Power 106/KPWR

How about a classic hits station to compete against krth right now krth is the only game in town. A healthy competition might bring ears to 105.9 they are a full power FM and could get better ads if they do indeed go classic hits

The person he's hired for SVP of Programming has no experience in that format, so I doubt that was what he was hired to do. His background is mostly in Hispanic programming, so that's where I expect him to go.

It's lose-lose...

Classic hits will pull in a HUGE audience... of rapidly aging listeners that ad agencies don't want.

Hip-hop caters to a younger audience... who are abandoning FM entirely.

(Of course, it doesn't help that hip-hop musically has had basically ZERO hits in 5 years).

Splitting a station with the 25-54 shares that KRTH has would result in two stations outside the normal buying depth of agency business which is still the bulk of LA radio revenue.

Pio Ferro's most recent and lengthy experience is with two Hip Hop and Urban stations, not Hispanic. So his experience is definitely with ethnic focused stations... and that is good LA which is over 70% ethnic and first generation immigrants.

I was thinking more in terms of combo buys with KLOS, but your scenario would be very likely ... and take years to rebalance (if that happened at all; look at the KROQ vs. KYSR competition as an example).

But it also occurs to me that the relatively anemic numbers for KDAY/KLLI/KPWR are the result of the three competing for the same listeners. They really need to do something about that or KLOS will be the only revenue-generator in the cluster.

Here's what he had to say about his own experience:

Radio Ink: You have an extremely rich history in Hispanic media programming, and of course now you’ll also be overseeing Cali 93.9. This is a time when Spanish-language radio is really coming into its own as a significant player and causing more conversations in the industry. How do you plan to leverage that growth and the power of LA’s Hispanic audience?

Pio Ferro:
Yeah, the Hispanic population continues to boom. I’ve been doing this now for three decades, two of which were in the Spanish media world. The great thing is that I know the landscape in Southern California and have worked with some amazing Spanish brands out there. Again, it’s about bringing my experience – my battle scars – into the fold and building from there.

Of course, KLLI is an option for mostly Spanish dominant Hispanics, while Power is an English dominant one for not just (although mainly) Hispanics but also Blacks and all others. The one that is principally Black is KDAY which is a weak signal but does serve much of the Black population well.

So really they server 4 rather distinct constituencies and I don't see much sharing in Nielsen.

Well, I hope this new guy can improve on things there. Things have not been rock solid, programming-wise, for a while now.
