Power 108 Aircheck from 1988!

Here's a six-minute aircheck of the old WPHR 107.9 FM back in January of '88, right after they got a new GM in December of '87 and later a new PD and new jocks. It's jockless, but with sweepers and promos too! Click on the link and then play.

I do think that WPHR was at it's best from '88 to '91. It's such a shame because it did have lots of potential to be even bigger in Cleveland.

Better in the late 70s.

Nope, I think it was at it's best in the late 70s when we were WDMT and had the disco format! ;). {Don't think any airchecks exist from that era}

WDMT was cool during its years! Were you working there during its disco stint? What was it like?

Also, I meant WPHR being the best during its period with its format and call letters. '87 was okay, but '92 it was done.

Does anyone have any story behind the switch from WDMT to WPHR? I heard there was a billboard involving a headless man that caused controversy.

Came in towards the end of the disco era

It was a blast. We spun actual 12 inch singles...no carts except for commercials. Beasley Broadcasting owned it at the time. Ratings came in while I was there and they were horrendous, which I couldn't understand because the damn studio phone rang non-stop for people asking for requests [yeah, a station that ACTUALLY took requests!]. Anyways, shortly after the ratings I was let go along with a couple of more people and wasn't long after that that the format was flipped. Never heard about the billboard controversy. Long before it was WDMT, it used to be WNOB. I just heard this about WNOB: Ratings came in for WNOB and they were so bad that the station manager went out back behind the station and killed himself. Supposedly his ghost haunted the station and weird things happened and his ghost was seen a few times. I never saw his ghost, maybe when the station changed the call letters to WDMT his ghost fled the building. As far as the station history goes: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WENZ

I remember the stick to WNOB on Rt 87 in Newbury back in the 70's. I think it was near an intersection, can't remember the north/south street's name. My friend's aunt had a house there, and the stick was literally in her back yard. His aunt has long passed on, and I hear the house is no longer there, the area is "developed" now. Is the stick still there for WENZ? I remember WNOB was 70,000 watts? I also remember 107.9 being WELW-FM for a short while.

The tower when I was there was out back of the station. I remember it well because someone called one night and said the light at the top had quit working so we looked out the back door to see. Yep, wasn't working. Don't remember who it was [engineer, PD, station manager] said they'd give me 50 dollars to climb the tower and change it. I am terrified of heights so I declined the offer in no uncertain terms. Last Google map I checked shows a new tower off to the side of the building, not sure when that went up. Can't even tell if it's taller than the old tower or not. https://maps.google.com/maps?q=41.465,++-81.286944+(WENZ+Transmitter)&t=k&iwloc=A&hl=en

Oh, the street names are Sperry Road and Kinsman Road [rt 87]. First time I went up there I drove by the building twice because I thought it was just a telephone switching building!
