Power 100.1 - Athens

Latest is that the advertisers they did have by and large opted OUT after the flip.

Can't Cox afford to do a little market research, FIRST, with an eye toward refinement if possible as opposed to an about face flip?

Wait, what am I saying... they bought one of those fancy format spin the wheel deals that CC uses.

They is infallible, ya knows.

Better'n a crystal ball and such.

They'll have no problem finding advertisers - CHR is right now an easy sell, and with Athens being a college town you can bet there will be advertisers lining up to have their commercials aired on Power.

The facts are there are about 115,000 people living in Athens, and about 200,000 in its metro area. 40,000 students study in Athens, the majority of them are obviously not originally from Athens. The city itself is over 25 percent black, and learly 7 percent Hispanic, and on top of that over 30 percent oh the city's population is between the ages of 18-24.
Let's also add to the fact that Cox CHR/Pop and CHR/Rhythm stations tend to perform well. This is a company that knows how to acheive ratings with Contemporary formats, and how to sell the format.

So yeah, a Rhythmic friendly CHR/Pop station serving Athens sounds like a very good idea.

Latest from who, exactly? Or did you just make this up because you're not happy about the flip?

Personally, I don't have any investment in the flip one way or the other - not emotionally, nor otherwise.

As far as who... I was in the biz for decades and know a good half dozen people in the two buildings Cox maintains in Athens, alone.

No disrespect from me, but you're not talking with a youthful mark who fancies a rebirth of "CHR" - or, an old fart clinging to his favorite classic rocker.

Simpleton ethnic and age/sex demos does not a ratings and revenue magnet make. They have one heck of a tough row to hoe to win favor in that market with that slant, trust me. Revenue especially. Do some real research and dig into the business owner makeup of the town, their targets, who has the real disposable income... hit the street and meet and greet them - and GOOD LUCK.

Wave whatever flags you like, though, and have fun with it while it lasts.

No flag waving here, Rogue. The fact remains, though, that Bulldog, in whatever incarnation you want to pick over the last few years, wasn't working. The reasons why are beyond my pay grade. Something had to be done, and CHR is the route they chose. It's clear that you disagree with the decision.

What would you have done, if you had the decision to make?

Wow, I realize how mistaken I was before! Let's all hope that Cox and CC make the smart move and make every single station on the air CHR! CHR Good, AAA Bad, CHR Good, AAA Bad.

Totally agreed it was way overdue for significant tweeks...

What would I have done?

Complete re-imaging playing off the city's music heritage and youthful vibe (no matter ones age) with a targeted/unique to the market AAA (for lack of a better term) format that skews money demos for ATHENS... Magic would have to give up some playlist and, ideally, I'd turn Magic straight hot AC with a strong CHR lean afternoon/nights (ironically, where we took it to it's greatest ever heights)...

It's a very unique market, without question.

And, not to rub it in at this point, but it's now abundantly clear that the urban slanted "Power" is a failed also ran in the classic city.

I agree with Rogue, Power 100.1 seems to already be an after thought in Athens. I do hope they keep Kris & Evan on the payroll long enough to realize they screwed up and the station is now making less money than before the flip and decide to bring a rock format back along with the Bulldog name. The other thing which is an outside shot but maybe they can put them on Magic 102.1 in the mornings in a cleaned up version and interact more with listeners. I think enough of their old listeners would seek them out over there.
