Power 92 Protest Scheduled For July 2

Gary, Indiana radio station Power 92 (WPWX) is expected to be met with a demonstration organized by a local group known as Concerned Citizens Against Violence. They will be setting up outside the Crawford-owned station on Friday afternoon to protest against the lyrics of some of the songs that Power 92 plays, which the anti-crime group deems "offensive," "disrespectful" and "unacceptable."

If you look up Crawford Broadcasting on the internet, you'll see they own about 20 stations. All of them are either religious or conservative talk, except this one. Crawford has owned a Class C FM religious station in Birmingham WDJC for at least 30 years; I believe that's where the chain started. I can't imagine them operating a station that draws the ire of citizens opposed to vulgarity when all their other stations are at the other end of the scale. They even own other stations in the Chicago area that are religious or conservative talk. Strange...

Power 92 was...long ago....WYCA-FM and did carry religious programming for a long time. Then one day they decided that they could fill a gap and compete in the Urban Music format. Evidently they make more money doing just that...otherwise they would still be a religious formatted station.

However...it does shed some light into the companys moral standing. Evidently the need for money is greater than their commitment to Gods word.

They need to take a good look at the music they play and pull out all the garbage that tears people down. It's time to serve the community in a positive way. It can be done and it can still make money.

In the meantime I hope there is a good turnout for the protest ;D

How about a protest against BAD PARENTS . A protest against a radio station is a waste of time ( that button right there is made to turn the channel ).

That's an unfair accusation. Neither you or I know all the details of Crawford's operation. It's likely far more complex than just money. And urban is typically far from the most lucrative format anyway.

Maybe the religious programming they typically air was already being aired by another station or two in the market. Maybe there was an urban hole and felt they could fill the hole and in doing so have an audience they can reach with the Gospel at different times during their broadcast week. There are a lot of possibilities, to simply jump the money cop out.

Perhaps not to the same extreme as Power, but I bet if you pulled a day's worth of music from The Drive we could find lyrics in some of those songs that are not totally pleasing to the LDS either. Is Bonneville selling it's church owner's values for a buck too?

I'm wondering if they're going after the Hammond station because they're not a religious station. I don't know what this protest will do. Crawford will do what they want that's within the FCC rules. I don't know exactly where the protesters will be near the station. The station's building has just a sidewalk separating the building & Calumet Avenue. With this story giving the station a heads up, Crawford might lock up their parking lot behind the building. Anyway, Hammond in bold is actually where the station's physical studios are located at, along with the COL.

isn't there more pressing issues in the world than some stupid music on a radio station? how about protesting BP and unemployment in this country?

Actually I did work for Crawford at 92.3 back in the 80's ...so I know a little more than the average listener about the way it operates. And I have some interesting stories about Don Crawfords visits to the station that nail the "money cop out" down to reality.

Urban may not pull down big money....but it pulls down more than the religious programming they once did. ::)

The group is acting stupid, they need something to do and want some airtime and press to thier cause.. Protests wont do much, do we remember C. Delores Tucker? Do we remember the early 90s with NWA and all the so-called "gangsta rap" cd smashings by church leaders.

This group needs to use their energy in a way that can actually make a difference. How about opening up community centers across the city. How about counseling centers. How about trying to develop better gun control. How about going into the schools and talking to the students to stay in school and choose to do right not wrong.

And why the small station? Go for the "big station" WGCI and the pimps of Clear Channel.

Its just like Jesse Jackson going to Barrington and protesting the gun manufacturing business out there last year. ::)

Anyways 102.3 is Rejoice 102 if you didn't know which holds the original 92.3 Call letters of WYCA. Call letters since 2000 on 92.3 106.3 and 102.3 have been WYCA WYBA WYAA WVJM WSRB WPWX did I miss any? What were the calls of "The Groove?"

I believe they were WYBA during the time they were "The Groove". They moved the WVJM
call letters, for a short time, to 92.3, before changing to WPWX.

By the way, I loved the Groove, I wish they would take Soul 106.3 in that direction.

Yes!! I was hoping that they moved the Groove to 106.3 but as we know they launched it as Soul. Technincally its kinda always had a little bit of a groove feeling, with the Diz mixes.

And I know i have some legal id Power 92 WVJM tapes!

Former mixer/DJ on WGCI back in the 80's and 90's, DJ Edward "Get Down" Crosby, now is on 102.3 WYCA as CEO of the "Prayze Powermix" and spins gospel, house and hip hop. Pretty cool stuff

whoops

The demonstration is set for 4 to 6 p.m. Friday at Power 92, at 6336 Calumet Ave. It's formally known as WPWX-FM (92.3).

I thought Power 92 was slowly morphing into an Urban AC station since they added The Tom Joyner Morning show. I mention this because what's the point of having a protest about Hip-hop songs when the station isn't probably going to be playing them for too much longer anyway?
