Power 105.3 Morning SHow

So, they just gave up on CHR?
No, Power is doing what a lot of CHRs are doing nationally. They are adding throwbacks in order to retain listeners - especially women - in their late 20s to 50. Younger listeners, and many listeners in their 20s, are not listening to radio anymore. Throwbacks are one tool to keep an audience.

IHeart made the decision to go all music in the mornings when they changed to ‘the New” Power 105.3 and added more throwbacks to the music playlist.
I suppose the thinking was to provide music-intensive mornings against the talk-intensive Bert Show. But I wonder if an automated Power 105.3 is what listeners want in AM drive.

It will be interesting. IMHO: the folks that don't want "talk, DJs or a lot of commercials" are already on Spotify, Apple Music, or whatever music app is popular this month. With 105.3's signal limitations I can only guess that iHeartRadio doesn't feel they sell enough extra commercials to offset the Jubal or other syndicated morning show.

Dunno, 97.1 The River has done great without a morning show.

Does anyone have the breakouts of the morning slows in Atlanta? The AJC one time had something like the rankings but it didn't have the demos or anything.

If 105.3 is going for high school / college listeners, a morning show may not be required. If the average is anything like my son, they don't get up till noon unless they're going to work or school.

Yeah my 2015 Focus only gets terrestrial FM signals. So myself, and many others that live in Gwinnett and Hall Counties won't even get to hear it. I hate that the northern half the market is just cut off from Power in general. And Q is going more and more in a Hot-AC direction. Wow... Radio in this market is SO BAD. Lol

I use to think that iHeart could do CHR well. "Z100" 96.1 in Atlanta changed my mind. Running clips of yesterday's Jubel show was a disaster. Now they are trying CHR on an "urban signal"
I think Power did quite well, at least musically... Especially being in such a weird market like Atlanta. But yeah, morning shows were always an issue with them. When they had Scotty K, Bret and Riley in the mornings (circa, 2015). They were steadily in the Top 5 overall Atlanta ratings. They made the BIGGEST mistake by getting rid of them. Power morning shows all went downhill from there. And, while I realize that there's no comparison between Atlanta and Tampa. I've been streaming 93.3FLZ and that has got to be one of the best, well rounded CHRs around! I only wish a pop station could sound that good.... and do that well here in Atlanta! Perfect balance of hits. They will go from a song like, "A Lot More Free" by Max McNown into "Squabble Up" by Kendrick Lamar. Where as Q will go from, "A Lot More Free" into Ed Sheeran or Teddy Swims. It's like Q always wants to play it super safe and nicey-nice. It's infuriating! Lol

Atlanta's CHR game has been weak since 1992, when Power 99 went bust.

If anything happens to Power, Atlanta radio will end up right back where it was in the 90s with one adult leaning CHR in the market.

Tino Cochino is not a show typically used by CHR/Pop stations, especially in a southeastern market. An unusual choice, just like moving CHR/Pop to 105.3 was an unusual choice. I wonder if another significant change to programming is in the works?

I agree that Power 96.1 in its heyday had a couple different local morning shows that were very good performers. Then, mysteriously, those shows were ripped apart or replaced. Hopefully the inept decision makers who caused Power 96.1's downfall have been relieved of their duties. Power used to be a 3.5 to 4 share radio station routinely.
