Poughkeepsie/Newburgh Ratings

Alright people...lets all repeat after one another...12+ numbers DON'T MATTER!!! Here's the real deal...

- WPDH is THE real deal...They were #1 in most demos/dayparts in Poughkeepsie. Newburgh was a little off but still did well. This has to do with K&M and the music. Station sounds good...It's currently the "crown jewel" of Cumulus...

- The rest of Cumulus? WOW! Can it get worse? WRRV/WRRB and Mix 97 are both down. And Cumulus's attempt at a country station, WKXP, is reaching the bottom of the pit. And when you extrapolate the demos and dayparts...Yankees baseball is what is saving them! It's time to flip the switch on Kicks and send them to radio oblivion. What else could they flip too? All Sports? How about Urban AC??

- Clear Channel had a down book 12+, but broken down numbers look good. Kiss did favorably well in it's key demos...WRWD did well in it's key demos, and even picked up some decent 18-34's. The Lite network needs to replace the light bulb, because it's flickering on and off.

- Pamal is Pamal. K104 is it's usual self...WHUD had a surprise Poughkeepsie book, not a great Newburgh book.

- WGNY!?!? WGNY?!?! Hey Arbitron, I know you read this board. Can I see those diaries?? Because they is NO chance that WGNY could jump from all the way up to what they did!!! They are horrible!

Anyways here you go...

Station most likely to flip: WKXP Kicks 94.3...Time to pull the plug!!! Can I hear some Tom Joyner please? Maybe ESPN Radio?!?!

Station most likely to rebound: WRWD and Mix 97. There is ALOT of buzz on the streets about how WRWD is sounding lately, and if Kicks flips that would send some listeners to WRWD. Star 93.3 had a good book, but it won't last. I see Mix benefiting from a drop off from Star

WPDH is just the king of Hudson Valley radio at this time.

Perhaps all sports or maybe a simulcast of Mix 97.

I don't think that will happen.

Plus, Mix 97 beat WHUD last book, but it looks like WHUD is doing better now.

At first, they were sounding good and organized, but they seem to keep falling back in the abyss. They plays LOTS of the 60s and 70s music and not much 90s or now music and some of the songs they play just don't fit. JLO? Come on WGNY.

Arbitron is Cooked

If anyone out there really believes that Arbitron is able to accurately develop real radio ratings and predict listening patterns, you may be a candidate for buying the Brooklyn Bridge.

Arbitron ratings lack the accuracy, broad sampling and predictability that are necessary to have any meaning. Do you really think that anyone is going to take the time to fill out those stupid books correctly? Give me a break. How many of you listen to just one station when you are in the car? Can you accurately say how many minutes you listen to each station?

The only values of Arbitron are the inflation of ad prices and the control of salaries by station management. The best indication that Arbitron sucks is the Pendell Road tar pits ... everything that Benfer and Turnip try produces the same mediocre ratings regardless of how crappy it is. Maybe if Arbitron still developed ratings by JOCKS rather than call letters, we might have something of value (yeah, I know, stations provide Arbitron with their jock's names, but everyone is too busy flipping the dials when the jocks talk ... and therefore who knows what they were really listening to by the time they get home to do the book?).

This inane commitment to an outmoded rating system is juvenile.
