Potter Leaving KRMG; Cox's Lawrie Moves

Dan Potter is leaving as News Director and Assistant Program Director at KRMG at the end of August.

Staff have been told the official line is that Potter is leaving for 'personal reasons' and is returning to Dallas, TX to pursue interests outside of broadcasting. But others at KRMG will tell you he's leaving for various reasons ranging from (1) a "power struggle" over wanting a larger role on the morning show over that of host Joe Kelley and (2) issues related to policy and direction.

Potter is still on the job, but will be leaving at the end of August. A search for a replacement has reportedly begun. No current KRMG News staffer is being considered for Potter's permanent replacement, sources report. Potter has been at KRMG for a little less than two years.

Also leaving the hallowed halls of Cox Radio...VP/Marketing Manager Dan Lawrie who's taking a similar role with the Cox Media Group in San Antonio, TX. Lawrie has been overseeing the Cox Tulsa radio group since 2003.

Wow, Ed are you clueless. But, you did make me giggle. A "power struggle?" "Issues related to policy and direction?" Where did you come up with that crap? I've looked over your previous posts. You obviously have an ax to grind with KRMG. Well, I'm not going to help you sharpen it.

For the record, I am leaving my fulltime position with Cox Radio when my contract expires at the end of August to return to DFW strictly for family reasons. Those who know me, know the circumstances compelling me to return. They also know its not due to any of the ambiguous reasons you posted. Were it not for the family issues involved, I would gladly renew my contract at KRMG with no reservations or pre-conditions. I've worked for Disney/ABC, Cap Cities, Cumulus, Clear Channel and others. Cox is (by far) the best broadcasting company I've worked for. I've known Joe Kelley since he and I worked together at WBAP. He's a great host and Joe, Rick Couri and I have enjoyed a phenomenal relationship....on and off-air.

What you don't know is that I'm remaining with KRMG on a part time basis, to start a weekend food and wine show called "OK Foodie." It debuts Saturday June 19th at 1:00pm. The show will feature Tulsa-area chefs and cookbook authors and will be taped in front of a live audience at the new Sage Culinary Studio in Bixby. Which means I'll be in Tulsa several times a month and will continue to work closely with my friends at KRMG. I may also be called on to help with vacation fill-in, when its practical for the station and for me. And, I'm helping with the search for my replacement. Hardly the scenario that could be possible if I was leaving in the midst of a power struggle or a fight over policy and direction.

Oh, and the part about "no current KRMG news staffer is being considered for Potter's replacement" is also not true.

But, then, the truth isn't really what interests you, is it, Richard Ed?

Bitter much?

Dan Potter

I'm only aware of two power struggles between Dan Potter and me:

1. Who gets to set the temperature on the air conditioner unit in the Talk Studio (I win that one)
2. Who gets to eat annoyingly loud radishes and celery in the post-show meeting (regrettably, Dan wins that one.)

I have known Dan for years (he and I worked together at WBAP/Dallas) and eagerly recommended him for this job. I'm sorry to see him go. He will be hard to replace. We would like to find his identical match, frankly. (Except we'd like him to have a complete distaste for loud food items.)

To Dan and Joe. I use to live in Dallas and think both of you do a great job!!. Dan I loved it when you were doing news in the morning and Joe, I listened to you on the Midnight Trucking Show. I live in Northwest Arkansas and pick up both stations, WBAP and KRMG. Dan I wish you the best of luck. It would be cool if you did fill in at WBAP while you are in Texas. Best of luck to both of you.
