Post Your Wish For 2007 Radio in N.O.

No flaming now...these are just honest feelings and wishes of the post'ers in this thread, so behave yourselves!

Mine is that WRNO waters down the ratings of the pompous bunch at WWL just enough to bring about much needed changes on 870 in the New Year. Maybe in ownership too?

What's your wish for the New Year?

i hope diva 92.3 changes monikers and goes hotter, aiming for b97. hot, mix, power, or star would be nice! a sweet jingle package to turn up the energy. (something new orleans radio lacks---an energetic chr)

that way it will bring some much needed changes to the boring staff and programming at b.

I agree with Chandler that WWL needed a wake up and hopefully 99.5 is that wake up call... Get it back in fighting shape of a few years ago.. They have some good people, but WWL has been going lax espcially in the fact we don't need a rewind on radio (most other stations do it on the net)

Ok here is my wishes for NOLA radio.

Citadel is slowly wising up on rocking country and has gotten rid of the classic rock, and is adding the same music it swears it wouldn't in the beginning. So my wish for 106.7 in 2007 is to change image again... and go after the new country market that WNOE is dominating.... But do it with a New Orleans flair... (as WNOE has ingrained itself as the country station in the market with relating to the market as a New Orleans station IMO more than a station that happens to be in New Orleans)

We all would wish WDVW would flip back to WCKW playing classics and new rock and wipe out WKBU and KYRK but that ain't gonna happen anytime soon... DVW needs to loose the weird format that everyone else is trying and go Hot A/C or even Adult Alternative..Neither market has this kind of station.... A real wish would be for 106.1 to take one of the formats, 92.3 takes the other and John Mcqueen shown what real people wanna hear in NOLA.

KYRK needs to add more new rock..geez... I like 90's alternative, but If I brought in CC station WUSW from Hattiesburg, I think it would kick 104's (*$$) playing a mix of mainly new rock but going back into the 1970s
Hell CC's other Rocker in the state KTUX plays more new rock than 104.1

Tweaks at others basically....

Oh and kind of in market, out of market but 94.9 flip from Religious to Classic Country upon building their new tower in Lafourche Parish and increasing power.

where to start??

1. 92.3 to active rock as rock 92.3
2. 94.9 to classic country as rfla already suggested.
3. 95.7 needs a new morning show!! and it needs to widen that really really shallow 100 song classic rock song
rotation!
4. god please change b97! its been dead since 1994!
5. 104.1 needs to flip again. stale alternative classic rock is just as dull as stale 70s classic rock!
6. 106.1 needs to change completely to rock 1061.--dowdy does rock better than anyone!
7. rockin country needs to die! change it to AAA as 1067 the wave. (tulane green wave )

well there you have it my 2007 wish list ;D

Dowdy has nothing to do with 106.1 anymore from what I know.. It's completely Citadel... Dowdy took over 94.7/94.9 at the time he lost the LMA on 106.1

Also rumor from H-town is W & J may be off a few stations in Texas and one in Louisiana come March... (But another says they add a North Louisiana market in 2007)

My wishes for New Orleans/regional radio may not be much, but what the heck.
I wish I could laugh again like I did when Athena Matsikas was on in the afternoons with her partner Duncan at 105.3Fm (they were let go in January 2005 when that station got W&J and needed A&D's salary to help pay for W&J). I enjoyed that show because Athena at least to the time to respond to most listeners, which is exceptional in today's day and time.
One wish has come true in the sense of all the locally-based talk choices, including Shane Warner at WIST-AM 690.
And finally, maybe...maybe in 2007 all my friends in the Thibodaux/Houma/South Louisiana area will get KTIB-AM 640 back on in one form or another. Grand ole station, who knows!
Take care.

I agree. Even though I like WDVW, maybe its time for them to go Rhythmic Top 40, but keep the Dance stuff.

I would agree with most about 92.3, but my list is this:
1) WJSH 104.7 to pickup the now defunct KNOU 104.5 so they can simulcast to reach both the south shore and SE-LA
2) KTIB- for the leagle mud slining to end and to go back on the air(anything but religous programing
3) WBOK-AM 1230 Somebody do something useful with it
4) 104.1- Really happy when it switched( doing Snoopy Dance and all) but does need to add more current rock(I think they are using the old KKND music libarary when CC owned It.

Here's another wish:
THE RETURN OF JAY HOOKS TO NEW ORLEANS RADIO......
The reason W&J are doing so poorly-THEY DON'T HAVE HOOKS.......
Hooks is the reason why the W&J Show was saved...

I never have understood why these owners (and many PDs) don’t think outside their narrow box of formats (well maybe I do). AAA occasionally gets mention and that would be my preferred format of choice if done well, not sure the large corporate suits and their consultants could do a very good job of it as a startup.

Take KGSR in Austin, they do well, but they have a good PD (Jody Denberg) who was left alone by Emmis since it is successful when Emmis bought the group containing KGSR from Ladybird Johnson. The music still matters and they still have live jocks hand-playing CDs day and night! I believe KGSR and/or the AAA format done well most represents what evolved AOR/Rock radio would be if it hadn’t gotten frozen in time and turned into a robot like what happened to WRNO and many other classic rock stations.

Why can’t there be stations in this area like KGSR? Does it take a unique leader/PD? Is it only possible in a place like Austin? Or, is it just the short-sighted suits that can’t think past the next quarter that prevent it from happening?

http://kgsr.com another good one: http://kpig.com

Both of the above stations have a healthy internet audience, how many current NO stations would be of any interest to anyone outside the city? My guess would be WWOZ for the unique music and culture, and maybe WWL when something’s happening. Everyone else is essentially cookie-cutter.

Buttonpuncher Hate to tell you this but WWOZ is going semi Automated. There are putting the libaray on computer to go with a new digital board. The programers will still be there, but how it will affect some of the shows will remain to be seen, especially those of us who still do it the old fashioned way and spin records :-\

Is this still a go? I heard the problem was storage space for the CDs and part of the library is stored at LPB in BR. Last I heard the hard-drive project was off, or at least a stand-still.

Is there a problem filling all of the shifts that's driving this change?

The Harddrive project is still a go. The "Temporary" studios in the french market building does not have enough room for the libarary unlike the old kitchen house in Armstrong park. The theory is to have the entire libarary ready to play at the programers click of the mouse, and the logs are automaticly generated to be sent to BMI, etc. How the programers who spin vinyl will change their shows remain to be seen, sincemost of what we play is from our private collections and are mostly rare recordings. There was talk of moving the station to UNO and share WWNO's studios, but I think the they want to keep 'OZ in or near the French Quater. A perfect place would have been at 529 Beneville ( the old WNOE building) But it was sold in the early 90's and became an apartment/condo. If 'OZ stays in the French Market building, goes back to Armstrong park( waiting for the park service to decide to rewire and rebuild the park, or moves to a new building of its own remains to be seen.

Excellent ideas! I loved reading them (probably because it's too painful for me to try to dream up good changes for New Orleans radio that I have little faith will happen). I wish - REALLY WISH! that even just a couple of your list of 7 could happen. Who knows? Maybe we'll get really lucky someday - wish it'd be before the end of time though. Thanks for the wonderful dream - don't wake me up!!!!! Oh & Happy New Year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!well there you have it my 2007 wish list ;D
