Power 106.7 Flip

Heard from several sources today that Power 106.7 is getting ready for a format flip. Also heard they let go of all their airstaff today. Thoughts? I just had to shake my head, had they done it right they could have been more of a threat to the beat.

Then again I did NOT approve of some of the songs on their playlist. Claiming to be #1 for Hip Hop but then turn around and play songs straight off of the pop charts. Having said that I am not surprised.

I will give KBBT props for not buckling under the pressure when faced with direct competition. They pretty much stayed the same as they had been when power came around. Yes the beat could use some tweeks as well but this post isnt about them.

Discuss.

The FCC needs to put a stop to this.. You should have to submit in writing a request to the FCC to change your format and fire on air staff. Then there should be a 90 day waiting period before the FCC can ok it. The airwaves are a public trust. I'm calling Obama...

frequency is jinxed!

i would disagree. power COULD have worked if it was done right. beat was leaning toward a hispanic crowd. which is cool, especially here in san antonio. if power came in and stayed true to HIP HOP and left out crap like black eyed peas or other stuff found on pop radio that did not belong on that station, not edited their songs as much, had more marketable jocks, etc they could have done serious damage.

in my opinion the beat only has valencia, i dont like anyone else. i couldnt say i liked any of the power jocks. a hip hop station DOESNT have to be all yo yo yo what it dew what it dew to sound good. in fact that makes it sound worse. thats just my opinion.

Let's hope not. I can't imagine more conservative talk in this town.

Classic Rock to go against KZEP? Would love to see a Dance leaning format in this market but I know it's highly unlikely.

FM Talk....too funny!!! This will surely become a flop. Austin tried FM Talk a couple of years ago and went no where.

6-9 months tops?

If they do go Talk as Mike has suggested...It surprises me only because we have enough talk in the market now.

FM and Mancow together enough to Kill WOAI and KTSA? hmmmmmm

I think there is room for another music format. Cox is in a bit of a bind here.

Magic is the 25-54 demo As is KONO

Kiss is the 18-34 demo for them and Y100 crosses over both.

They do not want to shoot themselves in the foot like with the Dillo.

I was thinking something to compete against Jack and help Magic.

That smells like Classic Rock to me...but...Perhaps that format is played out with KZEP burning those songs now.

So male appeal 25-54...lends itself to News-Talk. There is some logic there. In reality I believe in this market...

Every format and every demo is up for grabs...since there is very little heat anywhere on the dial at this time.

Radio here is like radio everywhere...safe-complacent and BORING.

Just a few questions:

Im from Houston and whenever im in SA, i listen to Power. I think it's ok. What really happened?? Since when was a radio station with a 2.5 flipable?? Doesn't KSMG have lower ratings than Power?? If so, why doesn't Cox flip that if they had to flip one of their stations??

playlist was godawful.

example...

POWER 106.7 #1 FOR HIP HOP.....

HEEEEEEEEEERES LADY GAGA

Lady Gaga? Black Eyed Peas? Those are just 2 examples of artist that should stay on pop radio and NOT on a Hip Hop station.

I heard a rumor just now that 98.5 has made some imaging to take shots at Power 106.7's demise.

98.5 TURNED OUT THE POWER

or something along that line.

oh that was a bad ass move. if they were going that way, they might as well throw some britney spears in there then ;D

indeed... im sure if she did a duet with TI or slim thug they would have

if Cox ever flipped 106.9 here in Houston to urban (dear god they need to do something better with that station), i hope they don't program it the way they did with Power over there.

KSMG has been up and down between a 2.0 and a 3.0 over the last year. The reason Cox would flip Power instead of Magic is because Magic is a decent 25-54 performer in spite of low 12+ ratings. Its competition has also made recent changes that will likely increase Magic's 25-54 female numbers. Power's competition is nowhere near as inept.

FM Talk is one of the fastest growing formats on radio. It gets 25-54 listeners who won't listen to AM.

However, I can't see this format working all that well. Flipping to talk isn't the issue; it's flipping to bad talk. Good talk works. Bad talk doesn't!
