. Sent over phone to record and equalize a few years later, used at Chuck Lee's retirement party.

Sadly, most of these hosts have passed on, including Tom Kent. Tom Kent revealed the other meaning for the call letters WLS, "World's Last Station", during the call. It was the first time I heard that moniker.

My wife called a contest on WJR and won, the answer was "Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo". Art Vuolo heard the call and called us, and retrieved the 15/16" IPS log tape with the call on it and edited it for us. Won a prize. She also won a CD from WCSX from Doug Podell, some obscure Led Zeppelin trivia question.

That's impressive. I logged KNX here in SE Michigan back in January 2021. Extremely weak, and was only accomplished using my Wellbrook loop and an Icom general coverage receiver, along with a preselector/preamp. To date its the only west coast signal heard at my location. Couldn't imagine receiving anything from that distance on a portable as you did. Folks say DXing was easier back then when the band wasn't as crowded and there were fewer man-made noise sources in our environment. Either way I'm impressed. Very nice.
