POWER 96.1's SUPER-TIGHT PLAYLIST: SOMETHING'S GOTTA CHANGE....

Something HAS to happen soon. Don't know if their just waiting til WiLD changes or what but, I personally believe that Power is about to shoot itself in the foot. SERIOUSLY, their playlist seems to be getting smaller rather than bigger. They've got to be the only CHR station spinning songs at a rate of over 140 times per week. Look at this from Media Base......

1 1 Up this week JUSTIN BIEBER As Long As You Love Me 142 (spins this week)
3 2 Up this week CHRIS BROWN Don't Wake Me Up 142 (spins this week)
2 3 Up this week MAROON 5 One More Night 141 (spins this week)
4 4 Up this week ELLIE GOULDING Lights 107 (spins this week)
6 5 Up this week TAYLOR SWIFT We Are Never Ever Getting- 102 (spins this week)
5 6 Up this week ALEX CLARE Too Close 101 (spins this week)

I'm also seeing numerous FaceBook comments. And the few few folks that welcomed Power at first are now saying, it's getting old REAL QUICK! I mean, they're twice as repetitive as Z100....(and that's bad)! Lol.

They're spinning the same RE-currents as often as actual currents.....and spinning the actual currents at an astronomical rate!

Looking at other CC CHR's around the country....not one of them has a playlist as tight as Power! Again, are they just waiting on WiLD to do something or what?? I just want, SO BADLY for Power to do well as a strong, pure CHR for Atlanta. But, now...I dunno. I'm well past the point of frustration, here. This has GOT to change and soon. ???

thoughts?

Star, Q100, and B98.5 also have tight playlists (slow on a lot of new music, same recurrents over and over for years) - Dave didn't, and it failed

You're missing the point. Power 96.1 and Q100 are both excluding a few hits. But at least both stations together along with WiLD equal one full top 40 station and a half.

But that's a lot of dial flipping just to catch all the hits, and half of the time WiLD will be playing non mainstream top 40 hip hop hits.

It's ok to have a tight playlist, but at least let it be a tight playlist of the top hits. Not so tight that some songs simply just don't get played. But I am sure Power 96.1 will "fix itself" over time, as it's still relatively new.

Just "new." Many stations that are brand new tend to not play a complete hits list, but instead what seems to be a picking of select songs from the charts. But I do wonder how Karmin and Cher Lloyd could be missed.... or are those artists no longer charting and I just don't know it?

And does anybody in Atlanta play "Pound The Alarm" by Nicki Minaj - other than WiLD? I know none of the urbans will touch it because it's too electronic.......... I miss the urban format music diversity from the 80's and 90's. These days it seems like urbans are limited to one particular style of sound.

No, that's the point exactly - both Power and Q100 are operating under the assumption that a tighter playlist means higher ratings and less people changing the station

If either station wanted to play all the hits (literally), that's what they'd be doing right now

I somehow missed this before, but this perfectly says and explains it all!

And lets not forget......

I almost included that in, but decided not to at the last minute!

But it is true. I don't know what is going on. Hopefully the playlist gets fixed and we don't have to have Power go through the same thing that happened to WiLD shortly after they flipped from rhythmic ac to pure rhythmic.

How did no one notice "airplanes" by BOB playing multiple times every two or three hours for so many days in a row on WiLD? And how did "hey baby" by Pitbull get removed from the playlist when it was at its prime on the charts? Even Q100 was playing it! And how did that MD or PD manage to keep his job for so long after the whole playlist fiasco that dropped WiLD down to a 1.9? Hopefully all this doesn't happen to Power (although it is noticeable that Cher Lloyd, Karmin, a few Nicki Minaj tracks, and other things are simply not being played on Power 96, which is odd).

They're probably deciding on a specific direction to take - "Some Nights" by Fun is about to hit #1 on the CHR chart, and CC has pulled the track completely from Power's playlist, most likely so as not to isolate ethnic listeners who've switched over from Wild - it's either follow this route, or turn around, add in rock/pop, and go after Q100 (and in that case keep Wild)

Pretty sure the tight playlist means they're still not sure what the best option is

I agree now.

But they might as well let Power go the WiLD route and let WiLD become something else since there are already enough Hot AC borderlining Top 40 sounding stations around.

The direction Power needs to go in is FULL-ON CHR. It's like, we get so close to having it here in Atlanta....but, it just falls apart! By going FULL-ON CHR, they could add in everything from Phill Phillips and Ed Sheeran to Nicki Minaj and 2 Chains. That way Power can go after Q100, STAR, and even B and occasionally some urbans.

With a TOTAL, full, complete......CHR playlist!!

That's the direction POWER needs to go in!
It's just so simple and works in DOZENS of other markets!

(sheesh)!

Sorry guys....but, damn! Lol.

Everytime someone starts to try that, though in Atlanta, they end up failing, and either going Rhythmic or pseudo-Hot AC

My guess is that there's a big demographic split in Atlanta between suburban and urban listeners, and that there isn't much common ground between the two

Oh, how quickly they turn!!! Power is programing for sampling right now and will be for some time. They want to make sure that when they steal a listener from the competition that everytime that listener tunes in (samples) they are playing a well known big hit. Sure it is repetitive to you who listen for hours on end but I'm guessing you are not even close to their target of women 18-54. That target listens on a lot of short occasions. Unfortunately, and I hate it too, but it's been proven over and over again, listeners say they want variety but the numbers prove the only variety they want is their favorites to be played over and over again...hence tight playlists.

^Plus, Q100's gonna have most of the at-work 25-34+ females (that listen for long periods of time)

Rhythmic-leaning CHRs tend to cater to the 18-25 crowd that tunes in mostly in the afternoon/evenings for short periods of time

BTW Fun is about to hit #1 CHR with Some Nights - sorry, but if Power refuses to play a #1 song, they need to think about moving to the Rhythmic panel

I thought tight playlists and excluding hits was the way to go in Atlanta, so why should they even bother to add Fun.? As a matter of fact, they would be more like a traditional Atl. CHR if they just chose to NOT add it, lol. And how much is Power 96.1 even following the rhythmic charts to be considered a rhythmic??  :)
