Power 96.1 - Atlanta's New Hit Music Station

As much as this market needs a real CHR, I'm not sure Elvis Duran in mornings and Ryan Seacrest will cut it long term. Hopefully at least one of those is temporary.

what was that "catch it tuesday starting at 10am" promo? i caught the end of it.

Another heritage rock station killed to support the bewildering addiction to CHuRban music. Crazy. Disgusting.

I highly doubt, this station will be a "CHurban" It will be a CHR/Top40.

ALL CHR is CHuRban...as urban makes up the majority of CHR now.

What do you mean it isn't going to cut it? A bunch of 9-17 year olds and their moms will be listening to this station and I think really could care less who their DJ is. Would it be nice to have local DJs? Of course it would be.....maybe this is only temporary.

while i really don't disagree with what you're saying -- urban really is the majority of CHR and has been for some time -- mainstream CHR isn't the same thing as CHR/Rhythmic (CHuRban). close, yes. same, no.

i was kind of suprised when wild didn't morph into power 96.1, complete with a simulcast for at least a few days.

but when coke introduced "diet coke," they didn't immediately stop "tab."

They get away with that in Miami and Richmond, but haven't been able to in markets where they're up against major direct competition, such as Charlotte and Greensboro.

I'm surprised it wasn't named Channel or Now, like recent Clear Channel CHRs.

Obviously rigging off of the old Power 99 memories... They have the same format in Miami on the same frequency

I really hope something else will change, just scanning and Star, Q100, Wild and now, no pun intended, Power, all sound exactly alike.

Last song: "Free Bird"

I would have done "Enter Sandman" and "Baba O'Riley". I was not listening: did they play those songs?
"Baba O'Riley" was the first and last song on 96 Rock. Baba O'Riley was also the first song on Rock100.5 after TRG.

I'm okay with having a "true CHR", however that really differs from Q and Star, but I really hate that Wild is going away. Would have preferred to see one of those 2 stations make that move if they felt it was the right move. Not that I'm a huge fan of Wild, but Wild is one of the few stations in Atlanta that plays something really unique and is bringing in decent ratings.

So as is typical of Atlanta radio, eliminate a station with a unique niche that has found a place where with a decent signal and local morning show, they would likely have a mid 4s to 5s ratings. And replace it with a station that will likely sound very much like 2 other existing stations. This is exactly the type of move that has killed Atlanta radio.

Power might end up being a really good station, but even if it is, Star or Q is likely not going to be around long. Or maybe Star moves more AC. But in the end, this move will probably make Atlanta radio even more vanilla than it is now.
