Poughkeepsie news

News 12 Hudson Valley covered the Poughkeepsie mall parking garage collapse as well as a few of the NYC Stations like CH 7 which sent a reporter there yesterday. I thought that news 12 Hudson Valley does not cover dutchess County as far as I could remember they do not cover Dutchess County news.I know it is not seen there but I do not know why they covered it. they covered it by sending a crew and it's chopper there to cover it. News 12 Hudson Valley covers Rockland and orange County. What is the point on News 12 HV covering a story no one is going to see in that county or town?

PS, did any Albany tv station cover it by any chance? how did they cover it if they did?

Even if people in Poughkeepsie can't see News 12 HV... the Poughkeepsie Galleria is a "major" enough location that many people in Orange County have probably been there. Even if they haven't been there, chances are good most people are at least aware of the mall's presence, and it's still an interesting story with good pictures. I even saw it running in Syracuse.

Thank goodness this wasn't a fatal (last I heard anything on it) ... but if it were, you can imagine this story would have been all the more "prominent" on many more stations that aren't seen in Poughkeepsie.

I guess another way to put it is that sometimes, a story is big enough to cover even if it's not directly inside your own market. I'll use Syracuse as an example. If that parking deck collapsed at the Galleria's sister mall, the Carousel Center, you can bet stations from the surrounding markets (Binghamton, Utica, perhaps Rochester) would cover it because it's such a major regional landmark and people from all 3 areas routinely visit the mall.

Likewise, if there were a disaster at the Palisades Mall... News 12 HV would definitely cover it. But I'm sure some of the local cable news operations further north and on the east side of the river would also cover it, because many of their viewers probably have made the drive down to shop there.
