Power 102 Jonesboro aircheck from 1990

nice aircheck... This just reminds me that station had not even been running full power for the past 7 or 8 years.

101.9 used to always hold a preset on my radio until they suddenly could no longer be heard till you got over the bridge.

1990 was such a great time to be in radio.

A nice mix of AC & CHR (mostly AC though) in this aircheck which is exactly what the station I worked at during the same time period did. (We were heavily day-parted though. AC days and a gradual transition fully to CHR nights.)

Thanks for posting!

I don't think they kept the Power 102 moniker much longer. I was thinking that that the handle was "Kiss" when I heard this station in 1992. Anybody else remember?

R.I.P 101.9 in Jonesoboro.

If memory serves me, I think Duke Media bought it in 1992 or around that time...it very soon became 101-9 Kiss FM and started it's downhill slide into being another cookie cutter top-40.

I graduated from A-State in '93, and I don't remember it being "Kiss" while I lived in Jonesboro. I remember listening to Power when I was a freshman and sophomore, and had some classes with Zeke...

I think you are correct, Rich...it must of been 94 ...it's really hard for me to remember dates sometimes...I only remember I could only stand working for Duke 7 months and got out.

No, it was in October of 1992 that Larry Duke blew up Power 102 (as you'll hear on the linked MP3) and the station became the ever so lame 101.9 Kiss-FM. The debut of the new format followed my 6:20 am newscast, with Phil Jamison then rolling with the new format.

Fortunately I only had to work there a few months as Kiss-FM before leaving Jonesboro in January 1993.

Given the recent death of the original signal in Jonesboro, I've vowed do a major revision on my web page about KJBR. I'm going to spend a good deal of time in the coming weeks dubbing every old aircheck I've got, along with some that my old PD Dennis Rogers is sending to me. I want to have a good memorial to this interesting station that once had such an incredible signal. I'll put up a posting when it's complete, but it will be a while. Anyone else have any old KJBR airchecks to share?

WOW!!
That brings back memories. Some good, some ... not so good. I used to have a box of old cassette tapes of airchecks, but sadly in all the moves, none of the ones from that era still exist. Althogh I did find a old copy of the Jonesboro Review that had me on the front page, and a 3-4 partial page story. I remember the reporter came up on the night of Jonesboro's graduation, I think it was '91, and he had intended to just stay up there for a bout an hour or so. Needless to say, he damn near stayed the entire night as we were just SLAMMED that night.

I have to say, to this day I miss the old KJBR control room downtown, it was wide open, had everything perfectly placed, and was always impecably clean. Mainly because Dennis Rogers spent any time he wasn't talking taking paper towels to every surface of the room, and daily cleaning of the old cart heads.

WOW, I really, really miss those days.

Zeke, I beg to differ on 'man, I sucked then'...you didn't! You tore up that 7-midnight shift...I remember how the freakin' phones would literally ring non-stop during my Power Lunch and then during your Top 8 at 8 or whatever...I do remember cleaning the damn control room, especially after Jennifer Reed ...she was great on the air...but never cleaned up the control room after her shift...wonder if she's still in Detroit or Philly? Anyway, those were the BEST years of my 35 years plus in radio ...by far! btw: still hear you on ads on the Q ...

I agree with Dennis. You sounded just fine to me. Then again, I was told I sucked for years! If I ever crack the mic again, I'll probably be told the same thing!

It's always fun to listen to those airchecks from when we were pups. I have some of me somewhere - I should probably preserve them for my kids...
