Potential Catch of CBW Tonight in Phoenix

I was turning around the dial today down here in Phoenix, AZ doing some armchair DXing with my Portable Sony Liv Radio and got reception of a mysterious station on 990 AM broadcasting a British News format. Usually down here in Phoenix, we get some unidentified Mexican station broadcasting a music format that sometimes airs English-language tunes, but tonight was different with this station airing British News. It didn't appear to be the BBC because there was no typical BBC identification, but they were talking about news stories in Africa, Russia and so on. This was followed during the 2:00 A.M. MST hour with what appeared to be Australian news talking about flooding in Thailand. I could tell the station was coming from far away because it had that typical low tone and fade outs of distant stations.

My first guess was something NPR related with the British news, but when I heard Australian news I knew that could not be it. After doing some on-line searching, I think that it could have been CBW from Winnipeg, Canada airing the CBC Radio One format. I do recall hearing something about the CBC toward the top of the hour, but the station was barely audible at that point. As usually seems to be the case for DXers trying to ID a station, the station faded during the critical moment of the TOH ID and when it came back strong, it was already on Australian news. I'm hoping that it's CBW because I've never logged the station before down here in Phoenix and it has been coming in quite strong at times tonight. Does CBW air British and Australian news during the overnight hours? Any help IDing is appreciated!

Probably.

If I'm doing my time conversion right, 2am MST = 4am CDT. According to http://www.cbc.ca/programguide/program/connect_asia, "Connect Asia" from Radio Australia airs on CBC Winnipeg at this hour. Before 2am MST, the BBC's "Outlook" would have been on. They air a CBC ID and area weather at the top of the hour.

IMHO, the BBC doesn't ID nearly as often as it used to.

Especially compared to some US AM stations. For example, it seems like WBBM mentions their call letters at least 100 times an hour.

"Branding" is important, I know, but ID'ing that often can get tiresome to listeners once they have tuned to WBBM.

I had good conditions last night as well. WBBM 780 was in, KFAB was strong from ~1350 mi, KID 590 (not regular) in the mix of KQNT/KUGN, and KOHI 1600 St. Helens, OR at sunset (haven't heard in two years!)

Are you able to null KKOH when going after WBBM?

Yes I can null KKOH to some extent to get your local 50kwer, radioman148.

Good job! When I've been out west in recent years all I hear on 780 KKOH. A few times in the past in Southern Cal I heard the 780 in Sedona, Az.

WBBM is not in every night, but most of the time I can get a weak WBBM. I also have gotten WGN-720 and WLS-890, and WJR-760.

Again--good work. With KDWN on 720 WGN can't be easy.
Way back in the 60s & 70s when those frequencies were clear all four Chicago clears covered the west coast almost every night.
Sadly those days are long gone.

I get WJR sometimes beneath KFMB in Northwest Washington. But they REALLY come in over the Cascade mountains.......

I once picked up WBBM-FM on a ridge near Vantage, WA........

CBW is a regular here, often muscling over CKNW 980 and KOMO 1000 like 98 watt weaklings.......

WJR is winter only-only heard it once in Feb. 2010. Never heard it in Yakima, but I think I had KKZN-CO there...
WBBM FM was likely 2x E-skip, what month was this and what year?
Yeah, CBW is common here. Sometimes at sunset in the winter time I'll get KATD-CA, and heard KTHH-OR's 250w day power once at sunset as well.

The WBBM-FM catch happened in August 2001.

There was one strange AC radio station on 990 kHz I picked up occasionally in Lynnwood in the mid '80s which I never got an ID on that actually used part of Toto's "99" - as a jingle! ("Oh 99/I love you....")

???

Wasn't CBW, that much was certain. I heard it might have been a Utah station, but I'm not sure.....

Most likely the former KKIS 990 Pittsburg, CA-now KATD with Spanish News/Talk...
