Poughkeepsie Spring Book '08 - What's Good, What's Bad

As you probably know, today is the Spring Arbitron ratings period for Poughkeepsie, let see what the numbers are between what's good and what's bad. Let's find out!

The good part of this ratings period is that WRWD is still #1 in the books for the second time in a row since the fall book, still beating "The Wolf" on the other hand, except for the Yankee games on the sports side. Last weekend, they had the All-Star game carried by ESPN Radio, but "The Wolf" sometimes carried the World Series from ESPN Radio every once in a while if the Yanks go to the World Series or if the loses, they will not be carrying the World Series from ESPN Radio on "The Wolf". I don't see any format changes from "The Wolf" by years end if they should flip to ESPN Radio to carry "Mike & Mike", "Dan Patrick" and a few others including generic sports games on ESPN Radio, will see what happens in the future if maybe they can speculated whether "The Wolf" continues to do poorly in the Fall book by January of 2009.

K-104 beats "Kiss-FM" in the ratings, WSPK is top 40 CHR and "Kiss-FM" is more like a KTU/Pulse 87/Hot 97/Power 105-ish kinda station and K-104 is doing well doing CHR, good job!

"Lite-FM" on 92.1 is doing okay, competing with WHUD and WZCX, all three of the AC stations are competitors, don't see any changes, except the one on 98.5 isn't showing on the Arbs, but it's a great station, more like "Fresh" which is on 102.7 in New York City doing much of the same and then throw a batch of 70's and 80's songs that CBS-FM plays now, but "Lite-FM" at 98.5 is a great station with my favorite Bob & Sheri, I like them better that Stern & O&A which I said this many times before. B&S are much cleaner than those two nasty shock jocks doing inappropriate stuff on the air. Give them credit, I listened to it on their podcast as well. there is a podcast where you can listen to B&S, it's available via RSS feed.

To get back to the ratings, WKIP is climbing up with the arrival of Don Imus from WABC which is now carrying his show on the station. Last week, Mark Simone from the WABC's "Saturday Night Oldies Show" is filling in Imus, because he was on vacation or something and it was heard on WKIP, no comment on other shows as well.

And now for the bad ratings in the Spring book and I just mentioned it a lot of times on these posts, WBPM is still up in the ratings after this terrible mess from the Fall book, the "Music Blimp" sounds good on Saturday night with Randy Turnip playing some New Wave 80's songs and a few early 90's stuff on there, good show and it has been on for 6 or 7 months since it started back in October, I started posting airchecks from that show from off the air and off of the stream. But the rest of the station, come on! Can't you play the right songs, look at CBS-FM, they just pick the right songs for this station, CBS-FM does not play songs by Aerosmith, the Cars, Van Halen, Def Leppard, ZZ Top and a few artists that does not play this wrong songs, WBPM also pick the songs that are mediocre and took it the wrong way. Some of them are rock, just like the one you hear on WPDH.

This is just the big ratings issue with this format, and as for one thing, what's wrong with the lists of stations and formats according to the Arbitron, it says "WRWD/WRWD-AM" listed there, also "WCZX/WZAD" also listed and WBPM as listed as Clear Channel instead of Pamal and the format "Oldies" instead of "Classic Hits". What wrong with that? Clear Channel sold the station back in February of 2007 where the station flipped the format to "Classic Hits 92.9" and it took the station in the wrong direction. I guess "Classic Hits 92.9" should morph into "Classic Rock 92.9" in the future to compete with WPDH and WDST.

Where is the oldies station in the Poughkeepsie? There is still no oldies station in the HV listening area, not right away but now we're stuck with WZCR's "Cruisin' 93.5" north of the HV area doesn't show up in the Arbs.

I don't see oldies or greatest hits station coming to the Hudson Valley anytime soon, I listened to WGNY-AM and it doesn't come out well in Kingston, it is an oldies station in Newburgh, if not, I'll be working on doing my podcast playing the oldies that everybody remembers the 50's through 80's right up to now. I might look forward to this very soon.

Any thoughts.

my thoughts [EDIT] are that Pamal had an outstanding books across the board. There must have been some celebrating going on in fishkill.

BPM is up significantly, A25-54 in Dutchess we're talking #3 behind PDH and K104. K104 #1 in Orange, #2 in Dutchess 12+ and the Adult demos look even better. HUD is big time in Westchester/Rockland/Putnam and not too shabby in Dutchess and Orange.

For the disaster that is The COOP and TOBIN Show, the numbers look good. I think it's more statement on how crappy the rest of the morning shows are rather than something special PDH is doing.

What the heck happened to RNQ? In fact the whole CC cluster seems to be in the crapper. I guess zero spending on marketing, research and promotions can affect ratings. Voice tracking most shifts out of AMD can't help either.

[EDIT-inflammatory]

watch the flaming, steve!!!

now, if i were beth, brandi and buzz, i would get those resumes polished! nothing personal against them - they are great people, but i can not imagine that chuck would continue to support such a failure of a station. makes him look bad in atlanta. but, then again, atlanta's running their own failure!

keep up the great work, randy! great to see the numbers are up in potown for wbpm. just wish we could see the ulster numbers.

k104 never ceases to amaze me - up big time, and #1 in newburgh / middletown - go figure!!!

nice to see 'dst up a little, too!

K104 and WHUD are most likely the two best stations in the HV and it shows in the ratings. The Clear Channel stations sound extremely sloppy and crap. Nights and weekends are mostly voice track. The DJs on the air sound very boring as well.

thanks for the comment. The CC Joker clusters where he programs the HV stations are crap, can Batman and Robin stop this thing before the format changes take place, or should the PPM system is coming to the Hudson Valley while New York City are getting their PPM's set for the fall? Or if the CC Joker HV stations can go HD, except WPDH already had one? Or finally, are they are going oldies to program Scott Shannon's "True Oldies Channel"? Tune in next episode, same bat time, same bat channel!

this is sad

while people (esp. <35) replace radio with other options, people here want to have p***ing contests and fight over a shrinking pile of scraps. no wonder radio's a mess.

wamc excepted maybe.

Except for WRWD clear channel stations took a bit of a hit. Outside our market WLTW New York fell to third place there could this be because of Clear Channels cost cutting , awaiting privatization, which will be completed soon?
Their biggest problem is WBWZ , which had a 4.5 2 years ago has been in a decline since and now it’s ratings have fallen off a cliff . Of course we don’t know the all important demographics but in the 12+ they are in a virtual tie with rim shot ,much improved in the ratings WBPM. Perhaps WBPM’s improvement came at WBWZ’s expense. I am a bit surprised at the improvement WKIP showed in spring book after their flip to news talk . Two of WKIP’s top shows Imus And Rush Limbaugh are available on WABC which also did well as the top rated out of market station. It doesn’t bode well for the several stations including WBWZ and WKXP that finished behind several out of market stations . Unless the demographics show something we don’t know perhaps we could see some changes at WBWZ . Would it be a tweak or something totally different ? As far as WKXP is concerned ,Cumulus showed some commitment to country when they changed calls with the format flip , something they didn’t do with WCZX ,but enough already ! This dismal excuse for a country station has been steadily loosing listeners and remains near the bottom of the local stations list , beating only the handful of people that listen to little old WHVW . It’s time for a change Chuck !

I hope that one of the Lite-FM stations like WCTW and WRNQ should tweak its format a bit and add some current stuff like WLTW plays like "You're My Angel" by Shaggy, "Hips Don't Lie" by Shakira, "How to Save a Life" by Fray, "Bubbly" by Colbie Caillat and a few others. Look at WLTW's playlist for example at yes.com

http://www.yes.com/#WLTW

Is the CC Joker of the Hudson Valley would be the target for cost cutting to let these people go soon? It might happen, time will tell! Batman and Robin is waiting for you!

Or will all of these stations can go HD. Stay tuned!
