dince power 106 has gone down in the ratings do you think they should Revamped the music

Like Adding Pop And dance ETC Like late 80s and early 90s

I used to listen to power from 1988-1992

I Listen fm radio
1984-1988 KIIS FM
1988-1992 Power 106
1992-2005 KIIS FM
Plus i also listen to KGGI FM Now

Jason, first you gave us a list of what you thought the market was lacking, then when that went nowhere you are giving us your opinion that Power needs to change in the same direction you hinted at with your first list.

Are you, by chance, a frustrated programmer who happens to like a genre of music that isn't popular on radio right now?

Re: 20th Anniversary ignored this year?

I take it their ignoring their 20th anniversary since its coming in just days? Haven't heard anything...

I remember 10 years ago they had a tribute to the old sound of Power. They aired old segments from back in the days with all the old jocks and they had a special mix each hour for each year they were on....

I like to see them go back to the "LA's Hottest Music" approach again. It was a mix of everything including some dance an hour. Seeing that their ratings are down, maybe they should. They need to do something because this ship is sinking...

it would be cool if power 106 went back as LA hottest Music playing Hip Hop,Dance And pop

1 Question if they do that will it hurt KIIS FM or kbig fm the most

Back in 1989 when I was listening to KIIS FM I switch to power 106 because they where playing Dance,Pop,RockAnd R&B while kiis fm was oplaying Leaning more with rock

Maybe they are ignoring their 20th anniversary because they don't want to come across as too old. The danger in playing up your heritage, especially on a youth targeted station, is that you could give the perception that you were a hot station in another era, but no longer relevant today. Many of KPWRs listeners were in diapers or not even born yet 20 years ago, they may not be impressed or may even be turned off if they knew the station is older than they are.

As for all the suggestions they add dance. Playing a genre of music that is not popular will not help their ratings rebound, it could actually kill off the station. KPWR has a challenge with KIIS playing more rhythmic and the addition of KXOL. Emmis is a smart company, I think they will find a way to keep POWER one of LAs top stations, I just doubt dance is the answer.

> dince power 106 has gone down in the ratings do you think

while Power is off, it is still the 18-34 leader in LA and #2 in revenu. This pretty much fits the "don't mess with it" category. The fragmentation of any leading station is normal...

Power has a more rhythmic KIIS to deal with, and Latino 96.3 as well. They have survived two major attacks quite well by being consistent.

Power is a mixed ethnicity station. There is very little pop or dance that the Black segment will like, and what they have that appeals to Hispanics is Hip Hop without the urban emphasis that The Beat has.

You can not program a rhythmic station... or an 18-34 station... for non-ethnic listeners alone. LA in 18-34 is 55% Hisanic, 12% Black and 12% Asian. The math does not work.

This is a predominantly 15-34 station. Saying that it is 20 years old makes it seem stale and ancient. If I were them, I would skip the mentions of the anniversary. Very un-kuhl.

Power has been attacked, as stated in another post, by a rhythmic CHR and a reggaetón station in the last 12 months. Still, they are #1 in 18-34 in LA and continue to be the market's second highest biller.

All successful stations get fringe fragmentation attacks. The key is to stay the course and defend the core listener. KPWR is very successful at this, and I expect them to be consistent and not add unpopular music forms, especially dance.

KPWR is hardly sinking. They are one of the healthiest stations in LA.

Re: 20th Anniversary ignored this year?

I'm sure they're just waiting until after the first of the year to start promoting it. They're still in the middle of promoting the 12 days of Mixmas, New Years Eve etc.

I'm sure they will make it VERY CLEAR they've been here 20 years strong. I would also expect to see a HUGE piece about it in R&R (Radio and Records).

I'd be very surprised if they did nothing to mark the 20th - both on Jan 16th and for the rest of the year. If anyone hears anything about it, please post!!!

But then again they will find a way have to aknowledge their roots. After all those 34 year-olds in KPWR's demos were around when the former KMGG became Power 106 on January 11th, 1986.

Forget Power 106 - What About 100.3 The Beat?

The Beat is down to its lowest ratings EVER, and is in the lower 2s in the overall 12+ ratings. Now these kind of ratings might still pull in huge revenue for older skewing formats like Hot A/C, but is the same true for a Hip Hop & R&B station?

I think the beat should flipped because they have low ratings or they should rebrand itself just like KIIS,Kbig,And Star 987 i rather listen to power 106, And KIIS FM InStead of the beat

I havent listen to the beat in 10 years i listen to power 106 And KIIS FM

Jason, you continue to think that you alone are what the local radio stations should use as the yardstick to measure changes.

FYI, in 18-34 The Beat is at about the same level as Jack, Hot 92.3, and Free FM. Not exactly "worry" time for them.

Most of the stations between those four and Power 106, KIIS, and KROQ in 18-34 are Spanish language, BTW.

Interesting to note that in that same demo, Star, KOST, KBIG, KLOS, K-Earth and The Wave are all lower than Jack/Beat/Hot/Free.<P ID="signature">______________

My question is flip to what? KKBT has seen their ratings plummet the last year - but their owner - Radio One targets the African American community - so don't expect that to change any time soon - especially in their biggest market. Expect them to pursue their target audience as they always have.
